Mirror Extenders.
11/19/14 12:22 PM

These look like they could be a good idea.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mirror-Extenders-Spacers-2006-2013-Kawasaki-Ninja-ZX14-ZZR1400-ZX-14-ZZR-1400-/261668298607?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item3ceca55f6f

Not sure of the quality but the price including international shipping seems fair.
I might try them out.

Wouldn't hurt to try them.
I try and push spot mirrors on people. No more wondering if something is there or not. A must have for me.
You can see them in this pic.

Get some!

My issue is not the length of the mirror arm but the size of mirror. To me the OEM mirror is pretty small. Busa has a larger mirror I believe. Has anyone tried a larger face mirrors on ZX?

Interesting because I find the sizes excellent with minimal vibration like some other bikes I've ridden.
But my shoulders/arms/elbows catch the viewing areas of the inside portions of the mirrors on both sides when checking behind, so these extenders really appeal to me as a potential resolution.

We'll see...

That's why I put a spot mirror there. I can't use that part of the mirror anyway.
Everything I pilot has spot mirrors. Well, besides the lawn tractor.

I'm sure rear vision is extended outwards, up and down with spot mirrors, but they can't see behind your arm if its blocking some of your rearward view.
Only assuming as I have never used these...

RE: Mirror Extenders.

Just installed these and there is good and bad.

The actual quality of the material used on components is very good.
However what should have been a 30 minute installation turned into an hour and a half as modifications were required which is always frustrating when all should fit first time.
There is a larger diameter hole drilled most of the way through the black plastic extender pieces and a smaller diameter hole for the rest of the way. When I tried to use these extenders in this format there was a small gap between mirror base and extender that I could not resolve. I ended up having to drill out the extender pieces to the larger diameter to correct this.
Also the supplied extension threaded sections were not long enough when mounting all to the bike so it was difficult to get the bolt to grip on the limited thread available.
But with persistence it was done.
But why not provide the correct length first time?

The end result is very good and there is more view behind and less elbow.
Is it an improvement? Definitely. Is it really that substantial? I'm not so sure.
Anyway, I'll take it for a ride and that will tell me whether the exercise was worth the cost and effort.

Lastly, there was mention of spot mirrors earlier in this thread.
I think the combination of these and this extension setup would really provide a marked difference.

If you haven't already, try a set of bar end mirrors. They're cheap and you won't see anything but the road behind you. I adjust mine so i can see just corner of the tail at the lower inside edge of the mirror. That way I have a better idea of how close cars are to me. Only disadvantage is I have to shift my gauge a bit to see the mirror. I think they're a little less safe. I depend more on turning your head to look behind me in tight spots anyway.

Jimmymac, are those any particular spot mirrors that you have? I'd rather find some the right size and shape right off without having to trial-and-error it.

They are whatever I can find at the auto parts store or wallyworld. They are fairly small, and shaped like a door stop, wedge. I swear, I traded in my 08 Zx14 on a '10 Connie, and put it back to stock. The ride to the dealer was miserable without my spot mirrors. Get some first thing.
I don't have time to make stuff up. These things change everything.

Just went on a ride so i could test these out properly.

Do they make a difference?
Yes.
Do they make a substantial difference?
Not to the level I would have liked.
Are they worth the expense and effort to install?
Jury is out on that one.
Would I recommend them to others on this site?
Probably not from my experience.

Perhaps a better option is to start with jimmymac's suggestion of spot mirrors (though I have never tried these) and take it from there.
These extenders could then be another option if you are still struggling for view behind.

But now that I have already gone to the effort of purchasing and installing these I will leave them in place on my bike.

Please note these are just my opinions and someone else here may find these are great!

But for me, a tad disappointing...

Too bad...

I really wanted this idea of extenders to work (for you, and for me).

I run the "wedge" mirrors on everything else I ride, but not my 14R. I also fit them to all my cars. I never buy the round ones, they're a waste of time and money. I get them at Pep Boys, and Autozone, etc. (They used to be a buck, now more like 2.50 ea).

I note the wedges are in the "good" location in the picture above. The outboard mirror "real estate" is much more valuable for rear view in all application. The wedge mirrors belong inboard. I also find that they should be "level", looking at the road bed. That is, when viewing the image in the mirror, level it... It's not typically the "level across the entire mirror position" when placing it with the glue pad, but usually it's correct position is "not level" to the mirror, but level to the view behind. I hope that makes sense...

These wedge mirror views have "fooled" me in both day and night viewing, but I never use them at nite, they fool me too much (as judged by what I see when I look over the shoulder, too, always).

Lastly, there's NO SUBSITUTE for a look over the shoulder. None.

"Lastly, there's NO SUBSITUTE for a look over the shoulder. None."...agreed.Those wedge ones though...they look kinda cool...I can't ride NOT looking back for lane changes and such....I've tried.Just using the mirrors...nope....too uncomfortable for me.Things happen VERY FAST...best to look back IMO.Only drawback to 'looking back' is how fast someone ahead can hit their brakes...not good.I don't tailgate. That's one reason why.But I've ridden with a few guys that ride right on a cage's azz...I cringe everytime they ride that way.I've had people hit their brakes ahead when I was going for a pass....risky...VERY...to be right on em.Some of these guys have ridden for quite a few miles not more than say...10 feet behind a cage at 80 mph....I honestly can't understand WHY they're doing that....I get out and around any cage that's going 70 mph....get free and clear....then back to normal cruise speed.

RE: Mirror Extenders.

I had another look at why I decided to not use the "wedge" mirrors on just the 14R. (I use'em on everything else I drive or ride).

My reason is, they take up too much mirror primary real estate, even mounted as close "to the center line" as possible. (ie: mounted inboard as far as they'll stick).

The edge of the "wedge" intrudes into the primary mirror space where I'm trying to see behind me, just past my elbows.

They're too big (the wedges, not my elbows :)

So, I guess I really wanted these extensions to work out. Oh well, not this implementation, mebbe some other will get it right.

I'll add that I understand why Papa Kaw made the stalks as short / long as they are. We cant have those lane-splitters taking off their mirrors in tight surroundings.

Yannih:

In my opinion, you should think about removing these extenders.

You mention they do not provide much "bite" into the OEM screw-hole mount.

Think about the vibrations working them loose (heavy part at the end of a relatively long moment-arm). Think about the cost of a new mirror when it comes off and you have to buy a replacement...

Try them, Guys. Try them for a couple of weeks.
Mount them as close to the inside of the mirror as possible. Of course it's Winter, so riding often isn't possible for most of us. Once you try it, you'll never ride without them again.
I don't want to be looking over my shoulder when a dumbass slams on their brakes because they were distracted by their phone. It costs 5 bucks to try. You can't lose.

If you use them on your cage, take them off for a day. You'll get it then.

I would have to go with Rook's suggestion, bar end mirrors. I had the bar ends on other bikes and they worked just fine.
