Ulysses Pegs on a 2012 and other comfort stuff
06/05/12 8:48 AM

I've been reading a bunch of posts on the Ulysses pegs on the ZX for comfort. I haven't been able to find out if anyone has done this on a '12. When I look at the exhaust on the right side it just doesn't look like there is room for a peg to go down at all without hitting the exhaust. Also if you have done this what has to be modified for these to work and can I get them at any Harley Dealer? Part Number? Any info would be great.

I've got a long trip to VA from FL coming up 4th of July so I'm getting my Heli Block, Grip Puppies, Windscreen, Throttle lock and Corbin seat all setup and would really like to knock this mod out as well. My guess is with this setup the 14 should be all day comfortable without issue. I know my CBR1100XX Blackbird had a similar setup (VFR bars, DB Screen, Corbin, Throttle lock) and it was easy to do 600 mile days.

Any other info on comfort or suggestions would be great. I have a Victory Vision that I use for touring and debated just taking that instead of the 14 but I really want to take the 14 to the mountains at least once. I just did 2200 miles on my Vision last weekend where I went to St. Louis to see some friends, with some stops in Nashville and the Smokies...

Thanks guys/gals...

There is almost 4mm clearance between the Ulysses peg and the heat cover on the right side of the 2012. The left side there is no problem.

Excellent thanks! What mods are necessary to mount these? Is it just drill the mounting holes out a touch larger for the pin to go through I found a part number N0006.1AD, does that sound right?

I also found part number N0006.1AK which are for the Ulysses instead of the firebolt I guess. These are in black which I thought I read the only modification needed to put them on was drill the holes out a little vs all the grinding on the 1AD pegs

Here:

Buell Pegs on Fleabay

I'm sure those are the ones. I've put these on a couple blackbirds and it took a little modding of the peg but nothing too hard. I should really put a set on my 14.

Thanks Hank I saw those as well. From what I can tell the 1AD pegs take a bit more modding and aren't as heavy duty or good as the black 1AK pegs. Have you used these? Doesn't look like it would break just sort of regurgitating what i've read. For $37 that's pretty cheap, the 1AK's are $86, so over double the price...

I have the black buell pegs. Thought those were the Ullyses ones? they cost more, I paid like 80 bucks for em.

Im not sure the part number at the moment, but in addition to drilling out the holes, i had to grind some of the material around the hole to make them match the factory pegs. Also, the rt side one just touches the exhaust shield, so I had to grind some of the bottom at an angle. I didn't do quite enough, so it made a 2cm scratch on the shield. no biggie tho. I can live with it.

and, I dont really care how "pidgeon toed" it makes you when you try and use the rear brake. I dont use it much, so I might not adjust the lever. dunno yet. I do have to adjust the shift lever too, since Ive found myself shifting to neutral from 1st a couple of times if Im not a bit more aggressive with the motion.

Well I got the $37 ones to try out, it seems many have used both and like both so we'll give it a shot.

Whose throttle lock did you go with?

I went with the Vista Cruise throttle lock. About $35 and work great. Ive put them on damn near everything. You have to do a little shaving to get it to fit but when it's done it looks and works great.

Also got my phone mount and gps mount done too.

And all taken apart for LED install

So the Corbin peg lowering kit is just a plate that lowers the stock pegs?

Could you just fabricate your own that actually fits the '12 without hitting the heat shields?

From what I gather it's more than that, it does something with the brake lever as well.

Its actually the Otter Box holster with the clip removed. I used velcro on the ends to keep it in place and stop sliding around and used the zip ties around the triple tree to ensure it never comes off while riding. I figure zip ties are cheap if I need to remove it I'll cut them, buying a new phone sucks lol...

I just installed a set of the ebay pegs on my '12 this weekend. This made a HUGE difference for me.

I've always hated the peg position on the bike. It's an odd combination of forward and high that just felt wrong to me. The Buell pegs drop the peg height all of an inch and it makes a huge difference.

I had to take about .110" off the bottom off the lower mounting "ear" and drill the hole out to .469 to make them fit. The right peg needed a little grinding on one corner to clear the goofy heat shield.

I moved the shifter down 1 spline and adjusted the brake pedal the same.

It was an easier fit up than it was when I mounted them to my Blackbird, which also required shortening of the pegs on the mounting point.

Can you please post a picture or describe what is involved in mounting these pegs. I also purchased the pegs and drilled the mount hole out. I would appreciate any info on how to adjust the brake pedal and a pic would be great. Thanks!

Here is a crappy pic.

I circled the areas of modification. Like I said I took about .110 off the bottom "ear" and knocked the other corner off with a grinder. I used a milling machine for the .110 removal, but it can also be done with a grinder. You could take an equal amount of the upper and lower ear but I like to leave the top one full thickness as its in tension if you stand on the peg while the bottom ear would be in compression. Cast aluminum will be stronger in compression than tension

Hope it helps.

The rod between the master cylinder and the pedal is threaded. There are two nuts where it attaches to the pedal (jam nuts). Crack the top jam nut loose, screw the rod into the lower nut further till you get the pedal where you want it then retighten the top jam nut.

Is vibration more noticeable with solid pegs?

No real vibration that I've noticed. I really like them it makes a difference for such a small adjustment. As for the brake pedal make sure you also adjust the black plunger on top so the brake light functions again otherwise it's stuck on.

The shifter I moved down one but really didn't like that the little nub that's on the kickstand kept getting in my way when I tried to shift and it was really annoying. I put it back to the stock spot. The upshift if just fine and is smooth again and the downshift you just have to lift your toe a touch higher. A couple runs through the gears and it starts to feel totally natural. Do this combo with the Heli blocks and it's really nice.

Definitely more natural. I found when I would stretch a bit when riding I wouldn't lift my feet high enough to get on the peg but with this they go right where they are supposed to. Love it!
