SECOND BIKE – REASONABLE OR WRECKLESS SPENDING?
03/18/13 10:55 AM

I am thinking of getting a S1000RR (since I sold my new motocross bike) to add to the 14R so I’d then have two street bikes….both top machines at what they do.

But I am also the kind guy who will more than likely, want to get the latest and greatest version in a couple three years once they update the 14R.

Do you two (or more) bike owners sometimes question how reasonable a second (or third) bike purchase was after you’ve got it home and realize there are only so many available hours to ride one, much less, two?

I am not made of money, and while my 14R is paid for, I’d have to finance the BMW with a down payment of $5,000. My car is paid off, too, so……

I am looking for either some reasoning to refrain from giving in to the urge and wait it out, or justification to go ahead and do it…….LOL

I would get a 2012, ZX-10. Lighter and closer to a 600 in handling. or just get a 600. A liter bike will be too similar. If you have two bikes make them fit two different purposes.

On the subject of buying a second bike, I would say reasonable, and my wife would say wreckless spending. I think the key is that you get bikes that are ment for 2 different purposes. I have a sport bike, and a cruiser. My (so called) sport bike is a zzr1200, and I still would like to have a 600cc true sport bike to turn up the heat in the corners. As for me, I know the time that I would actually do that is not worth the expence or headace. I think that if I had a zx14r, and wanted a sportbike to hit the curves a little more agressively, I would choose a 600cc sport bike, or something in that category. The only way I would consider a liter bike is if I was a serious rider and could truly put it through the paces. For most people, a 600cc corner carver is fine. JMHO

At one time I had 9 bikes, and that was barely enough. I need at least one for every conceivable occasion...

It makes reasoning to have two bikes with differing uses/qualities.

I found the RR to be very agile and light weight (compared to the 14R), but yes, a 600cc would be like a toy compared to the 14R, as far as weight and tossing it around corners.

Call me shallow (I admit), but I was thrilled by having one of each of the two best bikes in different factions. The RR and 14R. Both different uses, and both the highest level at what they are made to do.

But you guys make good sense with going down to a 600cc, yes. I guess my second childhood mentality is steering me in a more extreme direction, though. LOL

Got approved on the financing but I am still thinking over the reasoning for me, personally, paying that much $$$$ for a second bike. As the time I have to ride the 14R is limited to here and there as it is, and then to get a second luxury item............. As I said, I think I'd sleep in the garage, right between the two of em in sleeping bag.

I do know, however, that after the test ride, that if I got anything other than the RR, I'd regret it. So either take the plunge on the RR and make the payments, or be content with the one I have, which I own, lock stock and barrell, in all its paid off glory.

These level of exciting bikes seem to bring out the indecisive teenager in me. LOL

Yo my wife thinks the first bike was reckless spending. But I agree with Romans, if you will regret it, just dive in and do it man. YOLO, life is too short!

I have been on the fence for some time now over getting a BMW or not, and I have finally landed a better paying job where I can now afford the extra payment......................

but at this point, it looks as if I'll stay with just the Kawasaki I've got, enjoy it, and when I am ready to trade, then get a BMW. I can only ride one at a time, and there are only so many hours in the day to enjoy a bike with all the other things that demand our time.

Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to have the BMW as second bike, but I have realized it'd be a bit impractical, at least for me. Overkill. And the little woman is wanting me to get back on the house projects I've had to put off since I started back to school.....build her a kitchen island, redoing the bathrooms, lay a new patio, to name a few.

But for those of you who do have two bikes, or more ( and especially those of you who have both the BMW and the 14R), I'll live vicariously through you!

But I'll one day here in the next couple three years, I'll have my mitts on a BMW S1000RR, or elseGives me something to look forward to.

But for now, I am still amazed by the 14R and love the hell out of it. Even if I can't wind around the corners the way these other liter bikes I ride with can. Oh well, they can't hit 80 mph in what seems like a matter of a few feet, either.

There is nothing like the 14. Even the rr was struggling with the modded R. That loan would sink and more so as soon as you rode the bike out the drive. It's going to sit like you said. The maintenance, the care and feeding over the winter time. A few winks and you think the power wars have ever stopped?

They will not sell me another bike if it's not faster than the R is today. With Suzuki up its own sleeve, it's been waiting to bring out a new line from top to bottom. Before you know it, both bikes [R/rr] would turn obsolete in a few years. So the beauty is to pay yourselfirst. This is a new [???] in a crate waiting for you. Beats the R like the rr is slowly being beat by a heavier bike no less... sans the cc increase.

Like now. I'm selling bike(s) so as to havE CASH WAITING for the next crop in a few years. It's been a fast 8 years and 'ol 1352/1441/???? is the same ol'shit... Cash Waiting for "The World's Fastest"

Where is me arm popper on the ultra grunt?

I should touch the throttle and look like dis in a couple of yards (cough to the right and pop that one out in) 60ft or less.

Bring on Rushour!

LOL

Good post and thanks for the insightful input.

I originally traded my 2012, sharp as HELL orange Z1000 for the zx14r, mainly due to it being the *top bike you can buy*. Superficial, and fickle.............guilty.

But once I started riding it, I realized just how smooth and comfortable this hellaciously fast bike was. I am certianly content with the 14R assuming I am staying with just one bike. And it looks like I am.

But as you said, who knows what'll be available in two or three years. Maybe by the time the 2015 model line comes out, BMW and Kawi will both be pushed aside by the newest Hayabusa.....Revitalized styling, rides smooth as silk, and now creating 220 hp, STOCK! WHo knows.............??

Here is my admission.......I may be cut from a different piece of cloth than some of you, but I am guilty of being the kinda rider who wants the *latest and greatest* kind of bike.

But if I stay with just one bike, I'll only have one bike that is depreciating. That kinda puts it in a more reasonable light......and I'll then be more able to afford whatever *latest and greatest* bike is avaiable in a couple three years. Keeping one, and enojoying that, then moving on to something else makes much more sense that two at the same time. At least for me and my schedule, anyway.

Thanks again....

AHHH, just get it. The 14R for 0-150mph and the 1000RR for 150mph- to top.

I just read the comments a guy that has both made and he said 0-150mph the 14R jumps ahead but after that the Beemer pulls away. He also has a Busa, and said both the 14R and the RR eats it.

Second bike - don't think about it too long or you'll talk yourself out of it! Just do it!

"BMW and Kawi will both be pushed aside by the newest Hayabusa....."

Bet on it.

Rumor mill has it, the 2014 Busa will be the same bike, but with standard ABS...and NEW colors...Again...

An all new Busa would be nice, but it's kinda like waiting for the Iraqi Dinar to RV... maybe for 2015?

Had two bikes in 2010. An F4i for commuting to work and a dual sport for construction site mischeif. Now with the 14 I need a mischeif bike for jumps and thrashing more than ever!

I agree, the only reason to wait would be the evolution of BMW 1000 or 1600 (6 cylinder), or new Honda v4 or possib a new Busa.

Might be worth the wait!

Yes, I'd hate to fork over $16,000 only to see my beloved new RR become old hat once the 2014 model comes out, revised and better looking.

DOH!

I see the possible Honda's HP4 mentioned more than once in these threads.

What are the speculations on that?
