I am like you when it comes to using old (clean) underwear as a rag, but when it comes to tires, I never take any chances. Tires can be the most expensive risk to take... even if nothing happens to you at speed, a slow wobble and a dump at say 5mph as you're coming to a stop can cost a few hundred dollars in fairing repairs. Why take a risk on this if you don't have to?

I counted the tires on my bike - only 2 ! - one in front, one in back ! I dont mess around with worn tires, I have better things to do than slide down the road on my ass, this bike has the power to overwhelm just about any street legal tire, why take a chance?
And yes, I have had experiance with flats/blowouts, best record to date was with Goodyears - 9 flats in 5 days, including 2 high speed blow outs (1 front, 1 rear) 2 up with the wife - never went down, but the front was dam close.
Never rode Goodyears again, but hey! that was in the 70's with tubes and on a harley - but still ... since tubless tires were available for motorcycles I have never had a flat since (knock on wood)best things since tits.

I'm running an avon storm on the rear of the 14, and conti road attacks on the busa. I can honestly say the road attacks REALLY sharpened up the busa's handling I've put a couple of rides on the busa now, and it looks like from a quick visual inspection the road attacks won't be lasting as long as the storm tho. And since the storm handles pretty darn good as well, thats prolly the tire the busa will wear next

Good to hear from you and glad you're back with us, dattaway. I think we just about have the whole team of experts back together now.
Yeah, I remeber you explaining that 'a tire carcass is extremely tough' way back when I was worrying about little bits of rock embedded in my tires. These are the same tires and I'm not too worried about rock shards anymore. I finally wore the center tread smooth tonight. I got a little lift on the front one time and I did about ten miles of 90 - 100mph. I got the bike to 140 which is my fastest this season. What a hoot to have the throttle cut and still be sailing by the other traffic as the inertia of me and the bike pulls against the engine. The tire has held up fine but now that I have my long sought after smooth center, it's time to change. Maybe just one quick burnout first.
Thanks for advice dattaway.

"I'm still trying to decide how to hold the break"
Rook the zx14 as to be the easiest bike in the world to do a burnout on. Get your butt off the seat, pull the clutch in,grab a hand full of brake, and roll onto the throttle while slowly letting the clutch out. You will feel the front compress and the rear will start to rise spin. I wouldn't dump the clutch at 6k on a zx14 if you have never done a burn out. The bike may push off the front break and you'll dump it or you might freak out and release the break and flip it once the back tire hooks up.

I had 8078 miles on the stock BT-014s. I changed them because the front had cords showing. The rear still had some tread, and was probably good for a couple hundred miles.
I went to BT-016s - it's worth it to change the tires just because it feels so good.

^^ Wow, hard breaking on the front, maybe? You will probably always reign the only guy in history to go 8000 miles on one set of tires and doing stoppies with your 14. LOL My front still looks pretty good.

I do go pretty easy on my bikes, especially this one. It's too easy for it to write a check I can't cash.
The cord that I had showing was to the left of the center (sitting on the bike), not right in the middle. Apparently I am little harder on that side. I do brake hard on the front, but I think the reason the front wore out quicker was it was underinflated. No stoppies for me - not brave enough.
My bike is primarily commuting, and my drive is only 9 miles one way mostly surface streets with some stopping.

^^I agree about the 14's potential to rack up astronomical crash bills. Much rather let her write checks for mods, IMO. Still, I do plan to be opening that throttle a little quicker soon as i get my new tires on. Welcome to the 8000 mile club. I bet there's more than a few of us who are members but we just won't admit it

i tend to change my tyres when the performance degrades to and unacceptable level (for me anyway) whether it is squaring off or just getting to the wear indicators, ive hardly ever had bald tyres (a couple of times ive had to wait on tyres being delivered).
the zx14 is the first bike ive had where i wear out front and back at the same time and i get about 3-4000miles on bt016, im on my 3rd set!

My dream is to wear out the edges on the back tire before the center goes bald.....I hate square tires!

I hope my BTO-16 190/55s will give me a little more ware in the middle so the tire will stay round longer. They look oval unmounted so it seems the shape will degrade to more of a circle before they get to the squared off stage. Interested to see if the shape rounds out when they are mounted and inflated.
