Slight clunk in forks ???
07/19/09 11:52 AM

This sounds like maybe some plastic grabbing while hitting a big bump going slow,, or hitting the fronk brakes very hard,, almost like the forks are topping out, or bottoming?

Feels like it on the right handle bar moreso than the left. I check all hex bolts... all were tight.

I wonder if others have had this or not.

This is set up on stock settings, as its a new bike. I will be going to the delaer this week to have them set up the suspension for me , front and rear. Im about 275lbs 6-2 , and I guess stock is set up around 170lbs from the factory.

So,, this kinda started about 4 days ago. Almost feels like the right clip-on bar is being pushed forward?

Thanks in advance.

I get a clunk occasionally from going over a sharp bump(at parking lot speeds).Doesn't seem to hurt anything.....But......you may want to look under the front cowl at your horn there-check the top of the fender for gouges.Could be it's bottoming into the horn.275-that's (no offense) alot of weight on the front end when applying the brakes(or compressing the forks over a bump)I weigh 170,set my preload to 5 bars showing,5 clicks of damping. You're probably gonna need a bit more(!) stiffness there.Ride safe!!!I'd definitely get er checked if she's more pronounced on one side or the other. You could start at the lowest settings on your fork adjustments-make sure they're equal-could be off.If ya do adjust the damping there-DO NOT CRANK DOWN after she hits the bottom click adjustment. She may go past that last click a bit,but don't force it any farther.

silvevo, the suspension is sort of kushy on the 14. I tightened mine up from stock after tapping bottom a few times going up steep parking lot skirts and the like. The suspension adjustment is not hard to do. it's just 2 screws with click stops and one nut that you measure the height of to determine how "tight it is set. It is even covered in the owner's manual and a lot of people around here can answer any questions for you.

There was a good suspension tuning tutorial by 06blue on our last forum. Might be worth while PMing 06 and asking him to post his 'suspension tuning' How-To. Otherwise, I could type it up and post it for you if you want. I don't think 06 would mind if it was to help a fellow rider.

eh- here it is. Check it out.

No pics included. There decent pics in the owner's manual which is a good quick thing to read along with 06's tutorial.

i weigh 250 and when i first got the bike it was lowered and the suspension was not adjusted for a heavy rider. i had clearance issues all the time. i raised the bike back to stock and started playing with the adjustments on the forks and the shock. the best way to adjust your suspension is to make adjustments slowly. only make one slight adjustment at a time until you think you have the right set up for you. the dealer will give you a better idea of where it needs to be, but more than likely, you'll need to make more adjustments as you go. that plastic hitting is probably the tip of the bike's nose hitting the front wheel fender. that's what i think mine was anyway. i've changed front fenders since then too. good luck with the adjustments. at the moment i'm satisfied with the stock suspension. i really don't won't to spend a lot of $$$ on new springs right now.

here's a vid that i've watched several times now http://www.onthethrottle.com/content/view/73/40/

Somewhere I say a tutorial on setting up a suspension on a 14. As I remember anyone much over two hundred pounds, the front springs need to be replaced with stronger ones. On the same token the rear shock could be adjusted up to accommodate a little more weight.
I have to look around to see if I can give a link to that tutorial, maybe I saw it on Youtube.

235 lbs and New York potholes.

I would be interested in hearing about anyone who has beefed up their springs. 1kg rate springs would probably be about right for my weight and maybe heavier oil, but re-valving might have to happen along with the springs...I don't know. Has anyone gone for this?

I sure hope not,, I had to get the race tech 1kg for my old fz6.

I just thought the zx was a much beefer bike,, I kinda found this out too by the gross weight of riders on bike... 398lbs.........lol,, and I thought I was going to be able to 2 up this thing.

Love thezx thou,, and Im not ever going to get close to 100% potential any ttime soon.

Its just a nice cruiser,,, with a buttload of Torque!!!!!

Ill keep you guys posted after I have the dealer set up my front and rear.
