Cat in or out?
10/15/13 1:08 PM

I'm looking for any suggestions or advice.
I own an 2013 14R Australian model which came std with cats in the header & both mufflers.
I have since replaced the mufflers with Leo Vince EVO2 slip ons, and have booked in with Oz-Racing to do my 12,000km service and do the ECU flash.
Am I better to remove the cat from the headers or leave it in?
He has suggested to leave it in so it complies with the Australian emissions laws & that it won't make that much difference to the end result.
I'm not really concerned with the emissions laws, but I'm not sure whether to leave it in or take it out.

Thanks in advance

Look at your stock header at the head. Look at the step-down about and inch out from the port hole. See the taper of the pipe? Cat flows massively. So with the bigger pipes, she goes proportional and no loss of HP.

I bet if they were honest, some might say they could not feel any difference with the cat gutted. It flows that well. So one is no gain, two is you are compliant, three, it's a speed event you will slow down [if hot air moves faster is the theory] you remove it.

I'd gut it myself. I've never removed a cat from a bike that didn't show an increase on the dyno and a reduction in heat.

My bike is ex aus stock.
The cat in header isn't in the wide section. Its just after it.
My fuel economy went from 20km per litre to 23 and the grunt is very noticeably increased.
Well worth removing.

So much so I have ordered akra headers to see if they increase power even more.

It was a lazy cat. Now it sleeps on the bed and is kept out of the garage.

Humm...interesting...the USCAN models have a 'seperator' vane inside the straight part where the pipes come down and go into one...just before that.I can't see how ANY flow could be restricted passing by that vane in there. Not even sure why they would put it in there...but the two mufflers...yes...dual cats...must go for sure;)I finally went with the 'renowned' SS Arko headers to compliment the Yoshi R77's.Did I feel a boost?Maybe...but losing the factory header for the 8 something pound Akra probably is what I was feeling. The factory headers do a very good job with this new motor. It does loft easier...but it lofted so easy before with the Flash and loss of stock mufflers it was(is) very hard to discern if the piping changed much at all.I'd have to say....ditch the factory exhaust...a worthwhile addition to a firebreather already destroying everything in it's path;)

There is one thing that will definitely affect performance...altitude.I am right now a just about my limit for squeezing any more power from my engine....short of going NOS or turbo.THAT isn't in the cards.I'm happy with how she runs as is right now.
