TechMount steering stem mount
04/25/13 9:34 AM

Tech Mount makes a variety of mounts to hold camera, GPS, or whatever other gadget needs to be secured to your bike. The Steering stem mount fits into the steering stem at the front of the tank cover. It works well with my GoPro camera. It's well made and comes with adapters to fit any common steering stem hole. The Tech Mount steering stem mount is not as versatile as a mount with a ramball joint but the dual pivot joints can point the camera to almost any angle. It's perfectly stable. I've had mine in and out several times and left the mounting pin in the stem for 6 months at a time. With it's Oring seal in the steering stem, the TechMount still fits snug enough to hold the camera where it is positioned through bumps and wheelies. The pin does not turn in the stem hole so that camera ends up pointed somewhere other than where intended.

I have just one complaint. The stem pin is so tight that it can become impossible to pull out. The pin has 3 Orings. If you push the pin in just far enough so that the bottom two Orings are in the stem, the pin will be held just as securely as if all three were in the stem. If you push the pin all the way in so that all three Orings are in the stem, you won't get it out by normal means. I used a slicone lube on the orings. That may have caused part of the problem. The Orings may have swelled up from the lube--??. Whatever the case may be, the threads in the stem pin were damaged from me pulling on the pin.

In the end, the only way I got the pin out was to insert a 1/2 wood dowel up throughthe bottom of the steering stem and tap with a hammer. The pin was pushed up without much more fuss than that. I had the wheel and fender off for other reasons. I imagine that it would would be necessary to have those parts removed to get a dowel in there. The dowel must be about 12 inches long to reach up through the steering stem.

Hopefully, I will be able to run a thread tap into the top threads to fix them otherwise I will need to order a new pin.

ALso, be advised that mounting a camera in the stem hole will result in the camera view turning with steering inputs. This is really not of much consequence unless you are making very small radius turns. Maybe if you are into gymkahana the steering stem would not be the best location for a camera mount.

Looks like I have the pin pushed all the way in on this pick from a couple years ago. Yes, I think the Orings must have swollen since then.

There is a mounting plate at the top of the mount where your camera or other device with mounting screw may lay
flat against. I have a 3" extension (available from TechMount) on the this setup. It is not of much value for the steering stem view. I haven't used the extension.

The GoPro camera attaches to the mounting plate of the TechMount by a tripod adapter (from GoPro)

The vertical angle adjustment of the mount is secured by indents on the inner surface of the joint.

Below are some pictures showing the view with the GoPro camera using the TechMount steering stem mount at different positions in relationship to the steering stem.

Forward 3 inches

To contrast, this is what a tank mount view looks like with the camera p[laced righ on top of the fuel tank cap.

Here's a vid shot with the GoPro on the Techmount steering stem. You'll notice the camera is off center a bit. That is because the lens of the GoPro is not centered. This can be compensated for to some degree by turning the camera to the right a few degrees...or just crop when you edit.
