Has anyone assembled or modified the wiring to eliminate unused wires/fittings?
Kind of thinking about trying to build/modify the harness to relocate the ecu to the battery box. Any potential problems with heat in the battery box?

Don't go there. Page 1-16: CAN communication has so many winds around the harness wires; to keep the pulse train from being scattered by noise frequencies infecting the can-com from ECU to dashboard. It says it may affect input signals and that to me means it may be hard starting, running, etc.
Add wires, this adds resistance. Back to poor can-com between parts. Ain't that a bitch!
Signed,
NOLTT(or did you listen to the shop manual I quote from almost every post) is where I get my info so I you and the bike can still communicate.

Holly makes an ecu for our bikes? That's surprising. I didn't think about signal noise, has anyone removed the unnecessary wires and connectors, or would that require modifying the wiring covers and distort the signal as well?

It has recently been discussed on my tuning thread starting about 2/3 down this page. I marked the beginning of the discussion. As you scroll down, you can't miss it.
In a nutshell, Holly makes aftermarket ECUs but they are not set up to hook right up to any specific vehicle. The Holly ECU has its own wiring harness so no problem hooking that up to the Holly ECU. It becomes a pretty laborious task to equip all the bare ended wires with connectors and hook them to the proper sensors and such. Schnitz sells an aftermarket ECU that is equipped to plug right up to all the ZX-14's connectors so that you might say, is an aftermarket ECU made specifically for the ZX-14. There are links to all of this stuff posted by 1bad in the thread
I linked above.
I think we all pretty much came to the conclusion that aftermarket ECUs are the hottest thing since flashing and by a longshot but you will need to have a very good grasp of engine tuning requirements to run them safely. Even if you go with the Schnitz (which is quite expensive), it is not plug and play. Plug, yes. Play, not til you know what you're doing with the programming of the thing.
