Gearing question
04/21/23 7:56 AM

So i have a fbo 2017zx14se, stock gearing is front 17t, rear 42t, im currently running 16t,45t and one of the guys i ride with just got a newer R1M with a flash and exhaust, i take him from the start out to 130mph after that he pulls past me. With that being said what wpuld be a better gearing, while keeping the bike street/strip ready. Thanks in advance

Is the R1M stock, flashed, tuned, re-geared, stretched? Are you flashed and tuned or stretched? Is your rev limiter extended past stock 11,000 RPMs. Are you starting in 1st or 2nd gear and from what MPH...40/50/60? What's both rider's weight as you already know that the ZX14R is already at a disadvantage weight wise as it relates to the R1M? From videos I've watched, the R1M is one fast bike and I've yet to run across one in the streets.

To give you an idea I run 16/43 and sometimes stock 17/42 and I consistently beat S1000RR, 3rd Gen Hayabusas and the latest gen GSXR 1000s. Now I'm flashed/tuned/stretched 8" over with a full Brocks exhaust and Sprint P08-F1 85 filter. In my group we start out at 40 MPH and I start in 1st gear(17/42) or 2nd gear(16/43) where I hammer the throttle and get the jump by 1-2 bike lengths and continue to lead and spread the gap up to 180-190 MPH.

I'm surprised that you're getting the jump on the R1M and it passes you at 130 MPH which you should be in 4th gear at this time. The ZX14R is a top end monster and shines in the upper RPM/MPH range. You may want to gear down a tooth or 2 in the rear and see if that helps. I tell you this, when I was at SWB and was running 16/43 a BMW S1000RR did exactly what you described in your scenario. On another day I swapped back to 17/42 at SWB and I ended up winning against the S1000RR.

The bike is FBO, mail in flashed, with a pcv piggy back where i had it dynoed and the fuel adjusted, lowered stretched, sprit f1 filter, brocks full predator exhaust l, cormoto apex 6 wheels then the 16,45 gearing as well as a few other things. Bike is fully derestricted fan temp and revlimiter adjusted, at the dyno she pumping out 201.5hp, 107lbs tq, and topped outbat 172mph not nothing crazy but for a stock engine ill take it.

Unfortunately up top the heft of these hyper sports are definitely a disadvantage compared to the pure super sports, where as in the 1/4 the weight help allows putting all the power down.

Add to that most 14 riders, well let's just say most of the time we aren't 135 lbs and while I realize there's worlds difference weight wise between the bikes being discussed unless rider weights are very similar (and tuck style etc.). So if you're 200lbs and the R1 rider is 150, that's more of a difference than any tuning you've done to the bike.

I would also consider stretched as a negative as far as top end, as the rear tire is most likely a 2nd frontal area compared to slippery stock wheel base and body work (with under belly).

Just my thoughts.

I've got a 2012 ZX-14R. I've done a lot of roll on racing, 2nd gear at 40 mph and hit it. 16/45 isn't the right gearing for this. That's more for the 1/4 mile. I had 17/45 for a while and I raced my nephews 2006 ZX-14. I beat him pretty easy, but not as bad as I wanted to. Switched back to the stock 42t sprocket. Not even close. Not even a race. That's what I wanted. I'm sticking with the Vortex aluminum 42t sprocket from now on. It's the best combination for roll on racing. The top end rush with the 42t is unreal. It just keeps pulling and pulling. I've also beat a BMW S1000RR and the new 3rd generation Hayabusa. The guy that had the BMW and new Busa (owned by the same person) said I walked away from both of them, especially the Busa.

I think if you go back to the stock 42t you'll have a totally different result. You should pull him right away because of the torque advantage of the 14 and I bet you'll keep on pulling him.
Give it a shot. I bet you'll be the winner.
