breakaway cruise control
01/25/11 10:17 AM

I got a Crampbuster ($11) for those long stretches, but did look into the ones you can't lose or forget to bring. Throttlemeister, Universal Vista, Cruise Mate (these run $35-$125), but these require you to turn them off and then brake, in an emergency that's not good. The only one to solve an emergency potential is Brakeaway (nearly $200) which turns the throttle control off when you hit the brake (one natural action is much faster than two). They don't make the Brakeaway for the zx14.
Has anyone "fixed" a throttle resistance device to be turned off when using the brake?

I think the only other way to make this happen is to install one of those high-priced electronic cruise controls (~$800) which comes with the mounting hardware for the buttons installed just beneath the stock controls on the left handlebar. I use a Kaoko throttle lock cruise control on mine and you basically move your hand over toward the end of the throttle where the Kaoko is located and twist the throttle to the desired speed and let go. To unlock, slide hand to end and roll the opposite direction to unlock the Kaoko device. Pretty simple. I think there's a video on YouTube if this interests you.

Your Throttlemiester will easily close when turning the grip closed. There is no "double turning" with it.If you cannot turn the throttle closed with the unit set on cruise, you've not got it set right. They send small washers to allow you to fine tune the grip set. With your stock clip-ons,the unit works excellent.

Good info, I'm considering the Throttlemeisters for mine - put the Vista cruise on my wife's Intruder, but she has yet to use it......very simple install though.
Throttle rocker came on her bike, but she didn't like it so it's on my bike now - not a bad little device, does help on long hauls

Dood, just get a Audiovox CCS-100 electronic cruise control for $175 and not worry about it. I put one on my 14 and use it all the time, works just like a car's system. I'v gone 50 miles in the highway without having to touch the bars at al, lol.

Here's a link to a install on a Concours 14 but its basicly the same.

I'm another vote for the throttlemeister, best mod for long distance riding and no issues when needing to throttle off fast as stated above ^^

Hi All, this is my first ever post to one these forums but I thought I would share my opinion seeing it's seems to be relevant. Absolutely Love my ZX14 but like many my right wrist gets a little tired on long runs. I put a lot research into this one and long story short decided to fit the BrakeAway product.
I know they don’t make one specifically for the ZX14 but the 6CB03-03 model can be easily adapted to suit. No modifications were required I just simply fabricated an additional mounting bracket to give it a bit more stability and needed to source a longer mounting screw for my right hand switch housing. The bracket is a little hard to see in photograph cause I’ve painted it black, it is basically banana shaped and goes between the brake lever pivot bolt nut and the BrakeAway mount to avoid any radial loading on the switch housing. It took a bit of fiddling to adjust it perfectly but I couldn’t be happier with the finish result, gentle thumb pressure locks the throttle, if I want to adjust the speed of the bike I can easily overcome the resistance of the lock and the moment I go near the Brake lever it snaps off. Hope this helps.

I tried to upload photos but still truying to figure out how

Kaoko is the way to go IMO. It belnds in with the bike, itr's not klunky looking and it's easy to use. You can even use it as a palm massager. Not mention it takes one minute to install and comprises two moving parts and bolt. $90 last time I checked at Twisted....

Each to their own, but not a big fan of throttle locks like Kaoko. A good mate (that's aussie for friend)of mine was riding his moto guzzi le mans along the highway with a similar throttle lock engaged, some moron pulled out in front of him and Evan (my mate) had to do some quick evasive manoeuvres. He grabbed a handful of brake but couldn’t release the throttle lock in the time he needed to. Luckily he didn’t hit the car but ended up at the bottom of a gravel embankment with a bit of gravel rash and a bruised ego. He will never use a throttle lock device again.
The BrakeAway may be a little clunky, but I have the peace of mind of knowing that in a panic situation the moment I grab a handful of brake the throttle lock will release.

I understand how they work ErickR and I believe it was set up properly on his bike. I think it was the element of time. From the way he told the story I don't think Evans hand was on the throttle he was resting it on his thigh, it was a panic situation and he has gone as quick as he can for the brake. It's not a fluid action to turn the throttle off whilst braking, sure it can be done and most of us would have the dexterity to do so but when you are talking precious seconds between miss or hit I'd rather buy myself that extra time.

No offense intended, Brenny, but your mates inexperience with running a throttle lock is by no means any reason for everyone to condemn them. Really, I mean no offense. You have to use some common sense and realize that some things may take more effort to accomplish and plan for it and PRACTICE the maneuver until it gets to be second nature. I don't ride around with my right hand as far away from the bars as I can get it just because I have the lock on. Taking your hand off is only for appropriate times, which isn't in town or in traffic. Specifically, the Kaoko is different because it actually acts on the end of the throttle tube, more likely the eighth of an inch of rubber grip hanging off it which makes the action of letting off the gas loosen the whole unit whether you touch the Kaoko or not. In extreme cases, a panicked hand could easily twist the throttle back no matter how tight the lock is which I would imagine is how every lock is meant to operate. I use it for cruising and maintaining speed which can get tiring on a long trip where just laying your hand on the grip and not having to actually hold it twisted can be a lifesaver, especially for my carpal tunneled wrists. Shit happens though and sometimes you just don't react quick enough or in the right manner and you get in trouble, that's just the risk you take riding. Would you say just because having three pieces of luggage and a passenger can make you stop 100 feet farther than if you were solo with no bags does means it is more dangerous and shouldn't be done? I say not if the rider is skilled in riding with luggage and passenger weight. I believe everyone just has to know their limitations and ride within them.

On a side note, I will admit when you are first getting used to the Kaoko it can be very frustrating trying to find the right spot to 'tie' it down because the 14 just wants to accelerate from any throttle position especially when you're dealing with any kind of grade changes where it is more of a distraction than a benefit. However, I like having it there for the right circumstances - long flat boring 70mph highways.

No offence taken at all Edgecrusher, to be honest Evans nickname is "Crash" because if shit happens it usually happens to him. He's a good friend to have cause we all learn from his mistakes before we make them ourselves. LOL. I agree with you wholeheartedly we all should know our limitations and not ride beyond them. And to be totally honest I probably shouldn't have commented on the Kaoko variety as I've never had any first hand experience with them just read about them only, the one in question was called a 'Quickloc' according to Evan he bought it from a local accessory shop about 8 years ago.

I like how solidly constructed the BreakAway setup is vs. the Vista, but I'm leaning towards the ThrottleMeister for simplicity's sake as well as cleaner asthetics

I'm hoping you can tell me how you fabricated that additional mounting bracket?

Doh, call me the noob idiot!

You presented a great description of the "additional bracket" you fabricated, but I do not see it in any of the pictures you've supplied. Might I please have a closeup of that bracket?

Thanks, kindly.

Hi mebgardner,
I havent been here for ages, just happened to log on and saw your question. The bracket is actually in the pictures but I painted it black and it is very hard to see. Bear with me and I'll take some better pictures of the set up and post them up.
