14 Went Down Saturday!
01/31/11 1:41 PM

Really stupid too cause it fell over in the driveway after a gust of wind tipped it over. I had left the bike in nuetral with the engine warming up on my sloping driveway. Turned around to close the garage door and I heard a scraping sound as a strong wind gust lifted the bike up enough to take pressure off the kickstand. She took off backwards down the drive and then flipped over on the right side. Got the Yoshimura pipe, lower fairing, mid fairing, upper fairing, mirror, throttle bar end, brake lever and right direction signal cover. I'm guessing at least $2000 dollars at a minimum with labor. I called Geico and they said my comprehensive policy on the bike will cover it so I have to meet with an adjuster at the local Kawi dealer later in the week. This bike was 4 1/2 years old, 15,000 miles and not a single scratch anywhere on it. Literally looked showroom....makes me feel sick.

Do you think they will patch and paint or replace the fairings? I really don't want this bike repainted if I can help it, I'd rather have factory sprayed panels on there. Also the Yoshi, what are they going to have to do there? I don't think you can buy 1/2 a pipe last time I checked.

Will try to get some pics later today and post them.

i have geico they cover up to $2000 for the exhaust. i asked that question before buying the ct duals. the bad thing with sport bikes is when it comes to replacing body parts more times than not they will total the bike.

What scotty said about the totaling of the bike. It's worth mentioning that, if Geico decides to total the bike, you could talk to them after the fact and ask to buy it back for a fraction of the cost after you get your check and decide whether it would be good to replace the plastics or not. If you can forgive the pre-drilled holes and lack of thermal padding, those aftermarket plastics on eBay are only around $500, FYI.

Aw Geez Kruz...sorry man...what a figgin bummer. You sustained a bunch of damage from that tipover.Sorry Bro.I know how ya feel.Geez.You can get full factory bodykits for right around 1500.00 dollars.Might be worth it.That's what I had to do with my first wreck.I know a guy on E-Bay....here's his store name.."velocityking".(without the parenthesis).Tim Ord.Guy's straight as an arrow...packs the parts exactly like factory...brand new.Might wanna give him a heads up on E-Bay Motors.See what he can do for ya.Maybe find ya a pipe as well? He's got nothin but new sportbikes on there(except for some "used" bike parts...not many)Most are straight from brand new bikes. The 14 parts are.Man...sorry again..bummer.if it's any consolation,I dropped mine twice on er side kinda like that.Last time it broke the belly fairing and cracked the ignition cover.I got lucky..the pipe just "barely" tapped the ground...no damage to it.Other than that...everything stayed undamaged...I was REALLY amazed cause she really smacked the garage floor...straight over off the rear stand .I didn't have any damage insurance. So my total repair cost way back in 07 was like right at 2300.00 dollars..new perches, pipes, the whole 9 yards.Saved a bunch reassembling myself.Kawi wanted like 5,000 to do the work, not including parts. His complete body kits include tank and fuel pump as well.

Man you guys are scaring me, I don't want my bike totalled, not from a driveway fall over anyway! This is my baby! I was thinking maybe two thousand bucks with one side of the pipe replaced but geeez you guys are talking big money. I rode the bike yesterday, everything is perfect except she's scratched a bit. I may have to work a deal with Geico, if they won't total my bike, just pay for new parts, I'll do all the work myself and sign a release. I did that with a brand new Ford Explorer Sport once that got totalled when a drunk hit me.

Well...just see what ya can do...maybe he will allow the replacement of the parts.Actually,it'd be cheaper for him anyway to do it like that.

14+slopes in the parking zone....ya....not good...they hate it!

Parked mine last year on a what I thought looked like a flat part of the road.De de de de....reached over to just kinda wipe the dust off the left side exhaust.I'm always wipin my baby down out there..hate bugs an stuff. No problem...I'm kneelin down right there wipin away....all the sudden...ya....she starts movin...wth?Before I could say "crunch"...yep,she was off the stand and droppin like a turd in a well.Jumped up and "tried" to catch er...nah...got er part way saved...but she did hit the ground.Ruined my stock pipe on that side.(maybe it was two years ago). That's when I realized...man...if yer gonna park yer baby on the side of the road...at least put er in gear...okay?Idiot.Felt sooo stupid.Helluva way to be forced to buy a new exhaust...but....

Some people in a van "just happened" to be passin by right then..as I'm liftin her back up."are you okay?" they asked.Geez..."ya...I'm okay"...shi^...my poor bike.I was sooo pissed.(and embarrassed).

Yeah I know....my neighbor just walked behind the corner of his garage a half second before I dropped mine. I was so glad no one saw that but I was in total shock for 2 weeks.

Sounds like you're taking it in stride, Kruz. It sux to see your baby floundering on the ground with engine chugging but you know, they have 2 wheels and most of them prolly end up on the ground at least once. If you are not on when it happens, that is better. You'll get 'er all healed up and have it off your mind in time.

