Popping your bike's cherry.
08/01/13 12:51 AM

Well my bike is no longer a virgin, now I've started screwing with it.
Isn't it funny the first time you start undoing and changing things on a brand new bike. It almost feels like you're spoiling it at first. But you're actually taking the first steps toward making it even better than it was and putting your own personality into it.
Well I got that last night. I replaced the stock levers with a set of Pazzo's and replaced the bar end weights with a set of polished Throttlemeisters. I'll shortly get the radiator guard into position and fit the Ventura luggage rack (to be taken off when I just want the sexy look). Last weekend I pulled the rear wheel off to scrub all that greasy factory crap off the chain and wheel and put on a nice clean coat of chain wax. Now I have a nice shiny chain and wheel.
And so the journey begins. You gotta love that feeling.

I remember that day clear, I PMED someone here about 4-5 times before I changed out the windscreen, and I have adjusted and synchronized the valve train of a duc. Like I was all worried about windscreen wellnuts, and got wrapped around the axle over them before I loosened the first one! :))) okay, so I am slightly OCD about bikes. Once I swapped her out, I think it was less than a week before I tackled a total disassembly just for cleaning and maintenance. Did it again two days ago. Just for the general cleaning and torque check stuff. Now I have the total bodywork process down, never once broke a tab. It is not that bad. I love this machine. Every stage of her development is wicked. Cool thread Sweet!

so I am slightly OCD about bikes.

Aren't we all....but what fun!

I replaced the stock levers with a set of Pazzo's

Very nice. I like mine. I will say that the clutch lever started sticking at on point. The lever would pop forward as I was releasing it and it got to be dangerous. I put a drop of silicone spray lube where the piston pin seats into the lever. That cured it immediately. Never came back but I still dab a bit of silicone on that area once in a great while.

Didn't even think twice about it. CT duals went on two weeks after I got her. Hardest part was painting a brand new CT muffler black. The other one had a touch of rash, so it was a lot easier.

Cracking the oil pan sucked. 10 miles from work, 60 miles from home. Oh well, she loves the new OSR pan. I reward her well. Only the finest baby, only the finest for the blue meanie.

"I put a drop of silicone spray lube where the piston pin seats into the lever."

Rook, I always like cross-referencing my manual with your "How To's". That way I always get shit right. Mostly from your how to's. Thanks for all your hard work. I referred to your lever "how to" and applied white lithium to all the relevant points. They operate smooth as. I have a set of Titax levers too but the Pazzos seem to be marginally better made.

Cool pictures Cblast. Doesn't it make you shake your head when you see your pride and joy in its undies.
I think it's great on this site that when you ask a seemingly simple question to some, you don't get slammed for it. Instead someone always jumps right in and walks you through it. That's how we all learn. Keep it up guys.

The radiator guard I'm fitting tonight (with a few scotches) is one of my custom hand made black stainless guards. I like the all black up-front rather than the silver radiator. I think it just gives the black bike the uninterrupted, black imposing look that only the black bikes have. To do that without any potential clearance issues requires trimming 5 mm off one of the little black plastic panels in front of the top of the radiator. I was hacking that panel last night, thinking "what the hell am I doing"?

Wrench on!!!

My only alterations (Mods, as its called) are fender eliminator, full exahust, PCV, and tank pads.

Other than that, I want it stock.

Some say * give it time and you'll do more*, but I've had it this way for some time and have no desire to add anything else..........at least not just yet.

That is a sexy looking bike though ZX14man. I can understand getting a bike to a point you don't want any more. My 07 was almost at that point when I traded it. I guess some people too have absolutely no desire to modify, change or improve their bikes at all. Just enjoy them as is. Got to respect that too. For some though, it's a very individual thing, an expression of themselves. Constantly evolving. I'm probably in the latter category.

I know where you're coming from, it'd be cool to see it rock-up like that. I still prefer to pop the cherry then service it myself rather than someone else doing it (sexual innuendo included). Then when my bike gets that sexy/slutty look, I know where it came from.

If you could have cut at the midpipe/muffler weld...(Up past the muffler cat in there)...you could have gotten that cat outta there...and still had your stock rear part intact...just a reweld from the cut end onto the midpipe...Then maybe just 'fit' the heat shield back on there with some tack welds or possibly it would still be fittable with the tabs?Kinda too late now though....but...good job anyway;)

All the packing shit is in that lower part and I didn't want to be fucking around with that. All I did was cut off one whole section of baffling. I've got a few ideas to clean it up. First I need to play around and figure out which of those three holes I want to plug up. I'm thinking the big one cause right now I think it's by passing the remaining baffle section.

Remove the cap at the tip that you discarded. Band saw the tip so you can weld the beauty bracket 'hanger' back on. Then install the beauty bracket back onto the hanger you welded back on. The single hole [out of the beauty bracket] will quit it back down some.

I more gutted the one pipe. Installed the tip back on. Then, buddaboom buddabing, a sleeper 4-in-1. And to quiet it even more, I safety wired a smaller diameter hole over the tail piece. I used an old bearing that was around. Do you know how 'muffler bearing' came about? Beats me? I just use the shit around the gearage to meguybeer it back on... give or take a 24oz'er.

You tell me, nasty. After you get it back to the suggestion, watch how the bottom end just drops off. And I'm surprised at the sub-mid pipes or tubes? Look down at the tips. See if they are tapered at the ends? The '08 pipes or where they '06's I tore up? Either way, they sported some v-stack tapers at the ends. That says 'engineering.' So they may be downstream are those 2 exposed clean [not hacked off] like the main pipe that has been cut.
