Front sprocket insanity...
07/11/09 12:26 PM

Well, I took my bike into my mechanic to get my 16T sprocket put on. He already owed me the labour but I hung out there all day and stripped down a '97 F650 for him anyway - sheesh those are some bastard carbs to pull.

Time came to put my bike up on the stand, strapped it down front and back, and I warned him that several people have had severe troubles getting the nut off. Well, after an hour of throwing everything we had at it we had simply smeared the nut round and never budged it one bit. This included a 3/4" impact as well as breaker bars with eight foot pipes and a lot of heat. The thing never moved one micron.

Laugh all you want, but beware. Mine will now need to be cut off and that won't be pretty. It's a 2008 and I don't know what the hell they did to put that on there (I didn't really smell the classic red loctite smell when we heated the nut up) but it is way beyond ridiculous to say the very least.

Now I need to order another nut, and we will have to dremel zipcut what we can and chisel the rest of the nut off when we get the chance. WTF?!

I think the hot socket is a black whatever size millimeter it is. This socket has the edged dropped in a way that you do not lock onto the narrower ^ point, but more where that ^ you see drop off of the ^.

That way, you don't ride and tear over that shallow part of the teeth of the socket to the tip of the nut. I let the rear wheel freewheel and let the shock go all the way around the chain instead of tearing those tow rollers getting all the action.

Eventually, the hammering is going to distort the nut. It is more being patient on the air gun. I see no other way of removing that nut come time I play with it OR NOT! I would not hammer on the chisel to the shaft.
You are going to have to use a cutting wheel.

I mean, the strike is fine, but that is to hammer a 90° smack to split the buzz saw you made by not nicking the output shaft. You nick that... She is in sheer factor and will tear the HP right off the torque read between the lines.

hub, trust me I know how to get a stubborn nut off - I work as a millwright in a decrepit sawmill and it is pretty much my life. This friggin' thing was not going to move with conventional means. And yeah, the chisel would only be fine cutting through the last bit you can't do with a zipcut on a 90 degree dremel.

Ya-I used the BLACK socket as well-but I used a 1 and 3/8ths" size-not a 35mm(if that makes a diiference). No heat, nothin,Just put that electric Kobalt on there(rated at 350,450)and after slipping a couple of times, finally got a straight grip on er-kept the impact ON-no shutting off.It wasn't moving(that I could see)and then she just let go.But I didn't stop the power while it was on the nut.Took several tries to get er to lock on there, and several seconds(maybe 10,15)to bust it loose.Thought the edges were gonna be toast as well, but it came loose.

I used a 1/2" impact and a 27mm impact socket and the nut was loose in less than 5 seconds.
