Whats up with the ridiculous plastic electrical locking connectors on Japanese machinery?!?

I can't believe how poorly designed the locking electrical connectors on Japanese bikes are. The way they have the ridiculous locking mechanisms set up you need 3 hands to get them apart. It really torques my screws when it takes longer getting the damn connectors apart without breaking them, than it does the job itself. They really need to make a nice simple locking set-up that is user friendly I hope you're listening kawi.....

I found some of the connectors to be quite a challenge. Not nearly as bad as removing the brake line retainers from the front fender though. Those little devils will leave you with bloody fingers.

Don't they have special tools for these things?Tryin to push in three pointy little tabs and pull out while pushing down the "lock bar"-gotta be a better way!(or is it "lift"the bar?I still aint figured out HOW I got the $f%& things apart!Somehow, they did though!LOL

I have to agree, those Japanese connectors must have been designed by a sadist! When I installed the PCIII on my 14 it took an honest 30 minutes to get the connector loose from the ECU. I had a friend depressing the locking tab with a screwdriver while I used both hands to grasp the connector shell, wiggle and PULL....HARD. You cannot pull on the wiring bundle itself which would give you a good grip, you gotta squeeze the shell with your fingers....I was almost ready to give up when suddenly it released. I could not have done it by myself...period!

Flip side of all this is that those connectors are very reliable. It is a rare occurrence indeed to hear of one failing but I still think they could be made reliable and user friendly.

Each one is a different design, some you have to lift the lock tab, others you have to push on it to release. I've actually left blood on those things! LOL! I'm taking off work tomorrow morning to install the PCIII on my CBR so this is timely. There's like 10 or 11 of those little bastards on the PCIII harness I'm going to have to deal with.

PCIII installation on the 14 is not too bad Rook, with the exception of the aforementioned ECU connector it went pretty smooth. Make sure you set up your throttle points when your done, takes less than 5 minutes. Mine were pretty much spot on so it didn't really make much difference.

Just to chime in... I had no problems with any connectors, and had to deal with quite a few between the PC-III and the LSL kit with Superbike High-bars. The key is to keep a constant pressure on the 'apart' while gently prying on the side tabs or whatever with a tiny little screwdriver. Slow and steady, you don't want to break that kind of stuff.

Ditto here, I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I did the PCIII installation on the CBR, 10 connectors total, 8 for the injectors and 2 for the Throttle position sensor. Honda has chosen a very intelligent design that was easy to release by simply squeezing the connector and pulling. Very intutitive and low force required to release.

I like the connectors. They are very efficient (strong, waterproof, lightweight.) They are like a puzzle though. The first time is always fun.

It would be interesting to know how long is allotted in a dealer's "flat rate" manual for disconnecting those buggers. Does anyone know a pro mechanic? They must have a system.Tiny screwdriver, C clamp, and "Joe lemme borrow your finger," "No not that one."
Everything is easier the second time, (assuming you remember the first time.) My guess about the flat rate would be 30 seconds. But, what the hell, its all part of the fun we have screwing with our stuff in the shop. Like I tell my wife...The reason I can afford this $200 part is because I saved that much installing the last part myself. It's totally rational!

The Japanese are famous for not selling individual connectors for their harnesses...you break a connector and you either try and fix it...or remove it and hardwire the conection. It would be so easy for them to just use a nice single locking tab that was easy to push/use/reach, just not sure why they don't do it If you use WD-40 on the connector the first time you undo it, if you ever have to take it apart again it'll be mucho easier
