Guys Need Help Bad What Do I Do
09/23/13 6:35 PM

So I was at the New York Safety Track a month or so ago and had a blast for sure..... I will say I was one of the fastest in my group and I had already moved up a group. I wound up on one session following an instructor who was riding a CBR 1000r and we had a blast. I was able to stay on him the entire session but I have to say I was working my ass off for sure.. At one point I was so low on the right side of my bike that the faring, pipe and already raised rear set scrapped. Not just a scuff but a real good hit. So much that it actually grabbed my peg and then the rear tire got less weight on it cuz it was pivoting on the peg and slide out about 6 to 10 inches.... Need less to say the pucker factor was there for sure...... But I realized he was not even really riding that hard. It looked effortless.... He was scraping his knee on every turn and was just chilling. So at that point I thought I need a liter bike. 100 lbs less and just fun. That way I take some of the miles off my big baby and have two.... So I've been looking and found a guy selling a ZX10R 2011 with traction control and 3900 miles stock. I can buy it for 7,800.00 that sounds like a great number for sure.. I can find the cash if I have to but should I? I'm not sure. Part of me wants to bad the other sensible part says you have one and just love that one. My wife would pretty much be ok with it. But the cheap part of me says why are you wasting the cash. What do you think? This bike is mint for sure.... But then again I'm gonna add a ton of mods. What should I do man!!!!! Lol

I only had to pick out two key phrases from what you wrote and can see the obvious answer to your question

"I can find the cash if I have to"
and
"My wife would pretty much be ok with it"

This a no brainer for me. My wife is totally okay with me getting a second bike, she is actually encouraging me to, and it will be a liter bike. Cash just is not there right now. I am torn between the ZX10 and the Ninja 1000.

I know man for some reason it's killing me trying to decide if I should do it or not. I absolutely love my 14 but The thought of using a machete for heart surgery when I could use a scalpel has me very enticed. I still have a blast I'm with 14 at track days but I think the 10 would be amazing. However I'm totally in love with my 14. I feel like I'm replacing my wife!!!! Lol

I think you sound like a guy who's going to push yourself or your bike to the limit. So I guess you need to figure out how fast you want to be going when you eventually push a little to far. I sold my liter bike because the cornering speed needed to have fun and push myself was just more than I cared for. You will find yourself in the same situation with the zx10 as you're in with the 14 you'll just be going a lot faster when you get there.
I say run your 14, do what you can to keep up with the liter bikes and beat up on busa's and other 14's when you get a chance.

Buy a track bike.
I used run pre89 postclassics fzr1000exup

Fun and not as expensive unless you want to win.

Never buy a road bike and use it on a track.
Never ride a bike on a track that you cant afford to destroy.

It's the end of the season...troll the WERA boards for a dedicated track bike and get something to learn on, a smaller displacement bike. 600's are a great size for a year of two, parts are cheap and there are many available.
A 750 is also a great size buy will get you in over your head faster than a 600. A 1000 will toss you down the track faster than you can say Holy Shit. Remember how effortless the instructor looked? That's cause he had a lot of experience and was very comfortable at that pace. Work on becoming proficient before working on going fast...your body will thank you....just my 2 cents.

I agree with the last 2 statements. I would definately get a dedicated track bike. That way there is no need to pay for the expensive insurance coverage, and if you get a nice used (older)track bike, you will not feel the loss as bad in the event that you should crash it.
I also agree with the statement about getting a 600cc bike. They will turn in easier, and you should not loose a lot of ground until you hit the long straight ways. Good luck with your decision.

Some, I was having Somefun with you pro/con switch it on him.

Look, when I put myself into action, I am literally undefeated with that 14. It's that powerful, light, torque up the yin-yang. I've mirror darted ducs in the canyons and that is going downhill. I troll the rockstore for suckers. I was not even cooking it, I could suck this car in behind me and he was scraping those bumpers down, we were that tight going downhill again did I dart that guy. I've reeled in 1000cc pipped bikes that were on the pipe... Just for fun.

To me, you are stepping down in power. All these worn out track bikes are just that. Worn out hopped up, needs a rebuild, wera kind of bikes. You'll struggle up to the corner, where the 14, you blip and are on the brakes already.

The 14 is the killer track bike, get off your ass, get a knee down, take the crap off so it's lighter in weight [wink-wink] why do you think the bike looks like it does? So I don't drag parts, I cut close to curbs anshit.

