I was like 9 years old and at the Hagerstown Raceway (1/2 mile clay oval) with my dad one Sunday evening, when a sprint car (like in the video above but far more advanced /faster) when two collided.

One lost the inside front wheel completely and skidded into the infield and ran under the back of the water truck. The spreader bar across the back of the truck took the drivers head off, and the helmet with head in it rolled across the grass.

It took a few seconds for it to sink in. More than a few people lost their hotdogs and beer.

Full roll cages weren't long in coming after that.

Apparently, it took a while before the idea of a roll cage dawned on somebody.
