700 mile day....first ride!
07/13/09 9:51 PM

I finally picked up my bike in SLC Utah....promptly put on my Area P's with about 1 mile on the clock and rode about 50 miles up the utah canyons. First impressions were everything I could have hoped for....and more. The bike is amazing and I can see where you need to respect the beast or it will bite you quick. It eats up straights incredibly fast and you have to be looking ahead more than I'm used to. The Area P's make the bike loud and raspy....for lack of a better word. A bit of drone in the city, but on the highway real nice. I opted for the loud inserts and don't regret it. Had the oil changed at 55 miles or so and went up and down the rpm's to about 6k for a while anyway. I geared up and drove south on I-15 until highway 50 and headed west on the "loneliest road in America"....quite aptly named I have to say! Long straight stretches of nothing out there...beautiful scenery....no cars and 10-20 mile straights. I couldn't resist....had to do some 2-3 max rpm runs with about 200-300 miles on the bike. I wasn't overwhelmed by the power...maybe even a bit underwhelmed after all the reading, however, I was at 6-7000' of altitude. I did some 1st through 4th full throttle blasts and the bike ran strong....no wheel spin or wheelies, just good hard pulls to about 150mph. Corners were nice and the bike feels real good in the long sweepers and the occasional tight turns. I rode hard....about 9 hours until Reno....kept it at about 90mph for cruise with occasional runs to 120 to keep the adrenaline flowing. Met my girlfriend in Reno and we rode to Tahoe for a couple of days. Overall, the 700 miles was not too painful....the first 300 was a piece of cake....the next 300 some squirming....the last 100 painful. We stayed a couple days in Tahoe and then took off for Santa Clara. Started out in a storm over Tahoe...not a fun way to start a trip getting wet! Dried off and blasted down I-80....then a magical thing occurred....I started riding a completely different bike! The lower I got, the more the bike woke up....night and day difference from 6-7k altitude and sea level. I learned quickly not to romp on the bike with a passenger on back in first gear.....instant wheelie....and a scared girlfriend on back :). The ride back from Tahoe was very painful with two people and two bags strapped on the tank. Great bike for solo riding, but dual....not so much...at least for long hauls with the stock set up. I already have over 1k on the bike and I'm planning a ride up the coast to Washington soon....should be fun!

Good for you, Birdman. I am so glad i live at sea level. Would love to do some mountain roads some day though.

The power seems to fall off quickly with altitude for sure. Here at sea level it feels like a solid wall of power but even at 1500 ft or higher it loses some crispness. I've taken that road from Tahoe after crossing Nevada and it sure feels good down into Cal after the hot desert.

Give the bike some more time,[break-in] even over 1K miles and it should loosen up and get better. I notice that my gas mileage was much better after the 1K mark.
Altitude at 6-7k will hold back allot of power, something I noticed on a recent trip though the hills of NC and WV.
Come down to sea level and what a difference it made.
Did you remap with the Area P's ?

No.....i'm a noob about sport bikes and ecu's and mapping....did all my work on my 06 GTO....now I have to learn about the 14. Is it a re-program you purchase or have done?

Most people, not all may tell you to use a programmable unit like the DynoJet Power Commander to finely tune your bike if you make changes like exhaust systems, etc.
You could possible be now on the lean side of the AFR when exhaust is changed.
I personal do not have experience yet with the Power commander since my bike is stock still, but I'm sure others will chime in and add their comments and advise.

Enjoy your new ride..............

It sounds like my GTO....when you mod the car or bike, you need to re-program the computer to maximize the mods...either by dyno tune or with a "canned" or customized tune that you can squirt into the computer...sound right?

That would be correct. Dynojet has most of the generic maps for the appropriate mod for your bike. It's also possible that the muffler makers may have a map. You also have the option of finding a tuner in your area that would custom dyno your bike in order to achieve the best tune. This maybe the hardest thing to do in finding a good tuner, so most would come by word of mouth from other bikers.

Man do I miss the Utah curves. Immagration and the others (cant think of them off the top of my head). Great to see you getting everything out of the bike. If you want some more juice go the power commander route, I have been impressed. The power gain isnt as amazing as when I put a chip on my diesel truck, but it still is a great upgrade to do without getting to exotic. Ride safe!

Yeah....immigration canyon was the first canyon I rode in....real nice road! Hwy 50 was amazing....huge straight stretches and then great twisties....and I only saw one cop after the oncoming car opened his window and told me he was 5 miles ahead :). Hard to beat the power gain when you chip your truck....I got over 100hp when I chipped my 07 f350 powerstroke...diesels are a different animal for sure. Lots of great roads all over the west...I'm going to explore em all again. Heading north on Sunday to Tacoma...then over to Colville WA...north of Spokane and then back home via the side roads...should be about 2500 miles of fun.
