A better helmet
06/16/15 1:33 AM

I have a HJC helmet that is comfy, fits easily. The issue I am having and am looking to fix is at high speeds, the helmet visor vibrates like crazy, distorts my forward vision somewhat. I often do +100mph and it is really annoying having the helmet push back and the visor bounce all over.

Any recommendations for a helmet that remains stable at high speeds?

Shoei has a locking face shield. I've never had it rattle locked or unlocked. I have a cheap helmet where the face shield flies up at high speed. Sorta sucks but it was $30.

Very happy with my Nolan N104, being flip face is nice and I've had it at top speed with no issues (quite a bit of buffeting, but no rattles etc.). Airflow is great and helmet is fairly quiet. The shell's a tad larger either due to Nolan or being flip-face, it's definitely no racing helmet. Controls and features of the helmet are nice, I really like the clicker chin strap. It has a sunvisor. Viewport is good. The only thing missing imo is a screen lock, although up to abut 70mph the screen will stay open 1 click.

I also have a Scorpion Exo 500. I like it, physically the shell is a little smaller than the Nolan especially the lower 1/3rd (obviously not a flip face). Airflow is not nearly as good as the N104. Except for some air noise doesn't seem to make a difference if the vents are open or closed. Has internal sunvisor. Controls are a tad more clunky than the Nolan. It has a screen lock but it's not very precise. Traditional chin strap. Viewport is good.

I'm comparing a ~$200-250 helmet vs. a $500 helmet so that counts for something. The EXO 500 is slightly more comfortable at high speed stuff (slightly less buffeting). I think it's just the physically smaller shell size. Most of the time I wear the Scorpion.

I can recommend either of these for what you're looking for.

I have a Arai Corsair V. Extremely stable, no buffeting at all. Very noisy helmet though, but nice if you where earplugs. Also flows a ton of air. Check out the Bell Star, also made for high speed and they go on sale all the time. Avoid Bell RS1, great helmet but rattles my head at high speed.

I like my Bell Qualifier, fits snug but comfortable, and stable at high speeds, a bit noisy as well.

I just bought a Shoei GT Air. Very quiet inside and the shield doesn't move. It doesn't have the locking lever that my RF1000 had, but I'm not too concerned.

You need to consider the shape of your head for comfort/fit too. I was a Shoei guy for over 30 years, but the last one I owned didn't seem to fit as well. After months of researching and comparing, I tried a Bell Vortex. It had more of an oval shape, and fits my head like a glove. No more "nose touching the chinbar" at high speed, or the pressure point at the top of my skull with the Shoei. It's noisier, but ($180) also less than half the price of a Shoei. This is why I don't recommend helmets. Every model is a different shape. Other Bells are round instead of oval.

Alg8er makes a good point on fitment so make sure wherever you order/purchase from has a hassle free return policy.

Yep, that's priority number one for me. If you've ever had a helmet on for a long period of time that doesn't match your head shape, it doesn't take long before you've got a nice headache.

I wish my head fit into cheaper helmets. :D

Looks like Shoei Air is the winnner, though a lot of others. I will give that a shot since I am have had this helmet a few years and time for a new one.