The 14 will make you work. The little bikes will not give you the speed into/out of corners. I'm going to piss away 10 grand to go slower. Thin the hp down is more like it, NOFUN!

I hear you Hib for sure. I blow away most all the liter bikes when I track it. I was just thinking of the 100 lbs lighter the 10R would be. The 10 I found is a new left over with only 3900 miles on it and not deb molested. Lol. She still has huge chicken strips on her. Lol and at 7500 it's a screaming. Deal no???

Some, I don't know how old you are, but I figure someone keeps holding onto the 14 is more a seasoned rider. And if I have it wrong, then this bike will make your skill level a bit more elevated than straining to get to a corner.

When you are low on hp, you are really winding that bike up to catch up. When you have the HP, you can sit up and be just as fast without that extra danger of a bike that does not have the brakes like this guy has.

Once you are used to the bike's speed, then throw a pipe at it, a pig for power. You now bought another bike inside itself and in the cheap seats too. When you have this kind of 'over-powering-the-track,' you then evolve into this Casey Stoner kind of 'give me more hp and no electronics' kind of mentality. Challenge me is the mantra.

So basically, you are balls out, short spurts, manhandling, more demanding, more disciplined, a loft in skillevel. I'm telling you Some, you are going to miss the Fun. Take the old lady on vacation [for her] you need another track bike.

Signed,
NOLTT

I hear you.... I'm 43 (I think) lol and have been riding all my life. I love my 14 SO much but I think I'm going to buy the 10R and have the best of both. This will help me save some of the miles I put on my 14 and the 10R is a great deal whereas even if I buy it and don't like it I could re-sell it and most likely make some cash or at least break even. :) I went to my buddy’s bike shop and he had the 10R and a 2010 14 sitting side by side and that worked out great so I could sit on each a few times to feel the difference. The 10 definitely feels smaller for sure and I think it will be a blast to flick around. I'm going to track it also so but it will be doing double duty.

$7800 bike
$2200 suspension and damper rebuild
$600 slip-on
$400 ecu flash
$600 track skins
$1000 spare wheels & rotors
$500 tire warmers
$1500 trailer

That's just a rough breakdown of the basics.
Do you already have an R.V.? lol

The new 10r is a bad mother fucker... Check out what Jeremy Toye and Lees Cycle are doing with them.

Remember how effortless the instructor looked? That's cause he had a lot of experience and was very comfortable at that pace.

Nope... if he was on a CBR, it's all bike... just ask my competitors.

Track bike for scratching that itch. I will WOT sweepers with the 14 where it is happy, but for tight, technical back roads I never push the speed high enough to worry about clearance because there is too much risk, not enough sight distance to see surface hazards, moose, what have you. Want to keep up with the liter bikes on the track, then get a liter bike for the track.

If I had that cash sitting around, I'd wait for the october correction, sit out the two dead cat bounces and pile it on into an index.

Two words come to mind that deter me from buying a zx 10r a KTM exec 500 and a Ducati Divael! Those two words are, DIVORCE LAWYER, STRIPPER GIRLFRIEND, KIDS GONE, WAGES GARNISHED, ALAMONY CHEQUE, CHILD SUPPORT, MURDER RAP(no one else raises my kids and I would kill any man trying). I could come up with many more two word situation words, but you all get the gist! I would beg, borrow and steal to populate my stable! Are YOU KIDDING DUDE!!!!!

BUY THE 10r don't even consider passing up on this opportunity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love a zx-10, but i have ridden a 2013 twice now and just for my personal taste, I need that big bike power. I don't mind workin it a little harder. She like more of a firm caress than a big shove in the twisties. Now that Priscilla and I sing the same song we dance pretty fair in the twisties, but absolutely nothing pays the adrenaline bills like grabbing WOT thoroughly through 6th, after a nice set of corners of course. After smashing Priscilla up through the gears everything else just feels small. I gave up my duc obsession. It's like that. We are talkin, I was neck deep in that 'ducatisti' world. And after the last 9000 miles on Priscilla, I am done with little cranky bitches. ;) just my 2c!

I wasn't trying to sway your decision Some....you want the literbike...I can see why.You should then...have a blast and rail with finesse! The 14 will only do so much...a literbike it is not.
