LED Under Bike Lights
04/25/09 8:39 PM

Has anyone put the colored LED Under Bike Lights on their 14 ?
I just picked up a set for my MONSTER 14 in Green and was wondering if anyone else had put LED's on their 14 and where.

LED GLOW

The green lights should be a real attention getter at the local Bike nights..........

I've been thinking of doing this as well, but am hesitant due to my past experience with trying to wire up my Busa. These motors are BIG & there's not a lot of room b/t them & the fairing walls. I literally kept MELTING the LED wires on my Busa. In looking at the ZX, it appears as though there is even less room in some places to run the wires where they'd be out of harm's way.

I'd love to see it done (with schematics on wire routing). But I think you'd almost have to forego any LED lighting near/around the side fairing openings and just settle for under the nose, under the engine/body & on the undertail. Keep us posted & take some pics! I'd really like to see how it comes out.

I figured under the nose, under the tail, and maybe the swing arm.

Since the ZX is a Monster Edition, I went with the green LEDs.
Monday I'm wiring up the Alarm, Radar detector, and Battery tender leads. So while I've got it apart, I'll check out possible mounting locations.

I have LEDs on mine.. but they aren't working right. I think the bike gets way too hot for them. In the parking lot with the bike cool, I usually don't have a problem. But on the road, I can only keep them lit for about 30 minutes before they just shut off...

Here's a pic of it lit up though..

I have a similar set up on my 2012 zx14 but with multi color lights. Don't have an issue with mine. Maybe you have a bad led or loose wire some where?

Doesn't having those lights on get in the way of removing fairings and such? Or do you just not put them on the side fairings?

I'm sure they just run along the framework in and attach with adhesive backed plates in strategic locations. That's how my busa's were done anyway. The fairings came right off just like they would without the lights.

the only lights that are attched to the body work is on the nose and down the inside of the front wheel fairing neither of which is ever pulled off and if they would need to come off i just unplug them. the rest are attached to the frame, rear brake caliper, and the plastic peice above the engine compartment. Oh and top rear of the speedo the control unit is tucked away in the battery compartment

Just installed these on my bike, and I like the look. I went with the 6 strip kit from LED glow. It's a good kit, and works well as of day 2.

I ran lights above rear tire, under the nose, and on the underside of the seat mounting bracket. I like the look under the seat a lot. Though, the middle faring seems too dark, and is in need of some lighting. I also think I would just mount the strip to the actual faring for that part, and rig a disconnect that I would run right alongside the turn signal disconnect. All in all a great look I think, though looking at it, I would go with an 8 or maybe even a 10 strip kit.

The wiring was pretty simple. The rear 4 strips are all just under the seat compartment and run straight up to the control unit which I placed in an open area just in front of the toolbox. For the nose strips I just followed the existing wiring harness along the left side all the way to the rear of the bike. I spliced my power into the same circuit that controls running and tail lights. I'm still a little on the fence about this decision, since now the those lights need to be on to turn on the underglow lights. But I opted for this to ensure that I won't leave them on and kill my battery. There's a fair chance I'll wire them directly to the battery positive at some point so I can show them without the other lights being on.

They look very cool, just remember don't ride off with them on, or the ticket will eat a month's gas money.

Have never heard of anyone here in my part of Texas getting ticketed for under glow lighting being on while riding. I see them on bikes and cars all the time here so it never occurred to me that it may be illegal. I'll ask around to be sure because I was thinking about doing this. Yet another reason to move to Texas. LED lighting, guns, loud exhaust, and verbal warnings when stopped for speeding. LOL!! Y'all should move down here.

I have replaced my running lights and turn signals with blue LEDs. The reduced power pulled by the LED signals make them flash twice as frequently as they did with incandescents, but I rather like it, so I'm not adding resistors. Anything that makes you more conspicuous is good in my book.

Now THAT'S what I call conspicuity!

If I could just replace the flasher relay with a different one, I might go that route, but so far, I've only seen the resistors you have to cut and splice into the individual wires.

@ danno , I replaced all my bulbs with LEDs and replaced the flasher with this one click here for LED flasher . No inline resistors. I had to enlarge the mounting hole in the flasher to mount it in the stock location but no big deal.

Thanks for the tip, Dericrey. I think I bought some of my LEDs from them. I know for sure I was on their site looking at bulbs. In any case, does it plug directly into the stock connector or do you need to splice the wires?
