GoPro or other?

I like the looks of the new GoPro Session but the reviews for video quality are poor. What are you guys using and how do you like it??

I bought a Go Pro when they first appeared.. Then I found the Contour, I switched to the Contour for one reason. On/Off switch. The ONLY thing you have to do to start filing is slide the big switch forward. easy to do while riding with gloves on..Very positive action..
Not sure what settings the camera was on in this video but if you go to my Vimeo site you can see a ton.. There are several models but the latest all have instant on and can be bought on Amazon for $180 or so last time I looked

Here is a sample
Vimeo

Sorry cant figure how to embed videos from Vimeo..

Not bad video at all, I could live with that for sure. The switch does sound like a good idea. Its like trying to put your helmet strap on when you forget and put the gloves on first by accident. Almost Impossible!

So for now I am bidding on a couple hero 4 silvers on ebay. We shall see if I can snag one for a decent price. If I have to pay retail I may just do without or go with another brand. The GoPro session looks cool, but I cant get that one unless they improve the video quality. Nobody likes crappy video!

The Contour also has a waterproof holder that my Roam 3 fits in and it does a decent job eliminating sound noise..

Sample of th Contour inside the waterproof box and again. I can reach down and turn it off or on while riding and KNOW that it is on .. or off..

Enclosed Contour

Maybe my opinion is limited due to the fact my bike is loud as f-k but I recall thinking the GoPro had best sound quality. I didn't start to get drowned out until well over 100 mph using just the GoPro mic. The Contour I also used was good though. I'd go with GoPro for the simple fact it's become the industry standard and most likely to have the widest assortment of accessories. Both my cams are a few years old so IDK what developments have taken place. The camera tech has grown by leaps and bounds since they became readily available. The second gen GoPro made the first look terrible.

Rook. Definitely been changes to the cameras.. As far as the Contour one model has blue tooth to phone and gps embeded but like everthing else latest and the greatest costs the most :)
I have not touched a go pro for a few years so have no idea where they are at feature wise today.
Darkarcher...I think what you need to do is go to the sites and familiarize yourself with the models available if you have not all ready.

I was sold on the GoPro session until I watched the side by side between that and the silver. Night and day better on the silver. Plus it looks like if I try long enough I might be able to get a silver for just a bit more than the session retail. That ReplayXD looks like a nice rig as well. Nice videos guys

I used both on my last track day but it was about 3 years ago. Here's the vid with both edited together. Contour without plastic case is lower, upper is GoPro with non-waterproof back. They were really very comparable. Sound was good with both.

GoPro Session all the way. especially since they dropped price to like $199

small and compact

one button operation - turn on and start recording / stop recording and turn off

water proof to like 20'

dual mic's, pics the mic automatically with less wind noise

WiFi control/view/transfers from smartphone

I've been shooting everything at 1080p 60fps and the video is great.

Here's some vids shot with the session, road, track and a "how to" video, make sure to crank
up to HD 1080

Youtube video Channel

mounted on zx10

mounted on zx14

Hi there,

I'm on the road with my Garmin Virb Elite.
It also has a big slider, it has included GPS, it has a display and as I think a good video quality.
And what I'm really confident with is the "Torpedo" body layout.

Mopped, wherever you live it is beautiful man. I like the scenery here in southern ohio but DAMN you got it good!

Question, for the camera's with GPS, what is the advantage there? Route map and anything else? I would love to be able to edit together a video with a little speedo in the corner. What would it take to achieve that? Anybody done it?

If you have editing software, I don't see any problem with any camera. They all get loaded to the computer as the same kind of file and you can mix footage from the Contour and the GoPro or whatever cams you have. I think I even used the GoPro sound with Contour video at times. I used iMovie. The Contour required that their software be downloaded to retrieve the file from the camera, I believe. GoPro went straight to iMovie.

I use to run the Contour on the side of my helmet, then my tank facing forward. Now I have it mounted on a small bracket off of the center stand grab handle mount point. It looks rear with a nice view of the rear wheel, tail and pipe. Great view of anyone fallowing too. It isn't hard to reach the switch but it doesn't stay powered for very long and it is almost impossible to press the little power button on the back of it while riding to get it powered again. Mine is one of the earlier ones before GoPro got so big. I run a White edition GoPro on various forward facing mounts. Still trying to find that perfect angle. I like the video quality of both.

Ordered the virb elite like mopped on amazon. On sale for $179. Couldnt pass on the gps info on the video! Thanks guys. One other thing i learned about the virb is that it comes with a go pro mount adapter. So you have options

Congrats :)

Editing the video is pretty easy with the Garmin Virb Edit software.
Once it was a holy crap, but in time it really got better and has now a really whole lot of possibilities to manage, edit, export and share the videos.
I like it.

The go pro mount is following:

You have just like with the go pro plenty of ways to mount the cam:

I think this mount looks really versatile for mounting to the 14. I can think of about 4 places this could be used.

Well Guys, I made my first video with the Virb. I must say, glad I did not spend the extra dough on the GoPro. It was simply not needed. Put the camera on 720P and 60FPS with image stability turned on. It will do much better but I just thought I would try this setting first. Nothing exciting to see in this video except some nice little backroads on my way to work. Just wanted you to see what could be achieved with this camera first time out with what comes in the box. Dont forget to bump it up to 720P for better quality.

@Paulbe - that is supposed to be G-forces. Would be a little more cool if it were applied to a video of a drag strip run I think. I just wanted to see what it would do.

@Chrly - Sound is completely stock. It could be that $1800 full titanium exhaust you are hearing lol. Makes anything sound good.
