Why do Shields have the lock on them ?
07/13/09 10:02 AM

A friend and I was looking at the locks on the side of our helmets and I think the lock is to keep the shield in place when you are running at high speeds either closed or part opened depending on the helmet.
He said it was just for shipping purposes ? Not .

Just wondering what you all thought and if you have a link so I can show him it would be nice .

And this IDIOT just finished college and knows everything about everything . Like the ZX is fast but not a sport bike. He is wannabe euro squid mush just a matter of time . He tries to tell people that he was a instructor and would be willing to help them learn to ride as they dont need to pay for a class (girls anyway). Which would be fine but I have seen this idiot ride and he doesnt even stagger and likes to ride next to people . If you know someones riding that might work for you but I tend to pass

While I tend to agree what I really need is a link to a dealer or maker of helmets that says this as trust this dweeb knows more than any of us ...

I will bring this up next time he is talking to a girl telling how much he doesnt really know

Just tell him to ride with his face shield unlocked and he'll find out what it's for. I would think if it's for shipping purposes, it would have to be for riding purposes too. I can't close mine without locking it but it never occurred to me that I should even try.

He had a Aprilla furtura and then went to a VFR . he bad mouthed pretty much all Jap bikes as only europe bikes are fast . Hasnt said to much about my ZX14 though he did tell me the ST1300 was a old mans bike . he went on a trip to deals gap and only made it into ARK. before he gave up and came home . He ride about one weekend a month and thinks he is ready for racing and knows all. Most likely lucky he didnt make it to Deals as he may have been another wqreck in that kind of control riding . He just bugs me now and then with his unknowning bullshit . I have been riding 29 years and still thinkk I am a beginner on the ZX14 as its a new style of bike/rocket.

if you guys don't know why there's locks ..you haven't gone fast enough .. its to keep backdraft from ripping the face shield off when tuck or you look back at high speeds ...testing is simple ..go xxxmph and turn you head and look behind you and see what happens

i know none of ya'll race

My HJC has a little black button on the left side to lock the shield down.
My other helmet that is to old to be wearing but is good for those long rides has a slide on the left side for locking the shield down. they all have the ratcheting system to keep part way open

I think Icon makes 'racing grade' helmets. They are the ones with panels on the sides of the visor that match the color/graphics of the helmet. They have a lock on the lower edge of the visor to keep it shut if I remember correctly. I know i saw something like that last summer when I ordered my Icon.

My SHOEI has one...

http://www.shoei-helmets.com/Helmet.aspx?RF-1000&h=3&t=1

There is no specific note of 'WHY' the lock is there.. but there is at least a small mention of it in the Tech Specs section on the right side of the page:

"Preset Shield Opening Lever With Locking Mechanism"

Ah, yes... but it is also a Patent ... could prove to be at least a bit more credible
