Sprocket kits ??
03/01/15 7:04 PM

Hey guys,

Was wondering if I could get some help. Been looking into dropping/adding teeth in my sprocket set to add some acceleration down low to my 2008 14. I was wondering what size sprockets I'll need to achieve this. I've seen 16 and 46? And others so I'm not sure. Also to achieve this will I need a bigger or smaller chain? If anybody has any exact links to where they sell this stuff as a kit where I can just click on it and add it to shopping cart that would be great lol. I had changed sizes of sprockets on my R1 and it was a noticeable difference so I would really like to feel those effects on my 14. Especially since I still have flies in... And well you know. Any help as to exactly what I need to other and any recommended brands is greatly appreciated... Thanks!!

Have a look at this.

I have 17/45 on my 08. It's a noticeable difference from stock but not like you have to be scared. It's like running about 500 rpm faster at normal highway riding speeds. 16/46 is going to be an eye opener, I think.

If you get a new chain, just make sure it has enough extra links that you can cut some off rather than come up short. 16/46 would probably fit with the stock number of links but I can't say for sure.

Taking flies out of an 08 won't do much for low end power. If you want more, go with gearing.

Thank you Rook. Ya it's a little confusing. Haven't bothered with flies yet but I'm thinking I'm gonna get a reflash done and just have them open way early so I don't have to take them out. Anybody's have any objections with his method?

OPen all the time is Same as out. No hassle to reinstall them if you want to put the bike back to stock. You wont get the .80 ounce weight loss benefit of removing them.

Nope...do it!Save yerself some hassle. They actually help in smoothing the throttle inputs and fueling/air while riding.=smoother ride.

That's not the first time I've heard that but To me, no dif in or out. A proper tune seems to be what makes the difference. Mine ran smoothest flies out and AutoTune adjustment to my map. I had the flies in, then took them out and it was the same both ways with the map I had. Main objection was the sudden hit of power at 3200 rpm. That's all but gone now with my flies out and AutoTune. I suspect it would have been the same with flies in and the autotune adjustment.

If you were not aware, TurboViking, the 06-07 14s were the bikes that REALLY needed to have flies removed. 08-11 flies were set up pretty well. I say take em out if you ever get in there and feel like it doing it. Try it flies in with a tune first.

I don't think there is a whole lot of power to be gained below 3000 rpm with flies out. The motor got some torque going there but it's not going to make much more hp until it gets spinning a little faster. Your gearing might give you that if that's what your looking for. 17/45 is not a world different than stock below 3000 rpm. A little...noticeable, but not like it's wheelie happy. I still would not yank the throttle open below 3000 rpm or the motor is going to lug somewhat. 16/46 might almost make it into a stunt bike. Be careful.

It's a great start. The gains to be felt in the Gen1 can be very rewarding. Eye opener,

Okay thanks for all the input guys. So after doing a little more research and listening to what you all have to say i think the most economical way to get what I'm looking out of it would be to drop a tooth in the front down to 16t and just leave rear sprocket stock as is. Lots of good reviews on this overall setup as it adds the accel but doesnt destroy your fuel mileage and top speed capability (not that i ever hit that really lol). Ive looked on driven and renthals websites but I dont seem to find a "16t" sprocket that will fit my bike. It all says "this product does not fit your selection". Does anybody have a link or a site that I can order the front sprocket that will fit my bike with no probs?

If I was going to just change one sprocket, it would definitely be the rear. The front is a lot harder to change. It's always a lot better to change both and a new chain. The old parts will wear the new one(s). ...but if you're experimenting, go for it. WHen you find what you like, then change all three parts at once.

A 16T front will wear a little fasterthan a 17T. A 44T will wear a little better than a 41. Of course, if you go with aluminum, that will wear faster than steel. LOL it ends up being a compromise in how you spend your money and time. Spend a little more now, save time in changing worn parts later/spend less, more maintenance later....

I have a 16 43 combo waiting to go on the bikeā€¦ I thing it will not create any studded in the 14r
I hear 41 rear on a stretched platform is fun.
The link Rooker posted is a good one.
Go get em.
