Reed Valve
09/20/11 2:44 AM

I just got done installing block off plates and was wondering ...
I did pull out the reed valves is that okay or do I need to leave them in?

Good move. Keeping them in will eventually burn the reed or carbon over them; if you are lucky.

yup. Muzzy BOplates instructions say to remove the thin springy reed valve.

Mine had a very thick film of carbon but I don't think they were burned. I had the PAIR disabled but still on the motor for several K miles. I imagine that is pretty much the same as leaving the reed valves IN as far as ehaust heat on the reed valves is concerned.

Hey guy's I plugged the hose coming from the air box but never put on block off plates or removed the reed valve is this something I should do? I'm going to check my valves this winter so it might be a good idea to do it all at once?

Ever see a reed used on clarinet? Same principal but only blown in the opposite direction.

When the exhaust valve opens, this sends hot gases out into the exhaust pipe. Just like blowing lightly on that clarinet, you'll vibrate that reed off its tension point. What little air vacuum that is plugged off, this will draw the reed down, carbon up, not have it cooled off via the fresh cool air.

Also, this is a service operation where you need to clean these off of carbon. And with a can of coke next to the vinegar dip? How do we remove carbon and not harm a reed or cause the rubber to swell useless? Yep... Amazing shit is that saladip.

"Maintenance and Adjustments" pg. 127 (+/-) a page or 2.

"The air suction valve is a one way, can't push back up if not carbon'dup!' Well yeah, you can leave them in. The trick is to close them off from the post ram. The stalling is that if that was able to backwash, the faster event says, on 'crossoverlap', call it, here comes more air on the close; sorry gas you were too slow. Why? Because we entered though the backdoor, filled that void first on the close. Make sense? Gas didn't shut down. It just sprayed back what was shot in was shot out = Stalling, hard starting, lean if running.

I would think you would hear a whooshutting-tapping kind of knock?

Makes sense.

No funny sounds, that I can hear... but you'll see/hear my bike, in person, soon enough... Not gonna yank 'em until bike gets winter teardown.

Hmmm... Got my Muzzys block off plate today and went to install it.
Seems your saying I would be better pulling out the reeds, but contrary to what Rook is saying, the instructions from Muzzys I have in front of me is saying to leave them in?
I don't mind pulling them out (I understand it's probably best as well), but would I need to fabricate some gasket if I do?
If so, is high temp silicone good enough?

Thanks!

Since you're blocking off the passages, there's no use in pulling the reeds. Without a place to go, the exhaust pulse that would normally push them shut can't act in that direction, so even though they will stand open, there's no place for the charge to back up.

Thanks for the reply Danno,
Well waiting for a reply I decided to go ahead and pull them.
I figured it's got to be worth a couple of oz's to take them out.
I had to make a gasket for them though,I made it out of thick heat resistant gasket, should be good..

Pulling them won;'t hurt, either. Without the associated plumbing, they are just drone parts. And I think I had it backwards; they probably remain closed unless air is free to be sucked through them by the negative exhaust pressure wave.

Do you need to make a gasket? The Muzzy plates are very nice and milled flat as can be so I was thinking some black rtv and I'd be fine? Whatcha think?

Still have not pulled mine out, but RVT was what I was thinking... Thinking some instructions say to leave them in just 'cuz the gasket is attached to them.

I decided to pull the reed valves out, if not for the few oz's it saved at least for the peace of mind of knowing something not going to go wrong with something that's not there.
As for the gasket -vs- RVT, I went with the gasket material and made a thick one out of heat resistant stuff.
No leaks, all's good!

*Somefun... quick question and totally UN-motorcycle related...
Did you not have a Seadoo speedster S-200 at one point?

Yeap,
You UN-knowingly made me do a bunch of mods...
Supercharger X, 42lbs injectors, 15/20 solas..
Didn't get to your 73 something MPH, but got a respectable 67.1 out of her.
Didn't want to put to much $ for the 5-6 mph left to go.
But got to agree with you on the hull, it porpoises way to much, wish there was a trim on them boats!

Still have her... keep changing the back gates and supports though, doing submarines moves and what not.
Hard to stop doing it but at about 750$ per break, I'll learn...(eventually) lol

Funny seeing you here with the same bike I now own, and a monster edition to boot!
Although I'll be turning her into an '09 SE orange by the summer.

Good luck on that 200mph run!

Speed that’s too funny for sure...Yeah they are a blast to drive I definitely found the hull speed limit for my hull. I could spin the props at will and she would rip right up to 70 then slowly tick off the next few. My all-time top speed was 74.1. I then took off the engine hatch all seat cushions and anything that was not tied down for one more speed run. I must have taken off 400 pounds of crap and took her for a blast and but she was no faster. Then the hopping got even worse. I don't think they ever really figured out that hull....I was working on a trim system out of a RPX I think it was but it was way different and never got anywhere with it. I wound up selling it on E bay and shipped it to Laftiea! It's good to hear from you! Cheer's partner!!!

That's right, 74 something,my bad, hey that 1 mph is IMPORTANT (and expensive)!
Yes, read all about it on Greenhulk I believe, even saved it in my bookmarks for reference.

When I saw your username on here, read your mods list at the bottom of your profile page, only I was thinking was:
Ha man, here we go again $$$$... lol
