I'd say do away with tips altogether like they do in Europe. Raise the minimum wage for adults. You can't come close to living by yourself on minimum wage. The company relies on someone else taking care of your financial needs so you can come to work there for 14-15 bucks an hour. LOL I was working at a place for 13 and they offered insurance you had to pay for! You think I took the insurance? Might sound crazy but minimum wage really should be about $20/hour. That's what it takes to live today and it's not any fancy lifestyle. Pay fifteen bucks for a cheeseburger. That's really what it costs. Why are the workers paying for our cheeseburgers for us?

Minimum wage was NEVER meant to be a living wage! It was designed to get you into the work force and learn that hard work and/or a good education was the way that anyone willing to put in the effort could get ahead and thrive under the American dream. I'm just a high school graduate who developed a love of all things gasoline powered. I've worked at only 2 Ford dealerships since 1978 and getting ready to retire in February. I never changed jobs for a .50 cent raise and earned a factory sponsored advanced education while working. I've earned a great living and own a 1.2 million dollar home in Hawaii earning near 100k annually. Not great money but never had a student loan...

Yes, that's the other side of the coin. The problem today is that so much of our workforce is in the service industry and the service industry is still not meant to support a person's financial needs. I'm not aware of the statistics but it looks like a lot more adults are underemployed today than there were when I was a kid. When I was a kid, there were people who were retiring from working in retail and had made a living from that their entire lives. That hasn't been possible for decades. It is possible if you have two people working in retail but that's still a pretty rough life. A former coworker lives in a mobile home at a trailer court but there's no way he'd be doing that if he didn't have a wife who also works in retail...and they're getting to retirement age too so I don't know what they'll do then. Some retail actually does almost pay enough to support a single person now. Kwik Trip is on the right track. On the other hand, if you can't or don't want to pay your employees enough to live on, you deal with high turnover. Sometimes employees run into financial difficulties that prevent them from working. Sometimes they are depending on someone else to fill the financial void their job creates and that other person decides it's not worth the cost. Sometimes they find something a little better paying but it's still not enough to live on. There's a lot to be said for pulling one's self up by the bootstraps but if every underemployed person made a sincere effort to do that, would there be enough jobs that pay a living wage today to employ all those workers fleeing the service industry? Again, I haven't looked at any statistics but I have a feeling the answer to that question is "no." America has changed and the American workforce has also changed, neither for the better.
