Made my own tank pad
03/24/11 8:21 PM

Im going down to Memphis tomorrow for a weekend of good twisty riding(50% chance of rain right now) but anyway, I couldn't really make up my mind on one that I thought was big enough, and went with the lines of the tank.

I had some scrap 3M Ni-Doc carbon fiber vinyl laying around, so I made my own in about 5 minutes. Just layed down a piece of paper, drew on it how I thought it would flow nicely, cut it out, then transferred it over to the back side of the vinyl, cut it out, and slapped it on the tank.

Heres the results.

2007 Plasma Blue ZX-14.
New build, Fresh re-plated block, Velocity Racing Turbo kit, JE Turbo pistons, P&P Head, and a whole lot more. Current on 8.5psi.

2013 White ZX-14R, Full Hindle exhaust, Puig DB screen, HIDs, drop pegs, bar risers, and so on, setting it up for touring.

Job well done Kolk1, looks good, does the job and must have been relatively inexpensive.

I bought a roll of the vinyl about a year ago for random projects, and this was just a left over piece of scrap. I originally bought the 4sqft roll they sell for $30. Ive done light switches for the garage, case for my iphone, and other random bike parts. So I cant really say I spent anything on it at all. lol If you were buying a piece just big enough to do this size tank pad, you would pretty much have to buy the 1sqft roll for $15. At that point id say its probably not worth it. This vinyl is probably only 1/16 of an inch thick at most. The cover I made for my phone is holding up just fine, and its a year old, and see's pretty heavy use. My concern about the tank pad is the top corners that come to a small point. I dont thing it will take much for them to catch on my jacket and start peeling it up, so I might redo the top corners some how and make them rounded.
