Here is a video of my bike. I want some feedback on how the engine sounds
04/30/11 11:38 PM

Hi Everyone,
I bought my bike last month. I have never heard another ZX-14, so i have nothing to compare it to. I just want to make sure nothing sounds out of the ordinary. My old bike was a V-twin Superhawk. So she sounded VERY different. The whining noise is something to get used to, i would love to make that less pronounced. It sounds like a loose belt on a car.

Is there anything that sounds strange?
I took it in high def, so you can click the button to make up it to 720P and it seems to make the sound a little clearer.
Thanks for reading and watching.

Bummer, this site does not allow embedded videos :(
Here is a video from when i bought the bike.

Oh, it is bad. Shoot! When i asked blue about it a while back, he said they all had a whine. I find it pretty annoying.
Well, anyone else have thoughts on it. Maybe an easy way to fix it :)

Ok, so it sounds totally normal?
I know it is hard to recreate the sound using a digital camera. I just want to make sure everything is fine.
Did people look at the second video? That one has the fairing on.

Nice vid Viper. She is whistling pretty good.I think it's okay.Mine does not whistle like that...except when she's in a certain RPM range and gear.I did notice one quick thing though....you took a fast shot of the radiator cap off.I could have sworn I noticed oil floating on that fluid in there....am I wrong?Yes...guess not.It looks okay. That clickety sound is normal(in the first vid).

Thank you blue.
I am going to button her up and start riding again.
I will do a oil change later this week after i do a nice long ride, to get the condensation gone. I dont think it would leave if i just drained her.

I am going to do an oil analysis also when i do the oil change.
I probably will go with Schaeffer's 9000 full synthetic. It has been tested on motorcycles. It is amazing oil. I use it in all my other vehicles.

Can someone please explain what the whistling comes from?
It sounds like a tight chain or something.
Thanks!

Sounds like the chain on the whistle = Tight? Then again, the only way is to static time it. Never running. Running may clear the whistle. Then again, if you pulled the cover and found it loose on the back and forth of the crank [looking for slack] is more accurate to touchy/feely than noise-noise-no noise you back the screw out. Then, you have no clue how much that slack really looks like.

Be careful... Squids thinking they have some experience will tell you different. Get ready to have some fun someone steps up is clock that cocksucker.

obviously your timing chain needs adjustment. usually that sound goes away once it warms up.

Update:
I just adjusted my CCT.
I cannot get the whistle out of the bike.

Please give me any feedback you might have.
Here is an image of where the tensioner is set right now.

This is what it looked like before i adjusted it.:

RE: Here is a video of my bike. I want some feedback on how the engine sounds

Ok, i was really struggling.
I really turned it a lot. It was very easy to move with my fingers. I thought i needed a tool. I probably moved it in about 1/2 of an inch from before.
I was trying to listen for a noise, but i never heard it adjust.
I was hoping i could get rid of the whine.

I wish i had taken a before shot of the CCT from the side to show the difference. I really feel i did move it a lot.
Also I think it was not very tight. I just barely had to move the lock nut. I have the feeling it has been slowly adjusting itself.

+1

IDK what the winining is. I think that is normal. Sounds quite pronounced in your vid but that is prolly the mic position. I noticed I hear much more engine noise with fairings off. fairing on, pretty much just exhaust and the tticka ticka of the CCT for a few seconds. the CCT may rattle longer if the oil is old or the bike has not been started in a long time.

Go to youtube video page>
click below on SHARE>
clickbelow on EMBED>
command/C or highlight and copy all of the code that appears>
Bring code to your post here and command/V or paste the code to message box>
Type youtube tags around code [*outube]CODE CODE CODE[/*outube] (I did not out the y in youtube fro this but that is what you must do to make a proper tag)>
delete all code outside of and including the " marks. The code will start with

http:// and end with US

[*outube]http://www.youtube.com/v/4OslV1-0gF0?fs=1&hl=en_US[/*outube]

Your post will be blank fore a minute but the vid will appear eventually.

change the * to a y and post it in message box--you get this:

.....and I think that sounds pretty normal, the engine whine at idle the rev sounds great. Don't sweat it.

Thanks rook,
I had just figured it out when you updated the post.
Thanks again.
I am a little nervous that i tightened the cam chain too much now. Does anyone have a good image of their tensioner properly adjusted from the side to compare where the bolt is?

1. Find the tight spot in the chain by turning the wheel with bike on rear stand (or just roll the bike but this makes finding the spot difficult as th etight spot is only slightly so..

2. I place a steel rule on the back edge of the belly pan and rest th etop against the back of the undertail area. Note postion of bottom run of chain against the ruler.

3. Pull the bottom run of chain down with only about 4-5 lbs force(I do not believe there is a specified amount of force to use when pulling the chain--i do not pull too hard--how hard you pull can make 1/2" dif it you pull as hard as you can and this will lead to overtightening. pull soft. Loose is okay as long as a little loose. Too tight could mean a snapped chain or at least premature sprocket and chain ware) Measure distance of slack between no pull and full 4-5 lb pull.

4. Pull the top run up in the same manner measuring the distance of slack.

5. Add both bottom run and top run measurements together and you should have 1.5" to 1.3 inch. Go looser rather than tighter.

I measure the top and bottom runs and add together because the swingarm prevents a full range of pulling on just one run of the chain. I think I overtightened mine a bit the firt couple of times. Usually just a tiny bit of adjustment makes a big dif in chain slack. Less than 1 turn on each adjuster is often all that is needed.

I am sorry, thank you for your great reply, but i talking about the cam chain.
I was really confused for a second. I thought that your were saying there was a correspondance between the wheel chain and the CCT.
When i adjust my chain down the road, i will re look at your post.
Thanks!

FOCK!

There went 25 minutes of my life. lol it was worth the laugh.

Sorry, can't help ya on the CCT tension. Saw a vid on adjusting a while back and it looked nit too hard. The timing cover was removed but that was about as intimidating as it got. I will be putting an APE on mine soon. It hardly needs it but I got it just for something to putz with.
