Extra Cooling Fan
02/17/09 11:40 AM

Hello my dear ZX-14 People ! I have a question in regards of an extra cooling fan. I purchase an original ZX-14 cooling fan in Ebay for $25.00, I tested and it works so I did good risking buying something like this from there, lol. I want to installed on the right side of the radiator I have the space to play with, but my question is about, Do I need a relay for it ? I want to have a separate switch for it. I want the fan to go on when I need it, like on slow traffic or city runs or any other situation where I need some extra cooling. Any ideas or suggestions I will really appreciate them.

Ninjaboy07:

There was a 3-page thread on the old forum titled "ZX14 Fan Replacement" that also talked about adding a 2nd fan. In that thread, 1mile14 talked about adding a HOW-TO about adding the 2nd fan after he had accomplished it, but I don't find that HOW-TO anywhere in the Google cache.

Here are links to the 3-page thread. You may find something helpful in there.

I don't know how long these pages will stay in the Google cache -- maybe not too long. Hope this helps. -bg

ditto

It's still summer here and getting to 90degF each day, the bike regularly gets up to 230+degF. most bikes i've had are at 180degF. so cooling is a priority for me right now

I did this mod last weekend. It went pretty well! I drilled out the factory welds that held the braces on the fan and moved them (welded) to convert to a right side fan install. Hand made a few mounts and epoxied them to the radiator. Mounted the whole setup. I used a relay from the parts store for $6 bucks. the trigger wire is from the stock fan power wire. it turns on and off from the stock fan which i decided is best so the operating temp stays the same (220-240). I also found the stock fairing foams and siliconed them in place and added a few new ones to keep the heat off my legs. I also plan on the ZX 10 fender mod next for more air flow and better looks. good luck if you try these!

I'm camera retarded, so sorry- but i got the idea from another site with a pdf file to send ya if you leave an email. An after shot wouldn't show much but fan blade edges even with the fairings off. (I'm no help am I?)

Hi Ninjaboy07,

I bought my ZX14 2008 a month ago, great bike, so far 1300 miles of fun, however I am experiencing the overheating problem riding at low speed along with the heat peak after turning off the engine.
I saw your post about installing the second cooling fan, I checked the three links to see how the job should be done but they are not available anymore.
I was wondering if you could post how to do the job.

Thanks,
Marco

Hi there,

I found this extra cooling fan for ZX14:

I don't know if anyone has ever heard about it.

Cooling Fan or wrapping pipes?
06/25/09 8:56 AM

Regarding the heating problem, I agree that installing a second fan definitely decreases the heat along with water wetter, but what about wrapping the exhaust pipes at least down to where they connect at the bottom in the front while the body panels and rad are out?

Would there be any technical reason not to wrap them?

Thats the exact kit I just purchased......I'll try and get some pics of it installed before I bolt the bike back together That kit just wires into the stock fans power supply, so it goes on and off with the stocker. It comes with a 20 amp fuse to replace the stock 15 amp. It also comes with 4 plastic mounts, zip ties, and rubber pads to mount to the radiator. It looks like a pretty simple install overall.....we'll see

I had my pipes wrapped at the first service, along with a better coolant. bike is now cooler and quieter. no need for a 2nd fan.

not sure which had the most effect but it works :)

I changed my coolant to "Engine Ice" brand. Although it appears to run cooler by the temperature guage it doesn't feel significantly cooler on my right leg. I only seem to have the problem on the right side.
What product was used to wrap the pipes? Were they wrapped individually or as a group?
It's definitely hotter (more uncomfortable) now that summer is here.

Russty, roughly how much did that cost, and did you provide the wrap or what ? I've been planning on doing that, and swapping my fan blade out for the Muzzy aluminum fan blade, and Engine Ice.

I went for a ride the other day, in the afternoon. It was a hot day, (90's.) The bike started running really hot. It maxed out on the gauge. It was burning my legs. I checked and the coolant was full. Ever since I had switched to "Engine Ice" brand coolant it has been running a little cooler, (according to the bar gauge.) But this was painful! I turned around to head for home and 10 miles later the gauge dropped back to the 3rd bar, (normal.)
I was wearing Khaki pants and hiking style boots. I ended up with burns (like sunburn) across my shins above the boot/sock top.
I had already ordered heat wrap yesterday because it had been getting uncomfortable. But this made the bike unrideable!!
Anyone else had problems with overheating?

Regarding the wrap, do a search at Ebay, on "exhaust wrap" You'll see several different styles, even some with the stainless steel tie-wraps. You can get the Water Wetter or the Ice on ebay as well.

Interesting, I found Engine Ice and a wide range of wraps at Amazon.com

I can get free shipping on a lot of stuff there, and no tax of course, like eBay. Just have to check pricing, sometimes they are low, sometimes they are way high.

Seems like the wraps come in one of two forms. Either just the wrap, and you have to buy the ties seperately, or as a kit, with the ties included. All the kits I've seen had stainless steel ties. Some even had silicon spray, which I think is a must to keep the wrap from getting saturated with water (a bad thing).

I saw a local independant shop (love those guys!) do one, and when they first started it, it smoked like it was on fire. The smoke stopped after a few minutes. Is normal.

I've come to the final conclusion I'm going with a Muzzy titanium full exhaust, since it has the O2 bung already on it, and I've liked their exhausts on Z1s, ZX11s a lot. Wrapped all the way back to the can in black wrap. Muzzy fan blade. PC5 w/ autotuning, Muzzy base map. Simple, effective.

Sharky, I have the added fan(from a ZX6) and also ceramic coated the header. Temp gauge nevers goes above 3 bars past "C". The fans kick on at 3 bars and then cycle back off. I used heavy gauge wire and wired the fans in parallel. Added a slow blow fuse to take the extra start up load. All is good and not so toasty anymore. I use Peak coolant with water wetter.
