WEIRD
03/05/11 3:13 AM

Okay...all you computer wizards.

Number one.HOW DOES A BROWSER(IE9)INSTALL ON MY COMPUTER WITHOUT SHOWING UP IN THE PROGRAMS WINDOW(installed programs)?

Number two.I installed it several days ago. Then removed it.Tried to reinstall...many times. It would not install.SUDDENLY...TONIGHT....THIS IE9 JUST OUT OF NOWHERE RETURNS.no INSTALL,nothing. It shows up in my task mgr, yes. But on my "installed programs" list...it's NOWHERE to be found. And I have NO FILES in my download folder.WTH????I couldn't for the life of me get the "correct updates" that it was calling for off of the update website so it wasn't gonna go in my PC.Tried several install attempts with the IE9 file from the 2 locations.Wouldn't work. Now it shows up fully functional...and clearly working.(with the previous bookmarks in the bookmarks bar...this website...a couple of others that I had put on there.I'm runnin win7.I've never ever heard of anything like this happening. My computer has NO FILE for this program(that I can find).Yet somehow,it's reinstalled itself without any help from me.I did go to the windows update website. When I clicked on a shortcut there for some sort of info,my browser(chrome)suddenly shut down(switched I should say) and the whole screen was in Internet Explorer 9 browser.I'm a tad leery of using it ....is it possible this could be a fake program of some sort grabbing my information? It's just freaky.I downloaded the original file from the Microsoft website...using Google Chrome. The first try at installing the IE9 worked. It actually did load and work...but it wasn't saving my usernames, like for this site or my others. So I uninstalled it and recycled(deleted)the IE9 files and program. It's here on here now though...saving usernames and all...working fine(though right now I'm using Chrome).

ANYONE ever heard of ANYTHING as weird as this?HELP....it's just plain strange.

All you did was have 9; find all it's files and no, if it saves your bookmarks, it's no virus if you tried to download 9 at one time. Remember, this is Gate's monopoly and his software intrudes whether you like it or not.

You can cut and paste the bookmarks. Send that list to your own mailbox. Then wipe the drive clean. You'll have to save all what you have on your computer. I have zip to save so I can wipe the drive pretty much each year and it runs faster without all those missing files it has to hunt through.

Thanks Hub for your insight with this.I wrote Microsoft as well...no reply yet.I have an update with this...I looked in my "program files"....from some "folder" in there...and the list of files were definitely the IE9 files. The whole shebang. But still....HOW could it just reinstall without me doing anything...except looking for updates on the Microsoft Update website? It reinstalled while I was using Google Chrome....that browser just disappeared and was "replaced" by the now fully functional IE9.In the MIDDLE of my session on the website. There was no info messages from the program, you know,like..."you must restart your computer"...you know, stuff that ALWAYS prompts ya when yer doing an install of something with a large amount of files. It just replaced the Chrome browser in like a split second. No interruption of anything...didn't even lose connectivity with the website. One second,it was the Chrome header,next...there was a tiny "blip" of the screen, and it was the IE9 header...and the program.(but NOT in my "installed programs" list in the add/remove programs window).Chrome is in there.IE9 is not.

This is WAY more intriguing than my "cam position sensor" deal EVER was .

You're welcome, blue. Well, again, no one taught me how to wipe win98 when we had some mail virus going around. Short of replacing the hard drive, Gates had it all on line. I wrote the code on the side of the tower. There was a certain pattern the code would have to be entered or you did nothing but type letters and numbers once you hit enter.

It's not easy to walk you through win98. However, it's a lot easier with xp being built in to the systems now. You know how to move to another day so as to wipe today's entries out... Like IE9?

Blue; It's not under programs, it's under "installed updates".

Looked there also.Guess what....."there are no updates installed on this computer"....get that!I installed SEVERAL updates in there. They were "successful".I have the list of updates clearly showing in that very page you're speaking of.Koo Koo I tell ya.And the ones it shows...yes...even the IE9 "update" shows....."failed".So it didn't go in(except that one time...and it doesn't even show that one time in there as "successful"...they all show "failed"(The IE9 update that is).Yet she's in there now....running merrily away when I choose to use it as my browser."Things that make ya go HMMMMMM"... The only place it shows it's running,is when I use it,and open task manager...there she be...in all her glory.Other than that...it's not in my system(except the folder for it...you know...the file listings for it).But it's not "installed" according to my "installed programs" list.Every other working program is in there.Showing the size of the file(s)and the date it was installed.(start the twilight zone music here).

And another strange but true thing. On my XP platform, all the Updates would appear on the "installed programs" list. All of em.Bunches.Yet on the "installed updates" page that we're referring to...as I said...NONE.Then when I look at that other portion of "updates",same "window",they're all in there. With a list of which ones failed and which ones were okay.I tried like 7 or 8 times to install the IE9 browser. It stopped installing each time at the same place, and the troubleshooter told me to go online and get the "required" updates.Okay...so I did,and also used the "windows update" service as well.Ya...it downloaded like 2 security updates(each of the 7 or 8 times)...which I installed. So now apparently I've got like 7 of the same updates and 7 of the other updates(the security ones)"installed successfully" somewhere on my computer. It says..on that same page ....an option..."to remove updates, click here)...yet when I do...there's NO option to get em out of my computer, like in XP,where you could remove them just like removing a program.Nutso I tell ya.So apparently,I've got duplicates of these "updates" just sitting in there installed. When I opened my "find duplicate files" on another program I have...there were NO listings of those files in there.I aint usin IE9 till Microsoft gets back to me with an answer for this.If it IS a hack....it's a damn good one.Right now...I don't trust it's a genuine IE9 program.

I can't "uninstall" it...the computer doesn't think it's in there!WoHoooo...wheee!Kooky I tell ya.

blue; what OS are you using? You mentioned XP, but it didn't sound like that's what your current pc is. IE9 is not compatible with XP, only vista or 7. Just to let you know, when Chrome was in bets, I decided to give it a try with XP, and it locked up IE7 and Chrome. Neither would access the internet. Had to do a restore point, and reload IE7. Betas are always buggy, and risky.

the new chrome 9 is supposed to be really fast too. I usually wait till the next version is out before I jump just to make sure the bugs are out. So when IE9 is final, I'll bump to 8.
