Fuel tank
12/27/09 11:09 PM

Hub, Have a problem with my fuel tank. 2008 with 8,000 Klms standard bike . When I stop for fuel the cap won't open it has a vacuum lock . I guess that there's a breather pipe or two,I tried the cap itself OK. I blew through the pipe thats under the cap that runs down to the gear shifter all OK, Tried the one thats under the cap runs down inside the tank coming out at the ass end of the tank NO GO. I believe it runs to a separator , canister system. Am I heading in the right direction, and can these bits be cleaned or are they toast.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply.
Tank looks normal, bike runs great, no issue with stalling, idle etc etc etc . only complaint is I can't open filler cap . This only started a couple of days ago, will run with it for awhile and see how it pans out . I do have a bad habit ( or two ) were I always try to max fill the tank as sometimes its a long way between stations, and I try to squeeze that extra liter in there . Maybe I shot myself in the foot here and caused a downstream problem
Thanks for your time and help. will let you know what happens

I have had my cap stick shut a time or two and I am pretty sure i have heard of others who said the same thing. Maybe the gasket gets a little sticky from over filling?? I don't recall having the lid stick at all after the first year.

Thanks Rook, I can hear a suck or gush of air rush into the tank when I pry the cap open with a screwdriver or similar. Its not that hard to pry open but enough that you would think something must be wrong.

Ya-there's a problem, that's for sure-better get er sorted out before you permanently damage your tank. Some guys had that happen to their tanks-sucked an indent right at the flat area just below the front/side of the seat edge on both sides.Hub's right on the money-should be no vacuum in there.Sounds like a kinked or blocked vent tube. You can look at that area at an angle and see "if" she's beginning to pull in there. You'll see that the flat area will not be flat across the center of it if it's beginning to damage the tank.It will have an inward bow going on.If it's bad enough, the clearcoat and paint will slightly crack on the surface and begin to separate from the tank itself-that's when it's "too late" to correct it!You may not notice it just riding every day.Any strange appearing circular "scratch marks" right there in the clearcoat? On page 3-126 of the service manual-it says that if liquid or fuel enters the canister-it's absorbing properties will be greatly reduced-replace canister if this has occurred.I suppose an overfilled tank could cause liquid fuel to run into the canister(especially if the temps were enough to expand the fuel). If the canister were contaminated, maybe it could cause an equalization problem somehow?).Methinks yer canister is gummed up with overfilling fuel.(it does state to blow the breather hose out if fuel overflows into it).Mine has no canister-so I don't have that thing going on when I fill mine"to the brim".Doubtful that your breather line just "suddenly" got "plugged or kinked".Pg 3-128 shows the inspection items to check at the cap itself.Ya didn't git a big bad bug stuck in yer cap breather inlet did ya?Maybe crushed him in there whilst closing the cap?

WEll I found something, I lifted the seat then took of all the bits for the tank lift, lifted the tank up and around but not out. In the middle of the tank are two rubber mounts that support the centre of the tank, on the right hand side there are pipes that run from the rear of the tank along down that side. I believe that one of them is called the Atmospheric vent Line ( HUB ) this line was caught between the rubber block and the mount on the chasi squashing it flat. I moved the tank around a bit and found that if you lift at the rear of the tank it will come out of its keeper and come to rest on the mount, when you lower the tank it gets squashed. Pipe looks OK I helped it back to shape and will keep an I on it. I blow through that pipe with compressed air, before it was blocked now its free.
How did this happen I don't know, may be from new but took along time to show up ? dealer ? . will go for a blast when it stops raining, but I think she will be good

Thanks - Hub, Blue, Rook for your help. you solved a problem on the other side of the World and didn't have to leave the house.

No problem for 7900klms

Been raining and with Christmas been off the bike a bit since service.

Hose didn't look like it had been that way for all that long. and went back to shape after a little while.

Can't talk to the dealer, there closed for a week or so over Christmas, but I will when they return.
Its been a month since it was in there , my guess is that it came out of the shop with it but I wasn't rideing it to know.

Yep-glad ya found the pesky little pri#&!!!!Your problems are OVER!!!!.........saying that-NOW-with "replacing the tank"-you DID make sure that the FUEL LINE from the fuel pump IS NOT PINCHED between the bumper and fuel pump?(when you reinstalled the tank)-please say you made sure it was riding along the side of that piece!!!!!!!!!Somehow-that line just wants to ride over that bumper just as easy as pie!!!
