In line fuel filter
03/17/15 12:40 AM

I have a 2008 ZX14 Special addition ive noticed ive started to get lack of power on acceleration and was wondering if there is a in line fuel filter which i may need to change. The maintenance manual does not show one but im sure there will be one. Anyone any ideas of the location?

there is none. there is a fuel filter in the fuel tank. it ca be changed but it is not meant to be replaced without replacinng the fuel pump along with it. Romans has replaced a fuel filter and there is a thread on here you might find if you search it.

Thank you jxh. I'll have to have a look at that myself, sometime. No problems here yet but it has come up for a few others.

Hi

I had the same problem, started losing power at 9000 rpm then went to 8000.
Check the air filter first
You cannot replace only the fuel filter element it is sealed, the pump and filter is one unit can no buy separate.
Stupid Kawasaki you have to buy the complete thing only then my problem was sorted.

I've updated that previous thread to now include test specs, and service manual page references.

This good to know here, that a fuel pump delivery issue can appear as a gradual drop in engine power.

Please see the thread referenced above. You CAN replace just the filter but you have to order the correct PN from Kawasaki. I believe it's the Z1000 filter but again the thread above has the details. A new pump is $400 or so, a new filter is only a bit more work but is less than $20 as I recall.

Here is a photo of the filter from the other thread:

As you can see the PN is: 49019-0013

Available from all the usual Kawasaki parts suppliers including your local stealership. Looks like the going price is $10-$15 or so.

This picture (above) shows the "pre-filter" sock fitted into the gas tank, external to the fuel pump, onto the fuel pump inlet.

Its not the primary filter, but will help keep the pump filter from being prematurely clogged.

The pre-filter sock that I bought looks like this one pictured, but it does not fit my '12+ 14R fuel pump according to fische parts lookup.

Hi Mebgardner,

You are 100% correct. The main filter is part of the pump assembly.
After replacing mine with problem of power loss 9000 to limit it had very good results at high cost for the unit.
I try to clean the pre-filter if I can to keep the dirt from going in the main filter.
I cut the old one open and it was completely black, not very good design from kawasaki.

Mebgardner do you think you can backwash the filter with benzene?
My bike is flying now!!

I believe I don't want anything to do with benzene, or backflushing.

I enjoy my cancer-free lifestyle, and I'll buy a new pump to keep it.
