R&G rad guard
05/25/12 2:01 AM

~GOt an R&G rad guard for the zzr, it didnt fit properly, there is a plastic shroud attached to the bottom of the steering stem, presumably to protect bearings from water, the horn is attached to the same shroud,
in order for the rad guard to sit nicely without getting hit by the shroud i had to cut it down a bit, there was no room to push it up between the shroud and the rad comfortably, it tended to push the rubber strip from the top of the rad, and turning steering lock to lock the shroud rubbed off the guard, I did mail r/g and they asked for pics and details, they said it was unusual, so i dont know if it was the guard was wrong or if my shroud or rad were seated slightly closer than normal, anyway, got it fitted and a freebie from R&G was offered by way of apology,
I got a tail tidy from them too, fits perfectly, also got a hugger from pyramid, perfect fit too

Cox makes a descent one. I have learned not to use the foam they give you.... I did not need to but removed the plastic above the horn & removed 1/2 inch to make sure there was no rubbing issue. I had the same guard on my 07 and it held up well. Was going to pass this up on the 14R but after a close inspection it appears my radiator got a nice deep ding already.... $50 to save $900.... a Bargain!

ye, i was thinking of getting rid of the foam, i think its just a precaution on their hehalf, chaffing steel against rad would win,
and it sits away from the rad the way it is, foam looks ugly too

I had an R&G on my Ducati, good stuff. I'm planning on getting one for the 14R, just procrastinating. I have had a couple of Cox guards, but thought they were king of cheap the way they zip tie on. The R&G use the rad mounting point on one side which seems a lot more sturdy.

hey man, the R&G also uses zip tie at the top, around the rad mounting points, and its a tricky little fuker to get sorted out , especially if you got big hands!!

I'm in trouble then! Will have to recruit the wife for zip tie duty.

The best radiator guard from my experience (had a Cox on my ZX14, and now a ProjekD on my C14) is the ProjekD guard. It is a bit heavier duty in the frame and it just clips over the top lip of the radiator. No zip ties required.

Privateer, where did you buy your ProjekD? I saw one of those recently, but had no luck finding a vendor.

Thanks Privateer for the info. I went with SS and the fender extension. Just looked at my very dirty 08 ZX-14 after 50K miles w/o any protection. My 2012 has 8491 on it and I do not want that to happen to the new bike. Both the guard and the fender extender will afford much protection for the radiator.
