Suspension upgrade
01/08/15 6:27 PM

I have recently firmed up my stock suspension and it feels like it handles better. Not tried to adjust the compression or rebound but set the sag to where I think it's supposed to be to my weight . I weigh about 200 or so

But I was considering upgrade at least my rear shock and possibly the forks too

Excuse my ignorance, but what are the benefits of changing your suspension to like say, Ohlins? And be precise.

I don't track day this bike, nor race it, but would like to get the best handling street riding and comfortable shorter touring rides (with the little woman) out if it

From what I've read it Seems the stock suspension, even if set to your weight by a pro, I'd still very limited and leaves something to be desired

My Ohlins forks have 10mm extra travel with the special parts installed by Ohlins. Other than that, can't tell you much. Haven't ridden on them yet.

For the "average" street rider you won't feel much difference, considering the substantial amount of money you will spend I personally don't think it is worth the expense for the street.

You made a great start by setting your sag first!!! Lay out a route of about 10-15 miles. Get a sheet of paper and write down your compression and rebound setting in 1/4 turns increments and then start experimenting. Always ride the same route so you can compare apples to apples. Try to pick a route the has some slow and fast curves and also a few bumps to get a good all-around feel.

I had Race Tech install their Gold Valves in the forks and shock on my 2000 ZX9R and it was the best money I ever spent. Night and day hands down. On this bike I did Penske internals on the forks and installed a Penske shock and am very, very happy I did it.

Just reread your original post so I added this link which I hope gives you the specifics you are looking for:

I am not trying to say Race Tech is the only game in town.

I have had my suspension internal replaced with Wilbers race components included is larger springs, heavier weight oil, larger internal valves and a full set up professionaly done to suit me with a happy medium between single and two up riding.
The bike is so much better its actually unbeleivable the difference it makes as a whole package. I'm personally so much better as a rider now as it gives the bike so much more feed back over stock, its smoother, greater feedback, more responsive to inputs, safer as you have confidence in knowing how its going to react to bumps, holes and other crap you come across on the roads.
I didnt go for the whole ohlins stuff due to the expense and the guy who did mine who does race bike prep for some of the Australian superbikes championchip riders said its not really worth it for street and doing the internal changes I did will bring it to the same spec just with out the all the gold look (must say it does look good with all that gold Ohlins stuff though)
Mate in all honesty best dollar for dollar I have ever spent on the bike just a better bike all round.

Cheers,

Ben

I've got a similar question, I've had my bike since new and think it probably time for a fluid change (around 15k on the bike). We don't have a ton of places around that I trust to drop it off with, so is just sending the forks and rear shock to race tech a good idea. I weigh about 165 in gear and since lowering the bike I have really fought with getting the suspension set up right. Last year I reduced my sag to 26 mm front and back and that might have been a little to aggressive. It seems right now the bike is to reactive hitting bumps.

When I sent Race Tech my forks & shock for the ZX9 it came back bolt on ready. Sag, rebound & compression was spot on front & rear when I installed it. Took her out for a blast over some bumpy pavement I liked to use for suspension tuning and was giggling in my helmet as to the night and day difference. So smooth yet firm. Perfect & so confidence inspiring. Boy I forgot how much I missed that bike..........
On the ZX14 I went with GMD Computrack Boston and he recommended a Penske set up. I am extremely happy again. Money well spent. Suspension upgrade will be at the top of my to do list on my next bike.
