Air horn installation
07/20/09 9:15 AM

I did a search for this but didn't find what I need.

I bought a 2008 ZZR1400 (ZX14) a couple of months ago and found the horn a little weedy. I have a Stebel Magnum air that I bought for my last bike, a VN1600. I want to fit it to the ZZR but i read in another thread here it might hit the front fender if the front dips to much.

Has anyone installed an after-market horn in an alternative location, rather than where the OEM horn is ? any pics would be helpful.

Many Thanks
Al.

Yes the stock horns are whimppy. I'd be interested to know how often others use their horn. I almost never use it. If there is an impending accident I'm too busy maneuvering to think about honking. The last time I tried to use it to get the attention of a driver who almost hit me I couldn't get him to make eye contact. But I'm sitting there with my horn saying excuse me please...
Big bike needs horn to make big noise!!

Horns are over rated and no good unless you are standing still

Over rated? Nope, not for me. My pet peeve is cagers who eek out past the stop sign so they can save a quarter second when they pull out behind me. Can't tell if they see me or not. Since a rolling stop ain't a stop (and carry quite a fine here), I figure I'm doing them a favor when I unleash 17 amps of horn blowing current on them.

To the question of the OP. You cannot fit the horn in place of the stock horn without it hitting the fender. I thought I could, but no matter how I tried it, it simply didn't fit.

I tried to mount mine under the left middle faring. Despite the fact I was able to get it to fit there, it stuck out just enough to make the fairings not fit properly. It's also too close to the headers and the first time you get stuck in traffic, the heat screws up the horn's tone. It goes back to normal as she cools off.

I understand it will fit inside the upper fairing, just behind the headlights and under the speedo pod. I've seen pictures that make it look like it fits pretty good there. The guy had made a plastic bracket of sorts and had it zip tied in place. Next time I have the bike apart I'm going to try to fab a real bracket to mount it in the same place, but with real hardware instead of zip ties.

Make sure you drive the horn with a relay. You can use the stock horn leads to control the relay. Without the relay, the horn sounds like a June bug farting. I'd recommend at least #12 wire for the business side of the horn. I used #10.

I do agree that horns dont work when driving, but a couple yrs ago I was on my 9 at a stop light. There was a Terminix pickup truck infront of me and a dam McDonalds to our direct right. The driver of the pickup truck decided he was hungry wanted a dam Big Mac and proceeded to put his truck in reverse without ever looking over his shoulder or in any of his mirrors... If I had the factory horns there is no way he would have heard me, he almost didn't hear me with the air horns(that I was literally laying on)... needless to say he still hit me cracked my front fairing a tad bit and tore my front fender off....If it wasn't for the air horns he would have been on top of my bike!!!

needless to say he still hit me...

That's when you jump off the bike and start flopping around on the ground grabbing your neck and screaming "WHIP LASH!"

I have my horn installed in the right side fairing behind the right turn signal. It may not be as loud as possible since it is inside the fairing but I find it to be very effective.(sorry no pictures)As stated above you must use a relay to operate it.

You mean, like this? It was basically my "prototype"install.A few refinements and she would be excellent.I did however screw up the horn by trying to "shape" the horn body itself(the plastic).I removed some of the horn baffle where the sound comes out and took off some plastic there which I should have left alone(I didn't realize it would cause the output of the sound to diminish).I ended up not using it for that reason, but had I not done that-This horn was KILLER-VERY LOUD!!!!And worked fine(except for that). The sound came from below the upper fairing there,so the blast was unrestricted.Plus, you couldn't see anything there when she was installed back on the bike.Very cool.May even do it again sometime when I've got the extra bucks to buy a new one.Course I wouldn't be using zipties on the next go round. It would be brackets and such,as Matt planned to do.

Thanks blue07,

I have the Magnum myself, which is slightly smaller than your Nautilus. You've given me an idea with your little mod. If the Nautilus fits up there then it shouldn't be an issue with the Magnum.

I'll have a look later and post back my findings.

Thanks everyone :)

I tried to mount the Hella hi/low dual horns near the stock horn in various iterations. Used a fork, clamp, fashioned some mounting arms, etc. Just can't fit the two horns under there.....I finally just mounted the single (low tone) Hella forward of the original horn with no issues. It is louder than stock, I only notice it hitting the front fender if in a full panic dive. For normal riding and twisties, no issues.

Based on what dhsec5 said I mounted it temporarily inside the right hand side fairing attached to one of the mounting holes for the indicator bracket.

Sorry about the crap iPhone camera. Not taking my DSLR out this hour of the night.

The horn weighs 255grams and I'm not sure if its a good place for it. Would the extra weight put any strain on any of the mountings for the fairing (its still off the bike).

The horn itself is easy enough.

I suppose the Stebel has a compressor with it that you could use a few tips on installing.