Mine went forward with all my neighbors watching while my finger was on the garage door button. Bike was 6 months old. The wind stood the bike up enough to start her rolling down the drive, then the stand folded in and away she went to the street. I tried to catch it but no luck. Bad seen as I lost it completely and almost put my Helmet through my own front window in front of all who watched. Still hurts when I think of it today, so I know your pain Kruz. Sorry to here. Ouch.
Oh ya, tip over switch worked.

Kruz I bought all new from kawi. Just letting know if you go this route the foam insulation does not come with the panels and stickers are extra as well, so don't forget to order. This might save you some waiting time. Sorry no go news. Cheers

Thanks for all the support guys, hope this never happens to anyone else. I now put the bike in gear and turn the front wheel everytime I get off any of my bikes, even on flat ground. I rode the 14 Sunday, rolled it down to the end of the driveway and parked her on flat ground, started it up and cocked the wheel all the way to the left with a nice tug to see if she was going to move. This was an expensive lesson to learn.

In a low speed tip over like this, probably picked up five miles an hour before she tipped over, is there anything else I should be looking at? That right lower fairing is scarred up pretty good, I'm wondering about the cases underneath? The day it happened, I rode 15 miles and when I returned I noticed oil spray or mist on the left side fairing where the hot air exits the engine compartment. I wiped it off and rode it again on Sunday, no more oil mist. I'm thinking leaking rocker cover gasket here and being tipped over made it worse?

How about frame, steering head area. I find it hard to believe something this minor could cuase a cracked frame but who knows, these things are definitely not designed to crash.

Any other areas I should bring up with the claims adjuster are appreciated from you guys that have experienced this.

That's a royal bummer! Hope you can get it fixed ASAP (without costing you a fortune).

Think falling off of the stand is hard to watch? As your doing the 60mph ragdoll across the ground, catch a glimpse between your feet of your bike doing pirouettes 5 feet in the air.

RE: 14 Went Down Saturday!

I'd leave it alone. Let the insurance do it's thing.

First thing first. A bike to me is a well made antique watch. You drop it, need I say more. Now that is out of the way are your walk away bikes. I buy bent bikes for salvage or more for a parts bin. Say I want to repair or salvage out some energy.

You have an oil leak so that needs to be addressed you smelled who knows what now(?). Why take a chance she catches fire. That is secondary to what the energy had to expel. So, when you rode it for 15 miles, did you look down, see the bars are turned in one direction, the wheel is running in another?

That is the first thing to address because your front end costs in energy release. And if it trickles down to a bent front end, it could dent the steering bearings and there is a locking front end on it's own; known more for a divot. You keep thinking absorption, you now look down at your fork stops at the lower tree, lower crown, lower steering stem, pick.

Notice one fork-stop is perfect, the other took the whack and is more set off out a degree or two. Ding-ding-ding! Where is the parts list, let's begin. See, already you have a bar that may hit or smash your thumb now, when it never did before the crash. There is where you cover your butt, sh/e writes up a set of steering bearings, meaning, you'll need a lower race and do you match a divot with a new race we face to face an old with new and now liability steps in for another 15-100 dollar part that runs in the thousands or millions now?

Bottom line, that front end moves out of center, it was strong enough to tweak it out of plane. Though these frames hold up way better than an old tube frames, we still want to look at the neck to check for cracks or a sheer-off from a welded edge. There, you look at stress cracks showing an aluminum line or sliver, as opposed to the painted frame at the welded bead to frame surface. Right where those two meet, you take a magnifying glass, find any stress at the neck welds.

Other than that, the rest are cosmetics on the ragged edge of a kelly blue book. And that WAS a price without damage. You could be teetering on a total just for replacement parts alone. And no, they are not repainted. Parts are replaced and in new out of package. They would be liable for paint. This way, the part is a factory problem they wash their hands of more liability.

Hubster, thanks for the usual thorough reply, some food for thought there indeed. I know I have tossed a bunch of motocross bikes down the track, off the jumps, into other bikes etc. and just patched 'em up and went on. But then again, those bikes don't go 180+ mph. Hillbilly Tom, you done wadded up your Busa but good, what did you do for inspection? Find any cracks in the frame etc.?

Anytime... You guys know that. BTW, I swung past my long time sponsor (tools loaned), told him his tool would be back shortly. While I was there, he had a 1000cc Honda spattered. I noticed the engine studs and how things have changed to some stout parts inside that engine.

I caught his measuring things up saying how Honda has a better built engine, tolerance wise. Gotta call it like it is.

Haven't even noticed a scratch on the (black) frame, just busted every piece of plastic on it, bent the fairing mount that holds the nose section, and bent the rear peg/muffler hangers and muffler mount tabs. Hay Bus is built like a tank, and I just got lucky, haven't found anything structurally damaged on it. Even the subframe looks perfectly straight.
I set out a while after the off to collect my wits, then pulled the most broken parts off, taped up the rest, and went back out for the last 3 sessions. Took me a couple of those sessions to clear the gremlins out of my head, but the last one went pretty good. 100mph straight as an arrow, nothing funny on the brakes or while on the edge of the tire. Just a lot of wind buffeting because of it being converted to a naked bike.
I'll have a close look at everything before I put all the plastic back on it this spring, but I think it's alright.
