GIVI PLX V35 MOUNTS?
07/16/10 5:07 AM

Anyone with the sw mount have any trouble with the retaning spring washers? I took my mount off and 3 of the springs split in two,2 on 1 side and 1 on the other.

I have just had the same problem. 2 of mine have broken and fallen out.
Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Which is why I am buying the SW-MOTECH PLX racks. They are rock solid reliable. AND let me use the top rack for a top case, too.

Privateer, aren't you able to remove the SW-MOTECH PLX racks with the locking screws?I thought all sw mounts where removable that's why I bought it instead of the GIVI hardware.

Privateer.
I do have the SW-Motech racks. We are talking about the spring washers in the quick release clips breaking and falling out. I love the racks and the design. I just need to figure out where to get spring washers that fit to replace the ones that have broken.
I have only had my racks for 6 weeks and 1200KM with them on the bike. The bags were empty most of the time.

Ok, just find a contact phone or email in your instructions/documenations and ask SW-MOTECH. They are made in Germany. Or, just use Google, and you can probably find a spring set with a few in it that work.

I can't believe the number of times I've found what I needed on Google, or eBay for that matter.

I e-mailed SW-MOTECH last night to see about what kind of warranty they have.I also explained about the springs braking.
I bought mine in April and took brakets off in June when they fell off.I also use Google to find things, it was one of the first things I did.Rock14 will post the reply from SW-MOTECH.

I downloaded the instructions from TwistedThrottle (which is down due to a database error atm) for the PLX rack from SW-MOTECH, and it has the full parts list with pictures on it. Nothing called a spring washer in the parts list though.

AcrA7.pdf can be gotten from my ftp server, ftp.pball.com , it is in the default folder and is quite small.

Its name is "retaining ring". Not anything else.

Sicherungsring
Retaining Ring

It helps here and other places to use the correct names for things so people can look up what you are talking about or ask someone else about it, lol.

Mine will arrive tomorrow. SW-MOTECH PLX rack, Givi PLX side cases, liners, reflective tape kit.

Yep, putting the reflective kit on them, if I gotta block the rear turn signals from the side, I at least want headlights to bounce back at them some. Besides, bike is all nerdy with the cases on anyway, what harm is a little reflective tape added on? LOL.

Bet I won't bust my quick fasteners. By the way, if you turn the quick fasteners too far, the retaining ring will pop off.

Got my SW-MOTECH PLX racks installed and even with the Muzzy fender replacement I managed to hang the rear bracket just fine. Had to take the piece off and bend it slightly, and drill two holes under the license plate slots.

Very sturdy when installed. My Givi PLX sidecases are nice, and they clear the Brock's CT-DUAL cans just enough to be safe. I suspect the Germans used a composite plastic that is fairly heat resistant anyway.

Just ordered the locks for the racks. That is a must have, because anyone with a Swiss knife could take your side cases, racks and all, just by releasing the quick releases. The locks are cool, they replace the quick release assembly, and when you lock them, the knob you would normal turn to release that mount point just spins and doesn't turn the assembly. Typical good German engineering.

Think I'll wait until next winter for the topcase, since I don't really need it now. At that time I might get a new handlebar with more rise and pullback and just have custom stainless hoses and wiring harnesses made to reach. But for now, the LSL with the superbike (standard) bar is a world of difference from the clipons sitting on Genmar blocks. Very comfortable.

Forgot to say, don't forget you can buy SW-MOTECH parts and accessories at Twisted Throttle. I saw quick release parts there.

Got my SW-MOTECH PLX side racks installed, was pretty easy. Since I have a rear fender eliminator (Muzzy) I had to bend the eliminator a little to get it to where I could drill two holes in it and attach the rear rack mount to it. That worked about great.

The unit, with the PLX side cases attached, is very solid. Its easy to use, and remove and put on, too.

I just ordered the Givi E52 top case with integrated brake lights, which I'll wire to my brake light in front of the modulator I think. Had to get the SW-MOTECH top rack and quick disconnect Givi plate, which accepts the quick-disconnect brakelight unit too.

Keying all three cases the same, too.

So I should be set on luggage, and I can take it all off for daily use. Pretty cool !

I have just returned from a 9 day 4300km trip on the 14. The SW-Motech racks and Givi V35 bags worked great! I would reccomend this set up to anyone who is looking to tour with the 14. The racks held up great even while missing a few of the "retaining spring washers"

Good to hear you enjoyed your trip, Rock !

Don't know why you guys lose retaining rings, I don't have any trouble at all. I also have the sw-motech top case rack with the Givi quick release plate, and the quick releases on it have worked fine too. Love having an extra brake light when I have the E52 top case mounted.

Have a one day ride tomorrow with the gang, then two weeks later, a 3 day trip around the Cheasapeake Bay, and in September, another 2 day ride. So I'll use a little of my storage capacity.

Did your trip bring you into Ca Rock? The background in your pic looks alot like a museum in Susanville.

Good call on the pic boys. That was Susanville. Not to Hi-Jack this thread but the trip did bring me down to California.
We started in Vancouver B.C. down the 101 to SanFran, over to Yosemite, then back north through the mountains of CA,OR,and WA.

I'm envious Rock! Your 14 looks great setup for touring. What saddle do you have on it?

I had the seat done by Rich at Rich's custom seats.
He will build whatever you want. The quality is great and he will fit it just to you.

Rock14, I finally got an answer from SW-MOTECH they wanted a picture of the broken "retaining ring" (which I sent),they contacted Twisted Throttle which e-mailed me for my address and sent me 4 retaining rings (still never gave me an answer about the warranty). If you email Twisted Throttle like I did at first they tell you to call them for the retaining rings,if they are in stock they are $1.00 a piece + shipping .
