Sprockets & Extended Swing Arm?
09/28/11 5:34 PM

Hello folks,

Let me first start off my stating that I have never stretched a bike. So any advice, from any of you, who have experience doing this is greatly appreciated.

Although, I occasionally visit the "pucker zone" and "gun it" every once in a while, I do not intend to enter the drag races. I'm mainly doing this mod for cosmetics (yes, I'm one of those wierdos who actually like the way this type of set-up looks on a 14).

I have a a set of "Roaring Toyz" swingarm extensions. I plan on stretching the rear 6-8 inches. I just purchased a 530/150 tooth chain(EK 530drz2-150). Here are my questions:

(1) How will the longer chain effect my performance? Do I need to go down a tooth or two on the sprockets to maintain my current level of performance? Or do I just keep my stock sprocket set-up?

(2) If I need to go up/down some teeth on the front/rear sprockets, what is the recommended set-up? How many teeth front/rear? Please keep in mind that I don't want a bike that pops a wheelie at every traffic light.

(3) My sprockets look good, do I still need to replace the front and rear sprockets, since I am installing a new chain? If so, do both need to be replaced?

(4) Any insider advice that you guys could share that you think a "newbie" should know about doing this install?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

1. I would think there is some physics to the length x torque x's time. But, would not the same ratio not affect anything like all it takes is more time out of the that distance you added?; which is sort of nothing. More, you have a lot more leverage to leave the light without wheeling. Sort of takes up some HP is that time added in length. So, no change sprocket wise would be one option.

2. Again, remain stock and have your baseline. Wait for the swing-a extenders to add to this Q.

3. Ya know, the first time you wiped your ass, that toilet paper was sorta new. Seems you are going to wipe with the same sprockets and wear down a new chain or accelerate that new chain somewhat shorter; than if it ran with new toilet paper. Shit'inn good question; you have to weight that balance between used and new meshing parts [against each other again].

4. Yes, carry the wheel over the intersection, not show a lot of air or the front tire is higher than a semi's cab, the tire stem trying to grab hold of the chain an toot the air horns. Remember >> how you removed that swing and how much load it had on it. Wait for someone giving swing setup torquing.

I have mine 6" over with stock gearing and I love it front wheel stays down, handles great but you will probably need a different shock spring if you do any two up riding I am running a Busa spring.
