Helmet Decisions...
07/26/13 1:54 PM

We are in the process of moving from one house to another, but only about two miles away. I'll pick up my new 14 soon after the move once everything settles down. The last time I had a bike, you did not need a seperate motorcycle license in my state, but now you do, so I have been brushing up and will take the wrtten test next week.

That being said, I have been looking at helmets, just to familiarize myself with whats out there and whats changed since I bought my Shoei X9 that I used with my ZX11 way back in 93'.

I think my head, besides being full of stick men, is more long and oval than it is round. I come up as a large on the Shoei and Arai sizing charts.

I think I like the Shoei GT Air, and the Arai Signet.... like the concept of the Neotec modular, but I dont know if its something I would really utilize that much. I was unaware of Schuberth helmets until recently, but the modular they make looks nice as well, and gets great reviews. They are steep, but not out of the question if they really are that good. My old X9 that I had fit me pretty good. I gave it to a friend after I sold my 11.

I am open to suggestions. I will probably go with Revzilla so I can send one back without a hassle if it just does not fit me for some reason. I am pretty much a solid color type guy, graphics are cool, but Im fine with just white or gray etc..

Anyway, feel free to comment on your lid, or what you found if you have been looking recently. There may be some things out there I have missed that are worthy of consideration.

Cant wait to get my bike...it'll either be a blue 2012, or a white 2013. Love the site, cruise it at least once per day. Take care and be safe.

Hey! Welcome! I just bought a Shoei RF-1100. I believe they bill it as a sport touring lid. But it had all the features I like and was lightweight and had a wicked paint job! I have been wearing it a lot and it flows great, is fairly quiet and the chrome shield is not too dark at night. Overall, I freakin love it.

It's called the Diabolic Fued. Has naked bitches ghosted in and shit.

Not sure about modular helmets, but I wear a Bell RS-1. It is the most comfortable helmet I've worn, it never fogs and they are priced at about half of a shoei or arai. I replaced a shoei with the bell and the sizing between the two is the same. Good luck with helmet shopping...way to many choices.

Long oval is definitely arai signet q. That's what I have. You definitely need to try them on. If you are truly a long oval, forget about bell and shark. Even the corsair won't fit. I blame you mom, for this head.... I would like to try schuberth. Euro vs. Us.

Thanks for the replies so far. That Shoei RF1100 with the graphics is swesome. i had not seen those. Some of the others that Shoei and Arai have with black or white graphics are cool too. CBlast is right that would look good with a white ZX. As far as looks its a no brainer...I know I said I'm fine with a solid color, but dang those are sharp.

I looked at the Bell RS series....lots of great choices. I had not considered Bell either. I guess it comes down to what fits my head, so as someone said, I may need to try the Signet Q thanks to momma...

i may call Revzilla Monday...I am wondeing if an email pic of my noggin would help a sales rep help me make a decision. I'm a large according to Shoei and Arai, but I think my head is definitely not round, longer forehead, a bit longer front to back...Im at least an intermediate plus oval...I think....

thx for the replies...I am considering all options...

Bought 2 discontinued AFX FX-100's. Euro/US DOT rated. Comes in at 59.55 to Rome's 56.25 Shoei. So pad wise I'm there? Here is where the other ounces come into play.
1. Lots of tiny spring loaded air doors that open or close. 1 chin, 2 foreheads, 1 head top door and I may be missing more. Pretty trick idea.

2. A one time strap adjust or not? In other words, it has a ratchet type closing buckle. No tug anymore on the one strap thru the 2 D loops. It's push the ratchet into itself and the strap gets tighter. Both receiver and tongue are attached to either side of the helmet. The ratchet sits under your chin. Looks like a lot of engineering going on with that quick release idea no doubt.

3. The clear shield sits outside and flips up by hand with a bend at the plastic. However, on the left side and at the bottom of the shield's flip up mechanism, there are 2 finger indents that slide this plastic piece. The sliding moves in a horizontal position. This is for you to flip forward or back an internal shield. This brings down this fighter pilot type of dark shield hidden above the skull area.

4. Speaking about skulls, this thing is peppered with them. I'm going to nail polish a 14 in one of the eyes and Nation it up! It also has a little peppering in the aerodynamics dept at back of the head.

This link will give you an idea of what to look at based on your head size.

It's all your moms' fault

You can also read the reviews on each helmet.

Can't say enough good things about my Arai Corsa V. No buffeting or movement at high speeds and I got in 2010 and it still looks new. I replaced the padding so now she fits snug again. I have had a few helmets. I Think Romes Shoei is just as good!

I sent some pictures of my head to the folks at Revzilla....other than making them throw up in their mouth a little, I was advised that my head is not really long and oval enough to need an Arai Signet Q. I have a Shoei head, so I' m gonna Try the GT Air to start with in a Large. Thanks for the comments....I'll update when it gets in and give a report if anyone is interested.

I think the round head (aria) and long head (shoe) is a myth. I have had both helmets and they both fit a medium and both fit well. However, this is just my opinion and I could be deadly wrong, my head is like Captain picards, almost exactly but with lots of hair on it!
Good luck broth!
