Metzeler rear tire wear pattern
01/16/15 11:17 AM

I have 7074 miles on my OEM tire. I noticed a spot about 10" long in the center with the rubber compound is flaking.
I have never spun the tire. I ride solo.
Can I continual to use this tire?
I was hoping to get another 2000 miles.
No cords are showing.

Buy a new tire. Why chance it? That tire is a "puncture magnet" now. It is down to the wear bar. NEVER be cheap or take chances with a motorcycle tire. Is $150-$200 worth your life?

I'd change it. 7000 is a lot more miles than most people say they get. Ask to look at the old tire after it is changed so you can feel how thin a tire carcass is. that will make you think about stretching the life of a tire by running it past the wear bars. I doubt it will blow but the traction is compromised. I wouldn't want to run it until it's 1/8" thick. It's prolly about a quarter right now.

I hate being negative on this site but another 2000 miles on that???
Look at the condition!
Look at that wear mark!
Yeah sure, you could get a few more miles on that tyre. If you were on a CB250 and didn't go over 20mph!
Mate, I'm sure you already know the answer to your question considering you ride a particularly powerful motorbike.
Dont be cheap. Just get a new tyre and negate the risk to yourself and others.

Jeez, why play with your safety or life for a few bucks...

well..... ...I always wonder if I should tell this story...every time I tell it....BUT...I rode a flat tire 200 miles. I stopped a few times to fill it but it was FLAT as in tire squashed between the rim and the pavement when I stopped the bike for air. No blowout, no bead break. I rode my OEM Brigstone BT014 10,000 miles. The bottom of the tread was even with the surface. You can do it if you're feeling lucky.

If there is anything slippery on the road, or wet you might find that you end up sideways on that tyre.

Get yourself a set of Michelin Pilot Road 3's or 4's. Those will get you your 10k miles. I would change that tire ASAP.

I had a heck of a time getting my stand to grab the spools when I had flats. Lift first, puncture second.

The last time I rode on a tire that looked like that, I had a flat when I came out from work. Over filled it and scooted on home. I say change it.

I think the tire has irregular amount of rubber.

I put a MP4 on the front last year. I will use a MP4 on the back.
Should I get a GT rated tire for the back? I travel with 100# of luggage packed/strapped on the back and do most highway travel.
I have my Senior Passport for National Parks and plan to travel as many as I can.

Sounds like your doing tons of miles touring. Thats a no brainer if your racking up miles. Go with the Sport touring tire.

I got almost 7500 miles out of my Michelin PR3's and it fared better than your stock Metzeler.
