Here's the deal, I wiped out my '08 ZX10R last May and sold it to 1Bad. He paid me cash and I signed over the title and he took the bike. No bill of sale and I forgot to take the stinkin license plate off.

Forgot all about it until Saturday, I'm checking the mail and there is a letter from Harris County TollWay Authority saying I have numerous Toll Violations in Houston, Texas and have ten days to pay the fines or expect more fees tacked on for failure to pay. There's a picture of my old bike with some big dude on it, license plate plainly visible. Must be a mistake, that bike was sold seven months ago.

I call the Toll Authority and try to explain. Without a bill of sale I'm liable, bottom line!

I start making phone calls. 1Bad never titled the bike and left the plate on there. He gives me the name of a guy in San Antonio he sold the bike too, again no bill of sale.

I track this guy down, he resold to a guy I'n Houston, never retitled, no bill of sale. This guy doesn't remember who he sold it to, six months ago. He left the plates on as well.

I call Texas DMV, the bike was retitled yesterday, fifteen days after the last toll violation, new license plate issued. This guy has been riding the bike for six months and I'm being held liable for everything he's done!

What do I do, my plate is still out there somewhere, how many other violations I don't know about?

This is a nightmare, what can I do?

Lesson Learned and pay the tickets before they start to double and triple on you in late fee's, shit here in NY if you decide not to pay they will track you down and confiscate what ever vehicle they find registered to you...Then U gotta pay the original tickets plus the towing fee on the vehicle they took.

What a mess! I lived down in the Houston area for 10yrs. in the 80's and it seemed traffic laws were alot more lax than here in IN ....that being said though the lack of a bill of sale is the main issue n I'm not sure you have any recourse Kruz. Can you maybe get some 'free' advice from an attorney? I would at least try that first....good luck!

NO ! Kruz mate just go back to the post that you did about when you sold it! Print it out take it in to the DMV that will prove that you talked to us all here about selling it so cheaply to Bad1 & the date it was mate so just do a search on this forum for the true facts !

Bean's got a great idea there Kruz. that should at least help. It is at least some evidence to support your story. I think you would be best to talk to a traffic atty on this, though. The bureauocrats might not care much if your innocent or guilty. All they care about is if the system runs unobstructed surprises. Violations flow out and fine money flows in and that they can go home at 5.

I just checked with DMV online, there is a vehicle transfer form to protect against this sort of thing but you only have 30 days or it becomes invalid. I'm so thoroughly screwed! The plates are still out there snd God only knows where, they could be used again and I have no recourse. Am I forever liable for what some Ahole does now with my plate?

My only recourse is to send them a copy of a bill of sale to 1Bad, it then becomes his problem and he has to donthe same to the guy who he sold it to and so on. Only way out that I see.

Can you create a bill of sale after the fact, I don't see why not?

See if 1Bad will sign the bill of sale. Start the paperwork. Pay the fines, and figure out who earned the fines by the title timeline, and start taking people to court. Maybe find out the address of the last guy to title it, and have the cops get your plate back. You could report the plate stolen.

IDK the details to your deal with 1Bad but it seems foul to run up violations on ur plates. Hopefully 1Bad will help with ur situation.......

1Bad sold it a long time ago Shogun, someone else did this to me and no one knows who now has the bike. I called the HCTRA this morning and paid the violations off with a credit card. Hopefully it's over, expensive lesson learned.

I mean, whom of all of us would not know using a plate registered to someone else on a bike we purchased is a) illegal, and b) not too bright, and c) obviously not caring if the seller gets in trouble over it?

Shitty situation... Had a similar one... Paid the fines, then my "buddy" reimbured me for half. Neither of us 100% satisfied, but that's compromise, right? Lesson learned.

Not sure what the motor vehicle code is where Kruz lives, which is DMV's rulebook. But I'm certain printouts from a onine forum aren't considered evidence. LOL.

In Maryland, if you have outstanding fees/fines, you don't get your license renewed, nor can you register a new vehicle. I'd be willing to bet thats pretty much standard.

Correct, the only one accountable is the end purchaser that actually collected the fines. He is most likely not even aware that the fines exist as the only notice went to me as owner of record.

No hard feelings, forgive and forget, lesson learned.

Should have kept that bike and repaired it but I did get a new ZX10r out of the deal so alls good.

This is stupid tax Kruz. How could you forget the plate! When I knew the wrecker from the insurance company was coming and it'd be the last time I saw my bike I scoured that bike and stayed up at night worrying about forgetting about something I wanted off that bike. I just don't understand how you could go for so long and not think of it. No offense to you personally, this is just my asshole opinion, but you better just pay up for your mistake, and then go over to 1bad and hold a gun to his head till he tells you who he sold it to and then on down the line until you get done right. It takes one big son of a bitch to sell a bike with someone else's plate on it and a whole 'nother type of bitch to buy it and rack up the tickets with it. Everyone involved with this new what was happening and they just let it go. I can't remember once ever in my life of buying and selling all kinds of vehicles where the plate didn't come up in conversation about the deal. I'm being harsh here but this is some serious bad shit. What if he had committed some felony on that bike and a camera caught it. I'd sure as hell be mad at myself but I'd also be looking for a pound of flesh from the last person I can find who had the bike! No one was exempt from blame, IMO!
