RE: fender mod

Good stuff! Any intel on the following is always desired....I need a bracket fix to swap out my 14 front fender for a ZX10 to help with cooling and lower that oversized look. My 06 ZX14 always runs 3-4 , and if in slow traffic, 5 bars hot! Got it used and its got 6700 miles on it, I've heard on this forum that a properly broken in 14 will "cool off" after XXXX (?) miles, makes me wonder what kind of break in she had.... I Removed the flies this week and took a snap shot on the dyno, running lean and we expected that with no flies and thus even hotter now I assume (gotta re-map it for no flies).

Any comments from the group, my plan to lower temps and my mod list:

1. Ordered a alien head full exhaust, were asking the company if they ceramic coat their header/pipes at all. I'm hearing from these forums that coating will reduce some of the heat...

2. Trying to find brackets to swap out the boat anchor front fender for a 2007 ZX10, this one makes sense, that stocker looks like a nice air damn for the radiator...Dubious from the other forum is retired in the game of bracket provider...

3. My fans assembly already had the aluminum blades from the previous owner, the fan and or blades are making a RACKET when it turns on, don't detect a blade rub, sounds like a cheap motel A/C unit or broken refrigerator. I'm assuming this is a fan motor that's giving up the ghost, but will inspect when we tear down the front end for the pipe install and get a used one.

Any intel or tips are always appreciated,

Drew

Sounds like you already got it figured out. Our bikes running @ 3-4 bars on the temp guage is normal. The 10r fender mod will drop that down to 2-3 bars when the bike is moving. It will, however, make the front end feel lighter at high speeds. I had a 10r fender on my last 14 mounted up with Lyle's (dubious') brackets. Worth every penny in time saved with the install, but if he is no longer making them a guy with basic fab skills and some flat bar stock could make his own in an hour or two.
Had a Muzzy (aluminum) fan on my last 14 too. Didn't cool down the bike any better than the stock (plastic) fan and was very noisy. Might wanna check that your's is properly mounted onto the fan motor. It should have a green, paper type gasket behind the fan blades to allow proper clearance between the blades and fan motor. Also, I did have to trim the black plastic shroud, above the radiator, to clear the fan properly. It didn't rub bad before I trimmed it, but it did just enoungh to make a little noise.
One more thing... Engine Ice.

Seems we're a lil short on pics in this thread.

I just picked up this unpainted YanaShiki ZX-14 fender from VooDoo industries. $65 + $20 shipping. That's about as good a deal as you will find anywhere including Ebay right now.

I was gonna buy a cheap used/cosmetically damaged but otherwise perfectly functioning ZX-14 fender and chop it down. They are asking $60 + shipping for scarped only/no cracks ZX-14 fenders on Ebay. Lots of work to cut and grind + sand and paint nicely.

This baby is under a pound. I have not weighed the OEM fender yet. Since I'm going with a new look, think I will let go of the stripes on the fender. I'll paint the top of the YanaShiki Ford Blue and leave the sides plain ABS black plastic.

You should see some they have for the ZX-10. Ah SH!T, I coulda got one of those and stuck it on my bike with some extra hardware!! DAmn. Too late now. Oh well, this is small enough and it will be a direct bolt on. A couple grams of plastic would prolly be less than what the extra hardware would have weighed.
