Steering Damper
09/13/13 3:28 PM

Decided to go with the Hyperpro RSC...simple and hopefully without drama;)My bike has never headshook,or ever approached anything like a tankslapper...but with the power and the way she lofts....thought it was time to get some 'insurance'....Frontend has a tendency to get light;)

This unit looks very well designed and mfg'd.No cutting or drilling.Me likes that.

Under hard acceleration as the wheel rises off the ground I get a shake. Or blister carving.

Last night I hit some roadkill in a curve and got a pretty bad headshake for a second or two. It was bad enough to get me thinking about a damper. I use the steering stem already, so which is the perfered conventional style damper? I'm leaning toward the Hyperpro.

I use the stem for GPS .I Chose hyperpro so I can still use a stem mount, not to forget its one helluva good damper

HyperPro RSC ACTIVE damper.

Yoou'll never know it is there during normal conditions.

Never had a tank slapper yet. IDK how much any damper is needed on the 14 but you know what they say...you never need a damper until the time comes when you NEED it.

The idea of damping according to the conditions seemed right for me...I just hope it looks okay when installed...LOL!!!!I don't want to break my bike this time aroundLOL!!!Besides...it was the Rookster who sold me on it...this brand. He's got one...that was enough for me;)

Should be here late next week or thereabouts. It's time...just like the ABS...it was time.

I still would not go with any other damper. This is one I researched to death and it seemed the clear best for me. A rotary is fine but if you need the steering stem hole for a cam mount, a tube damper is better of course. It seems as though a tube has greater leverage than a rotary as well.

As I mentioned, you cannot tell the HyperPro is at work when installed but if you need a little assurance, try sliding the stem in and out with your hand before installing. Turning the adjustment to min and max, you will feel the difference but never as tight as it will get if the steering ever starts to oscillate.

Seems to me you would need to add a spacer at the point where the damper mounts to the top, front, center screw of the tank cover. Then you would also need to fab up some longer brackets that reach down and screw in to the holes on each side of the steering pivot.

Sure. I like it too. Those were taken a couple years back so The bike looks a little different now.

speaking of which, a steering damper should be sent to the manufacturer to be serviced once/year. I have never sent mine in. I should prolly do that this year. I guess it is not something you should try to DIY.

I noticed in the description on the Moto Mummy website for the HyperPro 06-13 ZX14R RSC Active Damper it says at the end "Does not work on ABS models"
So I sent them an email asking if it will indeed fit my 2013 abs model, they replied saying that
"NO it wont fit, we don't have any for the ABS model. I'm sorry."

Maybe due to the brake lines on the RHS front of the fuel tank??

That must be it. There is no space between the tank and the steering pivot with the HyperPro installed on a Gen1. My brake lines go down the front of the triple tree.

Just an update on the Hyperpro I ordered from EPM...they said nothing about a fitment issue for my 2013ABS...also...they have been waiting on...the mounting hardware to get to them.Perhaps now they have retooled for the ABS models?IDK...we'll see.

And I was looking again at your mounting points Rook...to me...it looks like there IS room for the two lines of the ABS...they cut down to the right side of the steering head...off to the side kinda.I don't see any clearance problem....?????

Looked again...the listing for the mounting kit is for the 2012,2013ZX14R....it does not mention anything about an ABS model 2013....OOOOPS(maybe;) )

I guess I 'may' need to do a tad bit of modding to that mount bracket????IDK...we'll see.I hope not;)Worse come to worse...I suppose the lines COULD be rebent to pass further over the side...wouldn't take much I don't think. They do have a bit of play in there at that point.

I know the 14R really doesn't need a damper...I'm just trying something new....Can't hurt anyway.I slammed the ABS guys before I actually GOT an ABS system....very glad I did it;).Maybe it will help in the corners and such....????

"I wish there was a color option besides gold for the non body parts"...there is...they're making only black mounting kits now;).EPM is where I'm getting mine.

"Under hard acceleration as the wheel rises off the ground I get a shake"...I found by loosening up my arms, and just letting it lift works great for stopping that wiggle effect.Grabbing the tank with my knees...letting the bars be 'looser' with my grip.Works fine...long as I remember to do it;)If I 'try' to help the front lift...it'll fight me in the bars...throttle up...light bar hold.

I can't say about that...BUT...I contacted the guy at EPM...Klaus.He told me that the Hyperpro damper will fit the zx14R ABS models. That the guy at Hyperpro told him that it will...and that disclaimer on the website is an older version webpage.I think they've done the necessary upgrade(s) to the mounting parts to make it fit.I'm still waiting for the mounting kit to arrive at EPM...should be here in a week or two.IF you have a Green zx14R...there IS a custom painted Green damper available...I didn't see that on the EPM website...saw it on another website...sorry...I can't remember where I saw it...but it was for the 2012,2013 zx14R Green.Mine will be black. But that green one looked very cool.
