Smoked LED Signals
03/25/11 7:26 AM

I like to upgrade my vehicles with Leds where ever I can because I'm an LED nut! So it would only make sense to LED-ify my 14's signals. However, I don't care for the current choices in LED retro fit bulbs because they just look like regular bulbs for the most part and what I like to achieve is filling the whole lens surface with light.

This time I used surface mount leds [which I had never used before] because I wanted something that I could epoxy them all over the reflector and still have a slim enough design to fit under the lens. I'm pretty satified with the results but I'm hoping for a bit brighter when they're on the bike's electrical system (usually 13V, I have 12V or less hooked up in the pics). Next time I might try to pack more in.

I installed them in my new smoked front signals and my stock rears which I have painted to look like smoked lenses.

Cool idea. Low cost and works as good or better than aftermarket. No probs with fitment which is the worst PITA in some aftermarket flashers.

Low cost is relative to what kind and how many leds you want to install. The ones I used were $.60/pc and I had nine in each signal plus resistors and wire maybe $20+/-. The front turns I did for my car cost about $60 just in LEDs. It had a more spacious place to work though. I also encased them in crystal clear epoxy which is nice and waterproof but can get heavy...they light up houses out in the country when I'm cruising down the street tho lol

Very cool idea, and good work too.

Might list the parts involved, and how you hooked the LEDs up to the resistors, so we have a How To to go with the pictures.

I know I'd appreciate it. :)
