Perfect timing. I need to replace the rear, I might as well go Pirelli all around.

good deal. I got in on the program like this when they introduced the diablo (05/06?) liked them a lot on my R1.

Not in the market for tires yet, but I may as well bite. Ill use em eventually.

quick question, I see there is an "A spec" tire choice as well. whats that about? costs more.

I prefer 190/55. Try it if you have not. certainly wont hurt. corrects the stock speedo, too.

What is the benefit of the 55 over the 50?

130-50-17 = I am wide by 130. I am tall by 50.
130-55-17 = I remain wide by 130. I have more ground clearance by .5 by being a little taller.

50 = I am say a stock OEM number that came with the bike. I am horizontally plain.
55 = I am sticking up in the back a little more, no longer in a level plain. I now pitch the front end shorter is the steeper angle think at the rear so you can see how subtle the front will be changed some.

Not only that...I am 55...I wear like a son of a bitch at anything remotely resembling a straightaway.I do not stay 55 very long...not if I have a throttle junky at the controls!I have to stay at or below the speed limit...otherwise...I square off nicely, becoming a real pain in the rear to turn in.But I'm loads of fun for 100 miles! So bust my balls right away...since you're paying extra for my short lived profile....;)I might really have something going for myself...IF...I was on a lesser machine.Fortnately for me,I have plenty of "hype" going in regards to handling.People believe a lie if one tells it long enough;)

Oh,and BTW...it's a joke...55's are very cool.I wouldn't run anything else;)Under the right riding conditions...they last very well.I ran some Dunlops on my baby...supposed to be very tough in the center. What was cool about em...you could blast like a SOB on straights and wear the center down(since it lasted longer than the sides)..so it made for some really nice cornering times. You could watch it wear over time, and ride wear into the profile pretty well. When it started to get a tad 'flat' in the center, you just upped your corner speeds some...kinda cool actually. They only lasted about 2500 miles though...on mine anyway.

To add to what Hub has written, the width is measured in millimeters (mm). The height, or sidewall dimension is a percentage of this width and known as the aspect ratio. A 190/50- tire has a sidewall that is 50% as tall as it is wide. A 190/55 has a sidewall that is 55% as tall as it is wide.

So, a 190/50-17 has a sidewall that 95mm tall (3.7").
A 190/55-17 has a sidewall that is 104.5mm tall (4.1").

The original 190/50-17 tire will cover approximately 76.91 inches of distance with every rotation.
By going to a 190/55-17 tire you will cover approximately 79.26 inches of distance with every rotation.

It is for this reason that people notice a speedometer correction with the higher aspect ratio.

The rear tire will appear tall also because it is by 9.5mm (approx. .37") This is not a big deal and it's my understanding that it might improve vehicle stability ever so slightly.

55s differ from one brand/model to the next but generally, they are about 10mm higher than a 50. Larger diameter corrects the speedo. After the tire is half worn out, the speedo error starts to become noticeable again.

I noticed the bike fall into a lean a lot more readily on a 55 than the stock 50. I have not purchased a 50 in years so it is hard for me to say how well I like those compared to a 55.

Most times I look at a brand new 55 and it looks more oval from side to side after mounted to my rim. A 50 will be more like a circle side to side. IMHO, a 55 looks better a lot longer than a 50.

The increased height in the back with the 55 is supposed to sharpen the steering.

Flatter side tread (from oval shape) creates a larger contact patch for increased traction. Side is where you need contact most for cornering.

The 55 prolly DOES wear on the center more for touring purposes or hard excelleration in a straight line. There is less rubber touching when the bike is sgtraight up and down so it stands to reason the center would wear away faster if that is the riding you do most of the time. However, I do not find that objectionable in the least. Provided I do some cornering, when a 55 gets a couple thousand miles on it, it is closer to a perfect circle. Still works good for turn in. It's like the tire has two lives. I would not call my 55 "squared off" until it gets past the point most riders would ride on it. This is on a tire that still has chicken strips after it is ready to be changed. Looks not so bad for roundness but the center tread is down to the wear bars.

55s are more expensive than 50s.

I really liked Bridgestone BT-016 190-55 for handling and grip. Bridgestone BT-003 190-55 was also very similar and to me seemed like a good track/street tire. Micheline Power Ones 190-55 are very popular and more expensive than Bridgestone but IMO I did not notice the turn in advantage like I did with the Bridgestones. Perhaps I have just gotten used to it and I need to ride a 50 again to tell the diff. The Micheline also did not seem to have the grip that the Bridgestone had. Did not give me much confidence at the track although I must admit it was a cold day.

Try a 55. Worst case scenario, you spend $30 more to try it out.

Southwest Pa population is an aging one and as such the traffic moves SLOW. 90% of my tire wear is grinding the center on 2nd gear half throttle passes. I still haven't found a rear tire that resists the extreme wear the 14R brings to shitty Pa roads.

Maybe I need a Shinko drag tire?

So far..Revzilla's got it goin on.That's with free shipping, right?

Tell ya what though...that 55 makes reinstalling the rear wheel SO MUCH easier...I don't need that phone book under there to hold the hub up;)Last one slipped together so nicely...I thought I did somethin wrong...whole install took about 10 minutes....from axle insertion to cotter pin placement.Maybe even less.

So how does this deal work?

i buy a 190/55 from say.....Revzilla.

I send proof of purchase to Pirelli with $25 shipping and Pirelli sends a 120/70???

...or do I submit a "coupon" for the free 120/70 to Revzilla?

...also, should I bother with A spec, reinforced carcass? costs more. Is there such thing as an A spec front?
