Mods for new bike
12/25/09 2:33 PM

Hello all,

I am planning on purchasing a 2008 Silver next week. I already have a list of mods I want to implement over the winter to have ready for the spring. I would appreciate any input on the best places to purchase or acquire these items.

1. GenMar Handlebar risers
2. Black side panels (foreman grills)
3. Muzzy M14 full exhaust
4. If anyone has any input on the best place to get the rims powdercoated in the Denver area.

If the bike doesn't already have a Power Commander, you'll need that before putting on the exhaust. Make sure you can get a map from whoever you order the pipe from. The people that you buy the PC from may also have a map for that pipe.

Do some research on which PC you want. There are new PCVs and the previous PCIII out there for sale but both models are not compatible with all the same peripherals like autotune and the LCD display.

You will also want a new air filter(BMC) and a 16 tooth front sprocket.

^^Or 45 t rear------just as good as 16/43, I hear. I'd do the gearing after you ride a while. I don't absolutely need that much power yet and gas mileage suffers a little bit with lower gearing.

I hear BMC race filter and street filter flow almost the same. It's only a couple hp you will pick up either way so you might want to go on the safe side and use a street filter if you ride in dusty conditions. Or you can swap out between OEM and race filter. Some people have removed the metal backing on the OEM filter to improve flow.

Parker Co is well above 5000 feet altitude so much gearing will help a lot without being too much. Mileage from what I can figure won't be effected relative to sea level also because of the 15% or so less of cylinder filling.

Find a good shop to get a dyno tune at for your elevation.
Do a search, and eliminate the fresh air system, choose a exhaust system, a air filter and contact these guys for your power commander;
http://www.fuelmotousa.com/

Then go get it tuned for Co.

Or realize that you dont ride enough for all this spending and keep it stock (other than the GenMar)
I see tons of low mile ZX14s for sale. Usually 60 cents on the dollar for a low mile unit. Or worse.
Why bother building power you will never use?
Why spend money that will never be recovered by use and definitely gone on resale ?
Just go with a 16 tooth counter sprocket and be happy.

You know, what got me started was the need for a good (read louder and melodic) exhaust system. From there you may find the dominoe effect take over!
Muzzy will give you a map for that M14 exhaust, even if you don't buy direct from them. The map I got from Muzzy was the best I had until I got a custom map. (Another option, FAICS custom maps) There is an advantage to buying the Power Commander from an outfit like FuelMoto because they have an assortment of maps available. Although they don't have the best track record for response time. The DynoJet company offers a pathetic few maps for their Power Commander. Tuning on a Dyno machine ($200+) is costly and you should wait until all your mods are in place to have it done*. The ZX14 has an altitude sensor to automatically adjust for thinner air so doing a Dyno for that alone is not necessary.
You can get OK deals on E-bay for a lot of "things." But not like the old days when good deals were the norm. It now seems to be a place for people to try to get rich! I've seen stuff on E-Bay offered for more than many retailers sell for! You can also check the For Sale sections of the many motorcycle forums. Some killer deals there.
I would agree with riding stock gearing for a while. The 14 will seem Uber fast no matter what your old ride was. You'll enjoy just trying to hang on running stock. But eventually, if you're like most of us, you'll want a little more pick up.

*I'm on month 9 of adding mods and might never be done. It's kind of addictive. It's kinda like owning a boat. You know, a hole in the water into which you pour money you don't need.

Thanks to all for your responses. However, my real question is this..."Where are the best places to purchase the items I originally listed"? And I guess by best I probably mean cheapest. Granted, I want good service as well but modding this bike is going to be addictive and expensive.

On a side note, I keep finding myself going between the Muzzy M14s and the M4 retros. I understand that I will not get the performance increase with the M4s but the look and sound has them in a slight lead. I just don't see at this point or in the near future where I will need the additional HP that the M14s offer. I also tend to prefer the dual exhaust as opposed to the single. Thought?

You want expensive? Try having 5 bikes 1100cc to 1400cc and the inability to keep anything stock.

I had the GenMar risers, but didn't like the way they fit. They pull on the front brake lines, if your running the stock ones, and the master cylinder hits the top inside of the fairing on full lock.
I found that the HeliBars fit much better, but just a tad lower by about a .250 inch.

Go choice on the color BTW.

I don't know that there is one cheapest place to buy stuff. All you can do is type in a search and look for the lowest price. Always helps to have a recommendation or three for good customer service. If the bike is a huge part of your life, don't go cheap on the mods or you will be spending way more on upgrading than if you just got what was best in the first place. I wanted M-4s at first too because they look great and have nice sound. It's a great exhaust but I would have probably sold them and upgraded by now.
If you just want to get stuff on there to try it out before upgrading, i would look for used stuff on ebay or Craigslist.

The first thing you need is a PC. That would be best even if you do go with slipons. Personally, i think the PCV is the best choice because it's not much more money and it's the latest thing. It won't make a huge change to a stock bike but it will help some and you will be set for future mods. When you are ready to buy a pipe, buy it from a reputable tuner that has a map designed for that pipe on the 14. HPC seemed to work well for me.

If you buy add on electronics for your PC, I would recommend buying from Dynojet because all that stuff is getting rather complicated for suppliers to advise customers on. It requires a specialist.

Yeah...I was just looking at 58cycles today. They have a great price on the Muzzy M14 with the M10 megaphone. I was leaning towards the M4 exhaust due to the black color but the M14 was a little over $200 more so I'm thinking I have to go with it. Thanks for your response RVTech.

It's a hot bike for the strip. Think you might rub the mudflap or drag the oil pan on the street? tmos34
