ECU Reflash
01/16/12 11:13 AM

Guys has anyone here done an ECU reflash? I was thinking about it so I could take off my PC,bonnvile pro, ATRE and muzzy advancer. Then have him raise the limiter by 200 RPM's Not that I need that but if he's in there....

Yes... Thread is HERE

Mine is the ECUnleashed flash...

Blue line is before flash and red line is after flash:

DogozX So if I have all the add on you think I shouldn't bother? I have the PCV, custom tune, muzzy timing wheel,ATRE Bonnie pro, muzzy stacks, and flies out. I wasn't looking for more power but getting rid of all the ad ons. But also rising up the rpm limiter and being able to get more mid range power by putting the flies back in.

Well, I still did not get rid of any of my piggys...

Still use a Speedohealer for accurate speedometer... and top speed recall.
Still need the PC5 for fuel trims... but Guhls flash file may be better than the ECUnleashed for fuel mapping (probably same though)

With your current setup, IMO, just have Guhl bump up the revlimiter... Pretty sure they charge less for that than a "full" reflash... And really all you would gain.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing but I may just pass because once I get that high she's out of her curve anyways....

Had mine bumped up 200rpm's and still holds power through redline... best part is I can be late and not bounce the limiter... Which I had a habit of before the flash... My tuner wanted to bump it 500rpm's, but I knew better. lol

I actually spoke with them today and unfortunately I did not hear everything I wanted to. They are still working on it and " the 14R computer does not seem nearly as HP restrictive as the ZX10 was". So in other words I am not nearly as optimistic as I was hoping for huge power gains.... But time will tell, they were doing more Dyno pulls today...
LOL, I may need a new rear tire soon, gave them bike with 700 miles on it, wonder how many it will come back with.

Guhl Motors (Don Guhl) is about 100 miles from me, so once the weather warms up, I'm riding there one Saturday morning, and getting it done.

$375 for the re-flash, plus for $200 extra he will dyno tune and I'll be able to unplug the power commander.

Flash will a) open flies early and completely, b) install a better ignition table, c) remove the top speed limit, d) move the rev limit up a bit.

Plus, after the dyno tuning, the flash will contain a new A/F table.

Priv let me know how it goes sounds like a good deal, cheaper than a PCV w/ autotune and no add ons. I hate add ons.

I can already tell you. COG friends have had it done on C14s. The COG tech guy even posted a video of an instrumented run using the LED screen you can buy to hooking into a piggy 5 to show secondary butterfly opening percent.

The Guhl re-flash opens the secondaries almost immediately, and keeps them open until you roll off the throttle. When it does start to let them close down, it does so more gradually than the stock ECU does. So its almost as good as taking the flies out, but for a 2012 its better because the traction control can still use the flies to implement corrections.

He also puts a less conservative ignition table in. For the C14s, its already figured out, and Don says it is for pre-2012 ZX14s as well. But if you get him to dyno, he will do the ignition tables custom based on dyno results.

The speed limiter is off, and the rev limiter is increased a few percent, nothing unsafe.

Remember, stock the ZX14 (all) are delivered mapped rich in both A/F and ignition tables. For safety, and so the engine is not delivering full horsepower. Possibly to avoid paying more import fees due to horsepower ratings. Which is why you can put slip-ons on them and not even remotely need a piggy.

So I already know what I'll get. Don Guhl was one of the first, he's been doing this for over 5 years. He's been in business a lot longer. The way he worked with the COG tech guy indicates he a standup good guy as well.

Well I wound up going with a flash from dynotronics from TX. Joe was a great guy on the phone and I talked to him and went over a bunch of things. I'm heading up to comp c&c in ct for some head work and degree the cams and 47 mm throttle bodies. Going to leave in my pc5 and then custom tune her. I'm heading to Maine for the top speed event in July. I'm having Joe bump up the RPM limit and timing along with the fuel tables. I'll have it fine tuned after the head work and see where I'm at!!!

Guys,

I had Joe McClughan at Dynotronics with help from Christian Piasini do my reflash and the results are nothing short of phenomenal, in my opinion. WAY better than pulling the secondaries and trying to work around the ECU with a bunch of piggy back devices. See the dyno chart below showing the stock set up (the darkest lines), after the first reflash (the medium lines) and after the second reflash (the lightest colored lines). Note that between 3000 and 6000 rpm, we gained 18 ft/lbs of torque and 15 hp. Above 8000 RPM, we have a solid 5+ hp gain all the way to redline. We have a couple of lean bumps at 4000 and 8000 that Joe and Christian are working on fixing, but the overall power output increase is still excellent.

Riding it today for the first time since the second reflash was quite an experience. Power delivery is now WAY smoother than it was before. The fuel cut has also been eliminated, resulting in much smoother on-off-on throttle tranistions. I can't even begin to tell you how pleased I am with the way the thing rides now. My dyno shop also did a top speed run to confirm that the factory speed limiter is taking a dirt nap. I may or may not have the chance to test that out for myself this season, but we'll see.

Right now, my 2007 ZX14 setup is mostly stock with just a K&N air filter and a set of Delkevic slip ons. A full Yosh or Akro exhaust is next on the list, but after I have a chance to put a few miles on it this season to get use to it the way it is first.

Enjoy!!!

Yeah I had mine done by Joe and was very happy also. I would say the on off throttle is way better for sure! I can get back to the gas without fearing the back end flying out because of how hard it hit when getting back on the gas.....I still run the PC5 just too fine tune her.....

I had a chance to ride mine quite a bit this weekend on a group ride up in Wisconsin on some pretty twisty two lanes. The ride leader and all of the other riders are experienced track day junkies. My bike and I have never seen a track day, but plenty of public twisties in my 35 years of riding. The results of Joe's reflash supported by the great dyno work by Kurt Kapusinski and the folks at Komet Motorsports, were simply amazing. VERY smooth power delivery and plenty of it. I kept pace with the ride leader without any difficulty whatsoever, due primarily to the huge power advantange I had over him after the reflash. I simply can't say enough how greatful I am to Joe, Christian and Kurt for all of their hard work on my bike. And for those of you in the Chicago area, be sure to give Kurt at Komet Motorsports a call if you ever want help getting your bike in tippy top shape. Kurt and the rest of the folks at Komet do phenomenal work at a reasonable price. If you're in the area, be sure to look them up. Komet Motorsports
