Ballistic Evo
08/30/12 1:10 PM

Just picked up one of these on ebay for $160 free ship...had an 8-cell in my hypermotard that did very well, got the 12-cell for the 14R so I shouldn't have any trouble running my HIDs and power outlet. Gonna use Rook's template with the stock tray and use Home Depot-style clear acrylic instead of 1/4" plywood. Specs are as follows from the manufacturer:

Dimensions (Standard): 4.5" (L) x 3.5" (W) x 4.25" (H)
Weight: 1106 grams (2.44 lb)
Voltage (Charged): 13.6V
Amperage: 20 Pb-eq A/H
Pulse Cranking Amps: 410 CCA
Operating Environment: -18°C (0°F) to 60°C (140°F)
Typical Applications: 1000cc and over multi-cylinder motorcycles, metric cruisers, stock Sportsters, Softails, Dynas, large scooters, side by sides, jetskis and large ATV’s.

Was trying to decide between Shorai and Ballistic, Shorais were just a bit too pricey with less performance (and foreign).

Here's some pics of this battery mod...

I used the stock battery tray (fit the 12-cell Ballistic perfectly width-wise, no need for the plywood base).

I WD-40'd it and put a plastic Walmart bag down into which I sprayed the foam (from HD)

Spray painted it black and trimmed with an Exacto

Fits in tightly, easily removable...weighs almost nothing.

Yeah they aren't cheap. Got a good discount from superbikesupply.com through the zx-10 forum though. I actually went shorai because they make a battery specifically for the ZX-14. I didn't wanna mess with foam or anything like that. I wish I'd seen this earlier I would have sent you the foam with the backpack, it is neater. Krylon is just fine though but if you want/need foam let me know.

It may have been a "placebo effect" but right after the install, I threw the bike in a turn and felt the difference. All those mods make it hard to ride a stock bike.

* I did have to use a piece of foam under the battery to raise it a little and make the OEM rubber strap tight! The shorai loose a little cranking power then remain constant without any maintenance. When I put it in store mode on a tender it starts the bike REALLY fast. Is the Ballistic battery the same way, or does it maintain maximum cranking power?

Haha, yeah, I probably did it the hard way, but it came out nicely. The entire assembly is so much lighter than stock! Have a lot of extra room in there now too...guess I know where to hide stuff from the popo now ;-) I haven't cranked it up yet due to my muffler off (powdercoater screwed up my finish on the tip), but on my Ducati I could crank the 8-cell right up after a month of not riding (not on a tender either). This thing is 410 CCAs, twice what stock is so I'm not too worried. It's 2.7lbs though, not the 2.44 they claim.
