Is anyone using one of these? I'm wondering if I have to buy the BackoffXP or the cheaper one since the cheaper one doesn't work well with all LED-based light systems.

I have one from these guys. In fact they used my tail light to R&D one for the ZX14.

Did you install it yourself or have someone do it for you? I bought one and its been sitting on my table now for a couple of weeks. Just don't have the extra money at the moment to have someone install it for me.
