Quickshifters
03/05/12 11:20 PM

I've wondered about this deal for quite a while now cause I do a lot of clutchless shifting out there going through the gears. But my question is this...to anyone...the rapid(immediate with a quickshifter)change in rpms on our engines...our big inline fours...that's a lot of mass and weight changing speed that quickly.Does anyone think it could possibly be harmful over the long run shifting like that?I know the race guys...ya..they change engines and stuff kinda often. But for a long termer street bike...you think it's actually safe on the pistons and stuff to be changing that quickly?IDK....I'm not so sure.I mean..ya..it's excellent to be able to hammer her wide open and shift up(or down)...but......I'm a bit skeptical about how much that's actually wearing on parts in there. For a street application....I don't really see a niche for it?????And I haven't researched to find out how many bikes may or may not be holding up to shifting like that.Probably, few would say"man...forget it for a street bike...I trashed mine using XYZ shifter"...know what I mean?

Those race guys...sponsored drag guys or whatever...shit..they throw a rod or bust a piston or somethin...all in a day's work...they don't pay for it.And I'm doubtin seriously if a guy gets a sponsor that he's gonna say.."ya...this deal here...DON'T get this thing guys".I've shifted 'plenty' of times without a clutch...downshifts at higher rpms.On my new 14R as well.I think I'm gonna stop doing that however. That slipper is there for a reason. The change in rpms that fast...I can't imagine it's okay for the engine....not over the long haul.Someone correct me here...I'd like to think it's okay and keep shifting like that...but.....

I think the amount of time chopping the throttle(even if it's just a half a second(by hand))and shifting is probably enough to give the internals a slight buffer without being completely slammed into a different inertia situation. Those quickshifters...they don't have that little margin in there.Do they?

As fast as you think you can shift; As fast as you think you can lift; As fast as all that is happening, the bike cuts off as soon as you touch the shifter = No lift. This a racing kind of move. It eliminates lift time. Keep it pinned and shift as fast as you can.

No, you do not need or use this for the street. Unless you are hard core, we head to some remote road to exchange titles or cash, or rip up the roads every time out... Save your money.

The gears will actually change faster. I don't think you can move your ankle and / or wrist and/or hand in 60 millisecods. Plenty fast enough to realize all the bike's potential but if you are racing where .03 seconds matters,
the shifter will give you the edge over somebody without IF you are both neck and neck and IF your bikes and riding skills are equal.

This quickshifter is just a cool toy to play racer with. If you don't feel much like moving, I guess it has some real world value. You can sit back with your Throttlemeister on and both hands off the grips and shift every now and then w/o moving! LOL

NO, I do not believe the ignition cut quickshifters will cause any more strain on the internals than a good, sound clutchless, closed throttle upshift. Ignition cut = no pull from the engine. I guess now that you mention it, enguaging the clutch is always goin to be least stress on the bike because it cuts the load on the engine and all other drag associated with engine and driveline engauged. Clutch in you are just coasting/0 power/0 engine decel. I guess I will be clutching it most of the time even with the shifter on there.

On my old FJ1100 I used to shift cruising around without the clutch.... After a while the bike would pop out of 2nd gear. I have had quickshifters on my last 3 bikes and never had any tranny problems. The HM unit currently on my 2012 14R is the best one I have ever used...Period. Yes it was expensive but I firmly believe you get what you pay for. A mechanic that roadraces tells me the quickshifters are no wear on the clutch.... Makes sense to me since your not using the clutch when quickshifting.

I bought the Plus unit because it is completely independent and self contained.

Jumping out of 2nd gear is caused by not getting a complete shift from 1st to second. Then, when you slam the throttle back on the gears slip and Shazzam! You just bent the shift fork. Now you will have the slipping out of 2nd gear problem forever.

OUCH

I THOUGHT my bike missed a shift...what it REALLY did was spin the rear tire (KTRC was a tad slow in responding methinks )
