You've gotta be kidding me. It was about that time he came to mind seems? I just caught this thread. Who did what to whom here, Kruz? Everyone talking sprocketone wheel intervening, it got me thinking about Steve. What set yours off?

Pinion/Primary Gear whine on my ZX-6R seems like it's been getting louder, he's got the same bike so was going to ask him about it.

Hub, I may be done with Kawasaki, the 10R may be the last one I ever buy. I have a 14 burning oil with only 18,000 miles on the clock, pinion whine on my 6R with 8000 miles and crap clutch on my 10R with only 4,000 miles. I've had to fix a lot of build problems on these machines. My two Hondas just seem to motor along by comparison without drama, sad to say but my experience with KHI has not been all that good. Just my .02

I think the outsourcing is damaging the QC. It sure is not the parts made. It sure is not the design.

1. '06 - Only a few grand on that till its demise. Not a flaw that I saw?
2. '08 - Found the black dust cap plastic cover cracked upon the 7,500 front steering stem inspect and lube.
3. '08 - Found the front rim's wheel seal torn upon the first tire change. That's an assembly problem as far.
4. '13 - Found nothing so far.

Q and C.
1. Honda.
2. Neck and neck Kawi/Yam.
3. Suzuki is at the bottom of the barrel.

Honda - GL was my favorite bike to watch to uncrate each year. I saw it evolve into what it is today from day one.
Yam - Had SRX single. The parts that put that all together is what can I say? Yamaha. Study it closely.
Kaw - I can't decide which is 2nd in quality of execution. If I look at how the engineering is placed next to the other part, Yam. Why? More engineering thought goes into it is just my observation/opinion.
Suz - I'm going to make a wire harness and cause it to fail in a consistent sort of way. I'm going to make so many parts to put a fairing on, we over engineered it to the hilt, here's your puzzle of pieces of dependability.

Honda is in your face here is our dual clutch in our transmission you 3mm gap chaser!

Hey kruz what about the cbr 1000. I have heard from people that own them and my mechanic that they are famous for burning oil. I thought it was the 08 and up model. But yeah Hondas are the best built bikes. Back as a kid riding in the dirt if you had a cr 125 or 250 that was the shit. And forget about the cr500!! Always liked Hondas but for race bikes and all out power they have always lagged. My last honda was my cbr600 f2, god I thought that bike was amazing when I was younger. And one of my first crush bikes was the original cbr900rr and the zx7r. But yeah from riding over the years with cbr1000rr they always had oil burning issue's I've heard.

Wow kruz that's a beautiful bike there. But see I know my honda bike knowledge! !!!! But yeah when I heard that years ago I was shocked. But I heard they still run just fine. And hell if you change your oil enough I wouldn't worry at all. I have to admit I never check my oil, as long as its in there when I change it I'm happy. Then again I never have a bike to long. Usually get something new every 2 years.

And then on the other side of the coin is an oil thread, where no one uses said OEM oil, nor follows book. So if your mechanic can prove what he has seen is every model has to lose oil, squids like myself overfilling and purging oil this way, I don't know if that is enough to call the fleet all oiling away is that particular engine family.

So is it engine family or one over exuberant break in?

When I stated famous for leaking oil, I was referring to the 08 1000s and up. That's it. No other Hondas. And the mechanic told me after I asked him about always hearing that from some cbr owners. And he just confirmed it. And for a side note this guy just opened his own shop 2 years ago, so we all use him so we don't have to go to the dealers. And he was one of the head mechanics at the local yamaha and honda dealer........so he was a good one to ask!!

Was there ever a bulletin out on the bike ask him? If not addressed and it was some not a batch of rings all tempered wrong or whatever is the run of those engines with the rings in it, and how close are the frame/engine numbers? Because batch I would think plays a game.

They use rotating jobbers? I don't know the greasing of the cult and how their economy plays out with each other, but say they used nippon rings and the next year uses TDK, or I forget the name of the other ring jobbers honda uses, but say it's rings not cylinder wall finish.

