What are peoples favorite Balaclavas or Ski Masks for winter Riding
04/21/11 12:36 AM

I am in need of a good Balaclava/Ski Mask for riding. It is still in the 30s-40s in Spokane. I was curious what people like? I have seen the Alpinestar model that looks pretty nice. They have 2 different ones, one that is a bit longer. I just wanted to get peoples thoughts on them. I would prefer to get a really nice one that will last many years. I currently am using a cotton one from the 80s. It works, but a lot of wind gets through it.

I use this one when it's really cold:
Bikers Comfort in Action

That's for anything below 45 degrees. If it gets below 25-30, I don't ride because I don't have proper gear for that yet.

Thanks for the suggestion.
That does look really nice!
I ride around 40 often. I hope this helps.
I will grab it when i have more things to buy at cycle gear or i just will drop by my local store. It is on the way home from work. Thanks!

Last year I made my own with some reflective filling so it was insulated and also fit like a handkerchief only with velcro on the back. It was real long with a neck and chest portion because my Icon jacket has no collar and fills with wind on cold mornings. It worked good but was a bit too much to stuff in my helmet.

The only thing about anything worn on the head in cold weather is if it covers the nose at all it will cause the shield to fog up or due to lack of air flow which just pisses me off! I think the best compromise without looking like too big of a dork (because the Edgecrusher has a reputation to keep) was wearing a knit cap and a big hanky over the lower half of face and ears. Balaclavas have been something I have been looking for as well but after twenty years of riding I still haven't bought one which must mean something. What I'm just not sure yet. LOL

No photoshop!
That was for real, although now that you mention it I can see how you would see it that way because of it's color. I totally rode with that thing bungee'ed on (you can see them) to my best friends' daughters' birthday party thirty miles away and hand delivered it to her. I only took a picture because I figured no one would believe that I did it. LOL

I call the picture 'badass with a bigwheel'.

I have the Alpinestars Touring Winter Balaclava which works pretty well but I'm on my 3rd season with it and seams are coming apart. I would buy it again though.
I also have Comfort In Action Road Bandit which is like a heavy bandana and on occassion I also use Schampa Shielded Dickie.
I lose things and having multiple ways to keeps cold air out comes in handy and at times I have used a combination of the three.

I use the "biker's choice" line as well. Also have two lighter weight balaclavas that cover your head...KLIMs is what they are.I wear the KLIM and the half clava(biker's choice) for REALLY cold stuff. The biker's choice half clava goes down into my sweatshirt very nicely, and it has an elastic band around the top edge that can be nicely fitted to over the nose, under,or bunched up inside the back of the helmet/collar.Works really well. Can pull it down some to only cover the chin...makes yer neck feel really good on those cold days. The KLIM will keep the air off yer ears...very important!!!!

I bought that Alpinstars one...the bigger one with the cinch deal.Cheap.That's all I can say...cheaply made.I don't use it anymore.

I might eventually get that one Loaded has.Looks pretty complete.I already know they make quality stuff.
