LSL / Spiegler Frame Sliders
06/04/12 3:12 PM

I was leaning towards purchasing a set of LSL frame slider pucks and mounting HW from Spiegler Performance for my new ZX-14R.

When I attempted to place the order, the drop down menu's on their website did not allow me to purchase for the 2012 model year.

I've read enough posting to lead me to believe the last model year they post as available (2011) would likely fit the 2012 model, but I called them on the phone anyway.

I got two serprising bits of info from the tech at Spiegler, on the phone.

When I asked about availability for the 2012, and whether or not the 2011 would fit, he told me the 2012 set was not yet available from LSL (I think, in Germany). He then told me he could not guarantee fitment for the 2011 set onto the 2012 model. OK, I said, I guess I'll wait until they're available. How long? Dunno....

Then I asked about the potential for damage. What I think I understand is that the LSL / Spiegler brand would likely do less damage to the engine mounts / frame in a hard impact, due to the offset of the slider with respect to the mount. OK, I'll believe that for the moment, it seems a simple matter of allowing the "offset" lever arm to "flex, or bend as it's absorbing the impact.

But, when I asked the tech rep. about this "feature", he told me that these sliders are not intended to save the fairing parts, but are strictly intended to save the (more expensive) frame and engine mount parts, when used by racing riders. The idea is: save the frame, forget the fairings. Apparently, they're not "long" enough (dont stick out far enough) to save the fairing parts from damage.

Well, what I want is both! Less (no) damage to the frame is great, but I would also prefer to not replace expensive (to me!) fairing parts, either.

Can anyone please tell me their experience with low speed slides, or at-rest tip-overs, to tell me if these parts did or did not help you save the fairing parts from damage?

I'm interested to hear as well. Are there any other Frame sliders for our bikes? Things like driveway tip overs (shit happens) really tear up fairings. Low sides of course are worse. I low sided my VFR a few years back and the sliders saved a lot of parts, still had a fair bit of damage but could have been much worse.

Talked some more with the Spielger tech rep. He told me that he's got a question about this into the LSL factory, and to check back in about a week. I'll let you know when I know...

I understand why no one wants to talk about their "down time", and I dont blame ya.

I checked back with them via phone.

Tech assistance told me that the LSL 2011 model frame sliders definitely do not fit without mods to the fairings.

He also mentioned that LSL factory has just got this set through R+D, and would likely be available soon (date TBD). Check back in a couple weeks...

Thanks keep us updated I definitely want to get some sliders on this thing, if nothing else if it ever tips over it's a bit more protection. I went down a few years ago on my VFR, low side, and they really saved what could have been a lot more damage.

Yes they have a kit in R&D for this model. We are looking at a couple months before they release the kit to us.

Looked into GSG Frame Sliders, US Distributor Twisted Throttle replied:

Hi Bob,

We are no longer purchasing products from GSG and only have what remains in our stock. R&G racing has already produced a full line of crash protection for the 2012 ZX14 you can view the parts at the following link: http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productlist/908/

Thanks
- Greg G.

...so, looks like TT is done with GSG. I tried GSG direct, their website is in Swiss German, only, and do not show a ZX-14R model for sliders. No Love...

Thanks, Ninja.

I've seen these in pictures. I've also seen pictures of results of sliders that attach as these do, to the engine mounts.

If these hit from a 0 MPH drop (a tip-over), you're gonna wish you waited for the LSL's. The GSG's will break your engine mounts. This is strictly my .02, but it's based on a careful study, and I'm a tedious attention-paying decades-old career engineer.

I'll add that the folks at Speigler have told me the LSLs are race type, and will not prevent 9not designed to prevent) damage to the fairings (which I would really like, too). But, I was assured (and my study indicates) the frame will be OK. I believe them, and I'll take what happens to the fairing with a grain of salt, being I did something stupid and now I'm paying for it.

I'm gonna continue waiting...

After waiting patiently on LSL to finish manufacturing frame sliders for the 2012 ZX-14R, I got word today from Spiegler (LSL US dist.) that LSL will not be making them for the 2012 and later ZX-14R.

No word as to why, they're just not gonna make them.

This info obtained from Spiegler, who said they got it as a "press release" from LSL on 8/24.