We still have that coin between numbers and how far apart are the oil changes and break ins all beat to death someone mentions break in and there goes the book. Sounds like no one listens to the owner's man you will pay later it says.

Can't be just a batch because it was happening to different year bikes from 08 and up. I won't see him for awhile but when I do to get some tires if I remember I'll ask. Its not the break in because from what I heard and learned to many of them are doing this. And im sure they had many different break ins. And not to label riders but from my experience with cbr riders they are mostly a non squid group unlike the gixxer crowd. Some of the guys I rode with were very easy rider's to say the least.

Understood. I was just shooting out that variable. I'll say wall finish to ring seal. Some sort of process thru the years has to be something going on? And fluff out of the tip is just that. The deal is to leakdown the cylinder, read the inner ring of the spark plug and look at the overall tip. That's where the burn center is speaking from. Rich/lean/det/oil leak/etc.

http://www.1000rr.net/forums/1000rr-general-discussion/67473-your-08-09-burning-lot-oil.html

That's the primary reason I picked up a left over '07 model , it's a crapshoot, about 40% of the '08-'09s burn oil. It's a shame too cause otherwise it's a stellar machine. Honda has never come clean on why they burn oil and why not all of them.

Kruz, I am still around. I remember from your last post couple moths ago asking about the excessive whine from your ZX-6R. Mine also has close to 8K on the clock and I can not hear any whine. It used to have one when new but it diminished overtime as it broke in. There are many 2009 to 2012 ZX-6R riders in our sportbike riders San Diego club and I have not heard anyone complaining about it. Now, I have not been frequenting ZX-6R forums and do not know if this is a more common occurrence, or it just may be isolated case with your bike. I would suspect that wrong oil could cause excessive gear wear. I do know which oil you use, and trust me, I do not want to start another oil thread. Then perhaps I may be wrong. For your info the following is oil change history on my 6R
0 - 150 miles: Factory Stock Oil
150 - 750 miles: Valvoline 10W40 Automotive Oil
750 - 1500 miles: Valvoline 10W40 Automotive Oil
1500 - 3000 Miles: Mobil 1 4T 10W40 Motorcycle Synthetic
3000 - 6000 Miles: Mobil 1 4T 10W40 Motorcycle Synthetic
6000 - current: Mobil 1 4T 10W40 Motorcycle Synthetic

OK, thanks Steven, I thought I remember you saying a buddy of yours had one also and it had the whine. Mine sounded at first a bit like a teakettle but now a bit more like a supercharger whine. Sounds like the crankshaft pinion gear but who knows.

@Grn...thanks, I really think Honda did a nice job styling the '06/'07.

Kruz, have you played around with oil brands and viscosities? I've found that straight-cut transmissions exhibit a distinctive audible note based on the pressure face loading of the engaged gears. Being constant-mesh there are a numerous teeth engaged at any given time.

Give Kawasakis house brand a try or choose a higher viscosity grade such as 10W-50 or 20W-50. If you want to just play then fill the sump with a mono-grade SAE 40 for a brief period. Let us know if you hit on any good combinations.

Kruz, do you know how to record and post a sound clip?

Yes, I can easily do that with my iPhone but it it has to be in gear, under hard acceleration to hear the whine. Not sure if an iPhone would even pick up that high a frequency with all of the background wind and mechanical noise.

These are straight cut primary gears, they are going to make more noise than helicals. I'm thinking maybe my backlash between pinion and the primary gear is on the far side of the tolerance range. I've heard some race engines that had much louder primary gear whine than what I have so I'm not all that concerned really. Just checking on other ZX-6R owners to see what they've experienced.

Nope, I quit worrying about it and ride. Everyone of my bikes makes strange engine noises, they're all different but all create their own unique symphony. I've always heard you need to own just one Italian bike and you'll appreciate how mechanically quiet our Jap bikes are. First time I heard a Ducati with a dry clutch I thought it was going to blow up. Just a thought.
